It was a BLACK DAY in the history of Hindustani culture and literature, when the name of Urdu Bazar, Gorakhpur was changed to Hindi Bazar. Needless to say, Munshi Premchand commenced his writing in Urdu and later on translated in Hindi. Similarly, Raghupati Sahai 'Firaq Gorakhpuri' who was a professor of English in Allahabad University- both the greats commenced their writings from Gorakhhpur.

Just watched this episode. Kudos to Jashne Rekhta for such a great program. Very much impressed by all participants. A word about Urdu . . . it is a wonderful language which can say a lot in few words. It does not belong to a particular religion. My father knew only English and Urdu. I wish I could study Urdu in my school days. Like any other language of India, Urdu has a unique place.

I should've phrased it dirrerently - reflecting "with names with multiple religious associations speaking about Urdu". For example several in Punjab / Haryana that I knew in early 80s wrote in Urdu didn't feel it has anything to do with religion.

Shabana Aazmi is right. Urdu started in Deccan. Wether you like it or not, wether you had learnt it from Sufees or Kings ,Whether you learnt forcibly or happily, Whether, were bestowed by God or man ( By chance or by planning), You had gained, a heart rendering delicate literature, that is yours to be proud of! to be treasured as a, link, bridge, and a relationship, with different countries, cultures and other great languages, which may sometimes be of great benefit to you.

What should also have been said Lata/Asha and all Indian filmi ganas were sung in Urdu and Urdu pronunciation till recently. Majrooh, Shakeel, Sahir etc etc were Urdu poets. Even Alka followed in the Asha/Lata tradition of singing and pronouncing her songs in the Urdu diction. Of course there were a few GREAT Hindi poets/lyricists like Pradeep/ Bharat Vyas but very few. What was called Hindustani was good old Urdu!
