It has been six years that a wrestlers not named Terunofuji won two bashos in a row. There seems to be so many potential winners and with no one dominating the others. Overall 14-15 wins are becoming really rare score. Yusho+jun-yusho with 26+ wins seems a tall order unless someone takes a leap over their rivals.

Ozeki watch for September 2024. How many wins do eligle wrestlers need in September for 33 total. Onosato 12, Daiesho and Hiradoumi 14 and Abi 15. Bonus being Takakeisho with 10. Of those I would say Onosato is to only possible option to reach their needed win totals.

Rooting for Teru to get yusho number 10. I bet almost everyone's kachi clash is in shambles. Based on what Sumo Database tells me, Takayasu has about a 2/3 chance of remaining in Makuuchi. Onosho (M5e) is almost certain to drop to Juryo; it would take some very strange circumstances to keep him in Makuuchi. Fun fact: in March 2018 at M5w, he was kyujo for the whole basho. He dropped to J1w for May and won the Juryo yusho with a 12-3 score.

This basho is going in a way that we can have a very interesting September banzuke. We might have no yokozuna, 2 ozeki, 4 sekiwake and both current komusubi keeping their spots. While majority of top maegashira will go down in the rankings.

I’m looking forward to the “JWags was wrong” segment of the recap video… not that I could have predicted the outcome of this basho any better. Kotozakura seemed like a good choice for yusho winner and Terunofuji seemed like he was still 2 months away from contention. I think it’s good for the sport to have a strong and dominant Yokozuna but I agree with JWags that there is not a lot of drama this basho.

Did not see this from Terunofuji either...happy to see it. He's the summit! I think he's aiming for Dai Yokozuna status, which is probably for certain. Honestly Terunofuji looks like he might be going into a different phase of his sumo. Gone is his ability to have that dai-kaiju style of sumo that involves him all but bowling his opponents down the aisle. Which has been replaced with a more careful and measured approach that comes with years of experience.

Teru doesn't need the yusho, but it kinda feels right. He stepped into the post-Hakuho void and stood astride sumo even when his body told him he couldn't. He let the rikishi corps through the Covid nightmare, has fought through the unimaginable, and has carried on with all the dignity of a great champion. Yusho or not, give the man his flowers while he's still here. One last cup and a well-deserved ride into the sunset would be absolutely perfect (then we can focus on the dumpster fire of chaos behind him on the banzuke)

poor Asanoyama, man. I didn't get to see much of him fight since I only got into sumo just last year (right around when he was back up in Juryo after the suspension), but MAN his body just won't give him a break. I'm not holding my breath, but I really hope he is able to get truly healthy and one day bounce back, he has far too much sumo talent to go out like this. It's good to see the Yokozuna kicking ass again though :)
@HawaiiDave
@HawaiiDave 8 күн бұрын
I agree with you. Prior to his suspension he looked like a future Yokozuna. He made a fast comeback to makuuchi but mounting injuries have made it seem like even a return to Ozeki is unlikely. It must be so hard mentally to suffer all of the setbacks since his suspension. This last injury looked so bad and you wonder if he can make a Terunofuji like rise from the ashes. I’m pulling for him because he’s so talented and I want to see him back at full strength.

I've aid it before and I'll say it again: Takakeisho is a one-trick pony. Do literally ANYTHING besides go head-to-head in a push/thrust match with him, and you'll beat him. Why there are some wrestlers who still haven't figured this out, I have no idea. I knew even in his prime (which is weird to say since he's still in his 20's) that he'd never be yokozuna.

I've been trying to get into other stables other than Futogoyama, their channel brought me into sumo. I'd like to find some more stables to root for. Any advice?
@LauraJdogmom
@LauraJdogmom 11 күн бұрын
One strategy is to settle on some rikishi that you like, then follow their stables. My favorite rikishi is Ura, so I pay attention to his stable, Kise beya. Kise is also home to Kinbozan, Churanoumi, Shimanoumi, Shiden, and Hidenoumi,. Arashio beya is home to the Onami brothers Wakatakamoto, Wakamotoharu, and Wakatakakage. Isegahama is a powerhouse, with Terunofuji, Atamifuji, Midorifuji, Takarafuji, Nishikifuji, Takerufuji, and Hakuoho. The GOAT Hakuho (Miyagino) is a coach there. Oitekaze beya is another strong heya, with six sekitori: Daieisho, Tobizaru, Endo, Daiamami, Daishoho, and Tsurugisho. Or maybe you'll decide to follow a stable with up-and-comers; for instance, Ajigawa, home of rising star Aonishiki. Another strategy is to see which heya have social media. Many of them have Twitter aka X, Tik Tok, and/or Instagram accounts, though I couldn't tell you which ones. Tamanoi beya just recently started a KZbin channel. It looks like they will have English versions of at least some of the videos, as their Okami-san (stablemaster's wife) speaks good English. Other channels with some English content (subtitles) include Shikoroyama and Minato. The boys at Shikoroyama are pretty adorable. Finally, you could keep track of the few heya that are trying to do things differently. Yokozuna Kisenosato's Nishonoseki-beya has particularly wrestler-friendly facilities. The newly minted Nakamura beya, led by former Sekiwake Yoshikaze, serves breakfast and does their sumo training in the afternoon, with mornings reserved for conditioning. In the sumo world, he's a revolutionary. Don't try too hard to find your rooting interests, whether for a heya or for individual rikishi. No pressure! Just enjoy the sport and see whose sumo you like watching. You may find that your preferences change over time.

I fear Kirishima is doomed to demotion, he just hasnt looked good and has very little wiggle room at this point. Takakeisho might just squeak by if they give him an easy schedule avoiding Teru. Teru may well go 15-0 or 14-1. He has been doing basic big man sumo and has shown why even at 80% he is better than everyone else right now. I truly hope he maintains and writes his story as Dai Yokozuna, he is a special wrestler and his legacy is already secure, but that 10th would mean a lot to him im sure.
