The build-up to the climax was overwhelming -- I felt like my heart was going to burst out of my body, and tears ran down when the explosion occurred. The emotions of the doomed lovers directly communicated through the performance. Remarkable, even among Furtwängler's many performances.

This is my favorite Tristan and Isolde. I like Toscanini, but Furtwangler brings out so much color and texture. He’s like a fine wine. It takes time to appreciate him and his interpretations.

Stravolgente...ti sopraffà di bellezza ... è struggente.... tocca il divino ....never heard something like this with anybody else..... Il tire de cette partition tout ce qu'elle pouvait contenir ....les notes sont les mêmes pour tout le monde..mais quelqu'un sait leur tirer tout ce qu'elles peuvent dire et d'autres pas ou moins.... En naissant quatre ans après la mort de Richard Wagner, Fürtwangler dirige donc la musique de son époque. Il n'y a donc pas de questions superficielles à se poser sur la manière de diriger cette musique, il n'y a qu'à écouter...Et copier inlassablement. Aucune place pour des interprétations farfelues ou divergentes!
