Order of the Arrow opening ceremony and ordeal tapout by Wahissa Lodge #118 at Raven Knob Scout Reservation near Mount Airy, NC on July 20, 2011 (5th week). This preceded the Vigil tapout ceremony that was conducted later that evening. Pay close attention to the young scout getting tapped out who was confused about what he was supposed to do!

God, my lodge needs to step up its ceremony game. I'm a brother of tschtani lodge #10 in connecticut, and our ceremonies are nothing compared to this. I mean really. Our regalia is nothing compared to this awesome stuff.

Face paint, body pain, and wigs are prohibited at conclaves, NOAC, and other events conducted beyond the individual lodge. As I understand it, Wahissa Lodge is on good terms with the local American Indians in their area, so it is permitted. From the Guide to Officers and Advisors about Face Paint: "Appropriate local use is to be interpreted by each lodge based on their relationship with American Indian tribes in the council area."

I wish people would read the Guide to Inductions and the Guide to Officers and Advisors before telling people the rules and regulations of the Order the Arrow. I have actually rewritten this post multiple times, to make sure that I was clear, concise, and not rude or abrupt. I am also going to break it up into multiple parts.

Really cool and very different from my Lodge, Mikanakawa 101. What makes this video even more special for me is that my troop’s mentor(rest in peace) was originally a member of Wahissa Lodge.

Wahissa Lodge #118 has conducted their tapouts in this same manner since the 1960s, and I'm certain that many attorneys have viewed this ceremony or even participated. I'm sure if there were any legal issues with touching or face paint, someone would have addressed it by now.

However, over the years the Guide to Inductions has changed a lot, especially concerning Call-Outs. (Which the title change has been specifically changed to avoid tapping.) The OA used to conduct Tap Outs. The touching of candidates in 2002 had to be symbolic, and had to be done only by a hand in the shape of the Scout Sign. According to the newest Guide to Inductions, you may touching the candidates is strictly forbidden.

Your use of lines from the Ordeal Ceremony in a Tap Out is in violation of symbolic progression. As someone else mentioned, so is the use of arrows; flaming arrows are particularly discouraged. The ceremony you use may date from around the 60's but OA policy has changed considerably since then. There should only be ONE individual wearing a chief's bonnet. Whether you are on good terms with local tribes/nations, face paint is generally forbidden.
@robbiedzierzanowski1118
@robbiedzierzanowski1118 6 жыл бұрын
The only problem here is if National catches this Lodge using face paint and spears and multiple bonnets in the next year, the Lodge will no longer be chartered by National. In other words, they won't exist any more. They are very strict with the Call Out, Cross Over, Brotherhood and Vigil ceremony policies. So in other words again, yes, he does care more about policy more than theatrics. This ceremony can lose the pain and multiple chief bonnets and still look and sound amazing. Just don't get caught is all I have to say about this.

All depends on the local tribe, as it is a lodge event and it seems they are on good terms with their lodge, it does not matter. This was also like 10 years ago where national was not as harsh on rules and regulations

I saw the Raven Knob Week 3 ceremony this year. While it was more impressive than any ceremony from Croatan 117, I had some issues with it. One of the dancers had American Flags as drapery on his arms, not cool, and I'm not sure about the whole facepaint aspect (not sure that OA has the right).

ok first thing that's wrong with the ceremony is the face paint you have to earn the right to wear it only war veterans can wear it not just any scout and the flaming arrows are in violation to bsa safety polices and I don't care how long you've been doing this ceremony it needs to be changed and I got this information from my chapter advisor who studies native American culture for a living

There's nothing wrong with the ceremony. I watched them do it this way since I was a little kid and it brings back many fond memories. This was by far, my favorite summer camp to visit when I was a kid. I think you're confusing this 'tap out' ceremony with the ordeal, brotherhood and vigil ceremonies. Good day.

This is not how OA ceremonies usually go. First of all, music that is not from a drum is not allowed. Along with face paint. This lodge seriously broke the rules of ceremonies, there are other ceremonies that are approved by an organization of people of Native American background. You just need to see a actually approved ceremony.

Correction: Misappropriation. It shouldn’t matter if you’re wanting to practice another culture’s traditions. It should, however, matter that you understand it’s a very personal aspect of someone’s identity, and to represent it as close to the source as possible.
