Loonatics Unleashed is a very interesting case of a show that has very split opinions on if it was a cool spin-off for the Looney Tunes brand or if it was a mistake in the first place to try it. Or was is based on bad marketing leading to confused fans on what Loonatics Unleashed even was? Today, let's take a look at Loonatics Unleashed and see what it was all about.

Idk bro, looney tunes were still on tv when we were kids (im 28), so this forgotten show wasnt really anywhere ahead of anything lmao.. no one cares about looney tunes now lmao, anime is poppin and does it all better anyway, american action cartoons are all but dead save for like the dc feature films which are sub-par at best (that batman hush adaptation was horrendous). Also the youth today is so adhd-riddled (not that we weren’t but its way worse now) due to easy-internet-access via tablets and iphones and streaming services along with tiktok and ig and whatever that i feel like kids dont even care about the same kinda shit we were into….but i could be dead wrong, open to discuss with yall

This show is a perfect example of people (especially parents) disliking something because it is different. This world we live in doesn't like different. One thing i found to be a neat differentiation from the original counterparts to the characters is Techy and Rev being close friends, with the irony that their ancestors were arch nemeses. Really wish more stuff like that was present to make the Loonatics more...different than their ancestral counterparts so that they could stand on their own merits as characters better rather than mostly just be slightly altered versions of their ancestors in a sci-fi setting.

It felt like they were using name recognition to sell us a show that had nothing to do with the previous cartoons or why we loved them. Imagine if they remade Courage the Cowardly Dog, but it's in the future and courage is a giant mecha piloted by a woman named Muriel and a guy named Eustace and they'd battle giant kaiju versions of famous urban legend monsters. Is the premise pretty cool? Maybe, but there's no reason it has to be courage and it detracts from what they're trying to sell. Like they think "this show won't do well on its own, better tack on a name people recognize".

The part about how it's not really acknowledged that the team are super powered anthros living among humans and how they're treated because of it might have a lot to do with the Teen Titans inspiration. In TT, the team goes around the city doing normal stuff (parties, video stores, the pizza place, etc.) in full hero costume without anyone really acknowledging them as a super hero team or giving them much issue. Despite BB being green, Cyborg being half metal, and Robin already being well known as Batman's sidekick. I don't think their civilian names are even mentioned in the series, except for a few gags. Loonatics may have tried to copy that. but it's even weirder if your protagonists are only a handful of super powered anthros that exist in the world.

Well, to be completely fair on all accounts, remembering Looney Toons the OG, they were also talking andromorphs living in a "Human World" at least if Elmer Fudd is anything to go by. I mean he is a human hunter consciously talking to and arguing and joking with a talking rabbit and duck at times without losing a step. Im no looney toons history master or anything so I may be wrong, but this makes me think that maybe thats just the world. To be honest, the Teen Titans thing is a bit weirder because of how that world operates, i mean imagine Batman in full costume walking down the street? Paparazzi mob instantly.

What made the Era so good was the quantity and quality (though not the longevity). There was so much variety and cartoons increasingly had to go hard and be incredibly creative to attempt to find an audience. Nowadays it feels like they just gave up. Cartoons aren't made to appeal to families or all audiences anymore. But to little kids with most falling back on the most simple humor and a lot feeling generic and the same. The biggest problem is there just aren't that many anymore. DC's lineup now compared to any other Era of DC animation is kinda pathetic (and we keep hanging on the edge to see if shows like young justice even get renewed). It's not like there aren't still good animated shows, but they're much fewer and further between and generally feel less creative because of this with the great ones feeling like outliers. Also can't say how spread out among streaming services exclusives they are. Streaming is meant to improve access to media but with all of these exclusives and not just one launcher or browsing experience, kids are much less likely to watch all the good cartoons their Era has to offer.

I can tell how much care was put into the character design when you explained their powers, personality and appearances, and it is a shame that that effort was not recognised. This show was way ahead of its times, but losing sight of its demographic was, in my opinion, one of the worst mistakes they could ever do. A reboot would surely attract a fair share of attention now, provided that they do not dumb it down like they did with the Teen Titans, because thinking about what happened to them makes me shiver.

I grew up on Looney Toons and adored Bugs and Daffy specifically in just about any iteration. One of my favorite shows growing up to the point I had to buy episodes when they wouldn't appear on streaming. The fact that WB didn't put this and Duck Dodgers on HBO Max was always a shame. Both deserve to gain relevance and find the audience they never could. I'd be insanely happy with a continuation or soft reboot of sorts like the Animaniacs (also the reference in that show for lunatics unleashed was dirty and gave me two heart attacks).

I love this show, and it hurts to hear that Warner Bros. either hang it up in their office as a reminder of what not to do, or make fun of it (even in Teen Titans Go, a show that has NO business making fun of any other show ever). Hopefully, they do something with it later down the line. Plus, I feel like it’s partially Warner’s fault with the poor marketing and not fully explaining what this show was and who the characters were. Also, parents…stop ruining the stuff your kids watch.

There is one episode I recall more than any other, probably because it is counter to the gripes you mentioned. Mainly how they are practically the only anthro characters in a world of humans and episodes only focusing on the main task at hand. It's the episode where we meet Rev's family. Turns out his family run a very successful technology company and aren't too happy about their son being best friends with a coyote, even though he is a vegetarian, and the central conflict is more to do with relationships rather than a world ending threat. **edit. After a rewatch, I don't believe Tech is a vegetarian, it was a lie by Rev to ease things for his folks.

What I didn't like about it when it came out was it was just another formulaic case of taking a property and making them scowl, darken the whole thing and make it "extreme" or take a property and tack "babies" or "kids" at the end of their name that we saw so much of in that era and try and cram it down gullible fan's throats. What they never seemed to ask themselves was, would this make a good cartoon without using established properties? What if it used all new characters?
@ChillaxingJay
@ChillaxingJay Жыл бұрын
I dont ever remember watching this as a kid and only heard it referenced several years after it was released. And when I saw a pic of the characters I thought to myself "Why? Who asked for this?". And I also thought these were just edgy versions of the original Looney Tunes characters. But after watching your video and finding out these are actually descendants of the old classic characters and seeing the clips of some of the fight scenes, this looks like a genuinely interesting show. As someone who loved Teen Titans and the old Justice League show, I might even check it out just to see if I'd like it myself. Thanks for another great vid Jordan.

It's so hard for me to believe parents in the US used to have so much influence about what kind of shows channels would show. In my country parents didn't care much about it. I still recall we had access to three or four channels, each with its own animated show at 8am for kids to watch before going to school (we would discuss them during breaks, one my friend would constantly use a catchphrase from one show, don't recall entirely but I think it was pronounced "djovan chopatsu" or something like that), and the episode would be shown again after the 3 pm news broadcast, so kids could watch it again if they missed it at the morning.

I just came from the Huggbees video mocking this, and although I agreed a little on the silliness, I am a sucker for serial, semi-serious superhero team shows. I was more afraid WB made the show look like a serialized cartoon than actually be one. It does raise the question: how far can you stray from the original feel and concept that made a property so popular in the first place? My understanding of Looney Tunes is that it is a surreal meta comedy with established characters and relationships. Why make it a serious, serialized, sci-fi adventure show? Why not just make something original at that point? I’m still not the biggest looney tunes fan in the first place, but maybe this show, had it survived long enough, would have been it for me.
