Imagine a black choir in church. That's what this performance needs and is missing. Technically perfect is one thing, soul is another.

yea idk just with a piece like this there has to be some soul and roughness around the edges

I have total respect for the awesome musicianship of the Marine Band. Having said that, I also must add that it is VERY DIFFICULT to sit perfectly still with no emotion and play a piece of this nature. They succeeded very well at that. Tight, precise and masterful? -Incredible! Authentic, inspiring and soul-moving? - Not so much. Not often, but in this case, I’ll take the university ensembles, hands down!

Yeah, I have to say, in reality they played it perfectly and im sure there wasn't a note out of place here, but when you compare it to other performances where the players are feeling the music and the crowd just goes nuts after a solo it just kinda feels weird. But I must say it was a wonderful performance it it definitely takes a lot of skill to perform this with this level of seriousness.

This is most certainly one of those pieces where seeing it live makes it a million times better. You can not even come near capturing the energy in the last movement on video.

Last night we just got to witness this piece performed live in a high school gym. The music was moving. The band is fantastic. All members seemed to project the emotions of the music through the room. I highly recommend going to see The President's Own live when they travel to your neck of the woods. There is so much more to experience when one hears them live. I'll be living with them off of youtube for a while. It beats zero. Semper fi.

Oh yeah and those trombones holding up the bottom end. Every chair is held by a wonderful musician and they all come together under Colonel Fettig. And they can swing it!

@@brucekuehn4031 Truly. The Baylor University concert band has a version of this on KZbin. Their shout segment is incredible with the energy and fun they bring to it. Can’t recommend it enough.

@@bassbone52 Thanks! Found it - sky high energy! Was looking around and also saw this in the Program Notes of composer Omar Thomas - “I played trombone in wind ensembles from the 4th grade through college. This experience has contributed significantly to the life I lead now.”

We're playing this at my high school band, and I love this piece so much. I will say the first movement is very boring to play on trombone. The second movement "Shout" is very fun to play, but also difficult to learn.

@@bobmatt5175the first movement was good but the second movement in this one just doesn’t have the same energy of many college bands, they played it very accurately and with the best sound and intonation but it’s just not as entertaining.

So, which of the premier DCI competitors will be the FIRST to build a show around this extraordinary piece? Seems like a no-brainer to me. Imagine the possibilities!

Great tenor sax, watch out Navy Band maybe the Marines can play ,modern licks, too. This is a mammoth improvement over the Rehearsal addition. OH! the flutes are so much better. The Piccolo is nicely balanced, too. Just Perfection. That second movement really cooks. The Marienes definitely have the best Clarinets. Listen to those tubas push that beat as it should be. Wow!!!!!!!!

@MrBochawa Their performance doesnt have the "vibe" of some others. However, this is the cleanest , most precise, best tone quality and intonation rendition I have ever heard of this piece
@MrBochawa

@@turnne Precision, tone quality, and intonation are still subjective elements of music making, as much as academic training would like for it not to be. Nonetheless, even if I conceded that the tone quality and precision were nailed to the wall, this would still be massively dull. So to what purpose does the technical aspect of this performance serve?
@turnne
@turnne Жыл бұрын
@@MrBochawa Precision and intonation are two aspects that can have numeric values related to them..ie within a range of a standard. That is not subjective. What I am going to suggest is that a performance could be very " exciting" to you....but I doubt that you( or anyone else) would want to listen if the precision and intonation was far from the the standard metric. Let me take this one step further. In an adjudicated event, you will receive a higher rating with a very clean, precise and intune performance than one where the playing is imprecise and fails on the intonation standards...Even though the former performance is very " machine like"( not very musical) in its execution than the latter.
@MrBochawa
@MrBochawa Жыл бұрын
@@turnne yes, I also did and still do competitive band. But recognize that those numerical choices are socially deterministic. True harmonic intonation sounds very different than our modern "just" band standard. Judging is dependent upon an agreed upon standard, not an objective one. Besides, judges perspectives on intonation are NOT numerical, they are not measuring the intonation of a band with anything but the history of their aural experience. This performance and future performances are, thankfully, NOT competitively adjudicated ones. I'm sure we can agree that we should compartmentalize the "objective standard" to competitive music lest we destroy the VAST majority of the history of music making.
