Hi. New subscriber to your channel here. I fell in love with sumo while living in Japan 25 years ago (great time to be watching sumo!) but after returning home I could never get back into it for long before something changed in my life and I was forced to stop. I'm trying to get back into it again, with this being the third basho I've watched in a row. Anyway, enough with introductions. I just wanted some context to say this video was everything I wanted, aside from actual sumo. Thank you so much for doing this!

You should also look up: “Chris Sumo” for sumo news. Ura’s stable has a KZbin channel “Kisebeya” look that up if you would like to watch daily practice and other behind the scenes daily life content.

What’s crazy is Onosato can break Takerufuji’s record for fastest yusho win if he wins any of the next THREE basho. March was only his 6th!
@TheDohyo6 ай бұрын
It would be a different record. Onosato started in makushita b/c of makushita tsukedashi. Takerufuji started from the maezumo seeding tournament and fought his way through every division.

Great video and info. Curious have you ever thought about doing a video about the 'Sumo food' youtube channel and just how it's blown up into a near 1 million view per vid channel. I've been following Sumo for 7 years now and have never seen Sumo get such high audience like their channel is getting (on social media that is). I think the one way to get the young Japanese audience back into Sumo is through youtube and other popular social media sites. I wonder if the Sumo association has taken noticed and maybe a good idea to incentivize the other stables in doing something similar.
@kkelly94246 ай бұрын
I don't know if you have seen it, but Kise beya is doing something similar. Its worth it to watch just for Ura alone. But better yet, they have a coaching department that includes Akieseyama (sombody just described him as the Peoples Yokozuna), and the one and only Tokushoryu. Really, really entertaining.

Hoshoryu just needs to put on a little more muscle. He is about 315lbs and I think 330lbs would help him immensely against the smaller wreslters that avoid his throws and get under his arms. He is my favorite rikishi and I cant wait to see him as yokozuna!

Hoshoryu gives up dumb losses to the smaller guys. Ura, Tobizaru, and Midorifuji this time. My theory is they are 'smaller' guys that don't fall into his judo heavy counter the bigger guy style thats his bread and butter. Midori in particular was a huge thorn in his side for a long time. On the Migiyno stable thing, getting temporarily folded into Isegahama is probably the best thing that could have happened for the wrestlers, but I'm not sure making a mega stable is what is best for sumo as a whole. What happens when half of makuuchi cant fight each other because of the stable rule? Doesn't seem particularly well thought out to me, especially with another bulling scandle breaking last week too.
@TheDohyo6 ай бұрын
I agree with your Hoshoryu theory. Smaller guys give him trouble...
@zoicon56 ай бұрын
The "mega stable" problem isn't really an issue right now (at least in Makuuchi) because Hokuseiho was Miyagino's only top division wrestler. Hakuoho will probably be back, but not as fast as people had thought he would.

Kind of fun that Kiho and Takerufuji are reunited for the time being after being university teammates! Also Hakuoho and Tenshoho are also Tottori johoku high alumni!
@danielhazelrigg43516 ай бұрын
Uni sumo has generated alot of guys that explode on the scene trick us into Yokozuna hopefuls and then fade out (Mitakeumi, Shodai, Asanoyama, Kotomitsuki, Miyabiyama, Musonoyama, Dejima), all of whom never won a yusho once they reached Ozeki. Onosato looks to have a chance if he can match his brute force with amazing technique and ring awareness, but Takerufuji will ultimately be limited by his knees which have already had multiple major injuries to them
@TheDohyo6 ай бұрын
It's still VERY early to say, but Onosato is rising faster, and contending for yusho faster than Asanoyama, Mitakeumi and Shodai did (I never saw the others outside of KZbin archives). I am also worried about Takerufuji's knees, but you never know how long a rikishi can last with a bad knee. Tochinoshin made it a good long way. Current examples Ura and Takanosho have been relatively genki despite major knee injures...

Hakuoho just needs a couple more weeks to adjust to the new shoulder sockets. But it seems that the entire beya was demoralized by the harshness that came with the scandal. I wonder what Hokuseiho is going to do for a new career.

3:05 He actually had some really bad injury issues when in amateur sumo, as mentioned later in the video. Likely the reason he delayed his debut so much. For the history of sumo, we might be seeing a revolution brewing up. We seemed to have the new world order set for the post-Hakuho era, with a young, yet unusually evenly-paced ozeki contingent settling in... yet now we have Onosato, breaking through at a faster speed than even Hoshoryu... and then there's Takerufuji, actually destroying records in his rise to the top. Maybe this "new world order" wasn't meant to be; maybe they were gatekeepers for the next big thing all along. Maybe some of them will still rise (money's on Hoshoryu because of his age and better injury history, but at this rate who knows). But maybe, just maybe... the yokozuna candidates have only just arrived. Next basho will show a lot; whether Onosato and Takerufuji can keep up the pace with the top brass... and maybe even get started on their ozeki runs.

There are a few specific amateur tournaments you have to win or place high enough in to qualify for a tsukedashi start, and the qualification normally only lasts for a year. I don't have the details at hand, but either Takerufuji didn't do well enough in those tournaments (I believe this was the case), or he did it too early in his college career.
@TheDohyo6 ай бұрын
I thought he would have earned Sandanme tsukedashi at least!

Takakeisho's heart really impressed me this tournament. You can tell his neck is pretty messed up and it's really affecting his sumo, but he gutted it out to get to 8 wins. I still don't think he'll stay healthy enough to reach yokozuna, but I want him to stay at Ozeki as long as he can. And I'm not even a fan!

See, I'm torn... He's my favorite rikishi, but I REALLY don't want him to mess up his neck, long-term.
