Spectrobes was set to be the game series from Disney that would rival, and in their eyes, hopefully overthrow the Pokemon franchise. But for Disney with this being their first original IP, Spectrobes had a rocky start to it development and beyond that a franchise that wouldn't last as long as they had hoped for, never finding enough of an fanbase to help the series reach greater heights. Today, I want to take a look at the Spectrobes franchise, dig into what happened to the series in general and find out if I enjoy the series as much as I did originally growing up.

Spectrobes as a franchise is so unique. It’s art style for the monsters were a really good blend of classic Asian mythological creatures and lots of other inspirations. The evolutions just got better with each one too, going from this cute little chibi creature to a giant blue tiger with claw like wings was fantastic to my 12 year old mind. I also always felt the story got better and more mature in a sense as the series progressed. I do wish there had been a way to tame Krawl as some of the designs I actually thought were cool and I’d have loved to add them to my team back in the day. I’d love to see an fan MMO/single player game based further forward/further back allowing you to create your own spectrobe master/Krawl master.

I really enjoyed the Spectrobes games, and I kinda wished Disney kept the series afloat as their own take on the monster catching/taming genre. If Spectrobes was revitalized today I think it could find marginally better success, as nowadays there's a growing subgroup of gamers who want more of the monster catching and taming genre outside of Pokemon.

As much as I would hope for a revival of this series, I know for a fact that the Disney of today would never be able to make something of this level without ruining it with worthless identity politics. I still love Spectrobes. The monster designs were pretty cool. I wish Disney tried to bring it back. I feel like the only thing it didn't really get down was the combat mechanics, they were too loosely designed. I'd also like to see a lot more spectrobes added, and maybe something like fusions or cross evolutions. I think the best game was the one on the Wii.

Spectrobes Origins was the game that I played the most due to one simple fact that it can be played by two players. Which made the game much more fun to play with cause I played it with my brother. This video made me dig out my DS and start playing the games again. I used to LOVE Spectrobes as a kid, probably played more hours on it than I did Pokémon. There were a lot of designs I really didn't like (I don't like anthropomorphic stuff much) but so many were great and just super cool, and being able to have the baby ones follow you in the overworld and help you out? Amazing. The fossil aspect and the process of excavation and waking them up made me feel more invested in them as well as just giving some variety to the game big time - the combat is tedious and monotonous, so being able to dig up a variety of things to find items, Spectrobes and data cubes to find out hints and lore was something to give a refreshing break. I sadly don't have my Wii anymore, but I'm honestly tempted to pick up a copy of Origins for my Wii U and try that out, it looks so polished compared to the DS games and id love to be able to see my favourite 'Trobes in better definition. I'd love to see a modern day revitalising of the games, but maybe with a more teen-adult themed design and story? Pokémon has kids thoroughly grasped by the eyeballs with S+V it seems, but I'd love a more mature, gritty monster tamer.

I miss this series so much. I had a blast talking about these games with my friends and cousins, sharing tips on how to do certain things and where to find certain fossils. It’s such a shame that this series ended the way it did and that we’ll probably never get another one. I would love to see more of it on the switch and maybe even just have the original games themselves on the switch. I never got a chance to play origins so my only way to play it now would be to track down a wii/wii U and a copy of the game which probably won’t be easy.

I have had the worst time trying to find the cult following of this game. It seems to be an enigma online, but I loved these games so much growing up. The hit me just when I needed a little more action than Pokemon had to offer, not to mention the actually decent story that was going on with them as well. I would love to see the games get a reboot and the attention they deserve, but sadly I don't think that will happen. Another thought I had was having a Gacha game made from them. The only problem there is that Gacha games have so much negativity surrounding them that I don't think that would be the best way to revitalize the series.

I appreciate someone taking the time to make a video about Spectrobes. I still own 1 of each copy of the game. I enjoyed the Wii one the most. I would love to see someone who cared about the IP to make another installment of this game series

goodddd I loved spectrobes. "Pokemon but you fight alongside them" was enough to reel me in. And chilling in the incubators, and hoarding enough minerals to start a parade? Miss doing that.

I fondly remember Spectrobes Origins on my Wii as a child, and seeing this video hit me with so much nostalgia for it. My favorite part was always mining out the little fossils to see what they would become, and then evolving them into their frankly stunning 'older' designs.

The Fossil Fighters games would be a good candidate for a video!

@Jordan Fringe Could you please cover "Fossil Fighters" for the Nintendo DS? It was one of my favorite games on the DS as a kid aside from Pokémon. "Spectrobes" reminds me so much of "Fossil Fighters", from digging up rare items with various tools, to using your monsters in battle, to even finding rare monsters to add to your team. I recommend it for those aspects. The story isn't the best, but it's passable for the time it was released in.

Back when I was playing Spectrobes Origins, I struggled a lot on the second half of the game. When I finally made it to the final battle with Krux, I was severely unprepared. So much so that my spectrobes died and was left with Rallen vs. Krux. I was down to a sliver of health and Krux had half. In the end, I was able to beat him by dodging his attacks. It was intense. And I was only going to test the waters to see how much training I would've needed to beat him. That last area was crazy!

Also congrats on the new channel bro! It feels just like your main channel, but about video games. Your humor and personality is still front and center, and you know how to get your points across without sounding a condescending prick lol. Also love the intro, being a gaming version of the old one, the Spyro statue and GameCube immediately caught my eyes.

Very good video. Lots of great info, I really like that you covered all the games as that was a pleasant surprise. I was investigating purchasing these and this video really helped me take a look in depth as to what I would be getting as far as gameplay and experience goes. Thank you very much

Now there is another game for the gameboy I've been trying to crack my memory on as well. All I can say about it is your characters were based around playing card houses (jack/queen/etc) and you had your lady stolen from you from the evil guy and had to get her back. Each level was like timed and you were trying to get to the end before some kind of fuse went off.

Spectrobes is one of my favourite franchises to the point I even had a Gejio plush commissioned! I think Spectrobes was ahead of Pokémon in some ways (real time battling, being able to feed and pet your Spectrobes, Custom Parts/Colours) for the time it released in, but it just didn't have much of Pokémon's marketability. I only found out about the first game through Official Nintendo Magazine, and had no idea there were sequels until a chance find at my local GAME store in 2009! I would love to see Spectrobes make a return one day. The gorgeously intricate, wacky and plain weird designs drew me in alongside the wonderful music!

Don't usually comment on videos, but I want to make the algorithm gods happy. I have a somewhat odd experience with this game. My sister was going to be having a father/daughter dance as part of Girl Scouts around the time this game came out and as a surprise and to try to get in good with her (our relationship with him wasn't great at the time), my father rented a limo (like then long fancy ones) to bring them to the dance. The fun thing here was that the limo was hired for longer than it was needed, so there was time in the day to use it before the dance. So my dad decided to take me to pick up my friend in the limo, and then of all places we drove to Gamestop in the limo. And of all the games we could have gotten there, we both ended up getting Spectrobes. I don't remember much about the game besides the whole digging aspect and I don't know what happened to my copy all these years later, but I will always remember driving to Gamestop in a limousine.
