When Jamie won during our watch party, most of us were pretty confused. But my father, as wise as he is, put it best. “Jamie Lee Curtis is an amazing actress, but her career consisting largely genre films and tv has meant she has never had a chance to be nominated. This award is not for Jamie’s performance in EEAAO, but for a lifetime of great acting. Sure, there were better performances from that category this year, but JLC *is* the Best Supporting Actress”

I just really appreciated how this year, the animation category didn't start with the presenters treating animation as "kiddy stuff". Not only did Guillermo give his "animation is a medium" speech, but Dwayne Johnson explained that animation is pretty much tied to film history. That was a good surprise, and hopefully, this continues every year, along with more animated films being nominated in the other categories.

This is really what the Oscar’s should be: recognition. Recognition for the hard work so many people put into each area of putting together a piece of art. No forced comedy or cutting for time. Just time for saying “hey look at what these cool people have done! Isn’t that cool?!”

Really happy that RRR won best song. There are so many Indian movies that have such great music, and the fact that they are finally getting recognized is amazing. The Academy rubbed me the wrong way when they didn't let India nominate Sardhar Udham, the movie about freedom fighters and Indian revolution (they said it glorified terrorism, which is just so stupid), but it looks like they are changing for the better!
@MutantMonke
@MutantMonke Жыл бұрын
The last indian submission nominated for best foreign film, was an anti colonial masala film about cricket. RRR is also an anti colonial masala film. I think they didn't nominate sardar udham was because it wasn't made to be entertaining like lagaan and rrr and provided a way more harsh and realistic portrayal of colonialism.

It is an amazing movie, and shows the darker side of the revolution as opposed to ht lighthearted tone of RRR.

I thought All Quiet on the Western Front's strongest asset was its score. It wasn't triumphant, or loud, or really all that noticeable, I recommend anyone to rewatch that movie, but when it kicks in let the music take you through your feelings. It't used infrequently but, I thought that the scarcity of the haunting tones were what made it special, always I got chills hearing it. (this was kind of like certain parts of puss and boots, no spoilers, if you know you know) Additionally the first scene was so interesting and made great use of that disturbing score. At the very least I think it deserved to have won based on how unique it was to me.

This is what he said: "You know, before this night started um..Corey Feldman, one of my Goonies brothers called. I was talking to Kerri Green. And of course, tonight, Jeff Cohen - who is my entertainment lawyer - was with me in the audience, which is why I thanked him. Because, I love all of them so much! I agree with Shaff on a lot of things, but I honestly think that him saying All Quiet was an "average war movie" is such a (metaphorical) bullet to the chest. All Quiet was honestly such a great movie and leveling it to an average war movie hurts. And while the score (besides Remains) wasn't as memorable as some other nominations, I absolutely think that the cinematography was amazing. There were several points in this movie where I just marveled at the camera work and the shot comps. Plus, that introduction scene with the soldier dying and his clothes being recycled perfectly set the tone and was already making me prepare for the incoming doom that was about to happen. The lead actor also did a phenomenal job, the crater scene really stands out- everytime he cries, it feels like genuine tears. They're gross, uncontrolled not pretty to hear- it was almost gut-punching. I could go on but the point is, I respect anyone's point on this movie, it is surely not for everyone. But to anybody calling it an average war movie, it really is so much more than it may seem and the team behind it are talented at their craft. I also highly recommend the BTS for the movie on Netflix, it's great.

The thing that hit me most was when John Travolta got emotional when talking about all the actors and actresses that we had lost this year, paying homage to Olivia Newton-John. My school decided to do grease for this year’s production, and I got Danny Zuko and a great friend of mine got Sandy. It just hurts so much to think how Olivia is actually gone, and seeing Travolta say “We are forever Hopelessly devoted to you” almost brought me to tears. It made me feel ever more indebted to the character of Danny Zuko and the show of Grease, it made me feel even more devoted to that friend who took the roll with me, to my Sandy Counterpart. And it showed me the strength and beauty that art, be it film, musical, book or animation, can impose on people. RIP Olivia Newton-John We will forever be hopelessly devoted to you.

The Little Mermaid thing was funny for me. My boyfriend's mom was watching the show when it was airing. When the Little Mermaid bit came on, I made an off-handed comment along the lines of "It's gonna be bad, because they're all bad." But then she was like "How do you know, the actors all seem happy with how it all went," because she thought the movie was already released. (she's smart enough to stay out of Disney train wreck news, unlike myself.) I had to explain "No, the film isn't actually out yet, they put an ad in the middle of the show." She was not very amused by Disney doing that. "It's very cheeky of them to do that," she said. That lead into a fun conversation where my boyfriend and I told her all about how Disney is imploding, how specifically they got to this point, and how they're becoming very desperate. Also very happy Pinocchio won. On top of really loving that movie, I hope that means Del Toro's At the Mountain of Madness movie gets greenlit.

A requiem for “All Quiet on the Western Front”: I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. This is the first truly anti-war movie and, even if it is the remake of a remake of a book, the execution and cinematography sent it over the top. For me, this is one of the greatest war movies of all time, and most certainly the greatest WW1 film of all time. I have a lot of heritage in WW1 so I set a lot of my creative writing stories there and I’m glad to see Hollywood filmmakers showcasing the freedom of writing stories in that time period. You can’t write WW2 from the Nazi’s perspective without some hero against the regime, and you can’t write an American Civil War movie from the Confederate’s perspective without someone fighting who’s antislavery. WW1 truly shows the psychology of soldiers on both sides in a way you can’t truly do with other conflicts. As a war movie enjoyer, All Quiet on the Western Front deserves all of its awards this year (Except for the score.) Bassett got robbed too.

"Why do they still have the best International Feature Film category?" Well, because for the longest time, the Oscars only included American films in the big, important categories and completely ignored the work of creative minds outside their borders. And that the winner of this category is also nominated for Best Pictures is a relatively new phenomenon, because for many years it was simply unthinkable. Maybe it is an excuse from the Academy to look more diverse in their big categories. And to save the reputation of "All quiet on the western front": I think many people struggle with this movie because they do not know or realize that these were real things that happened, that the author Remarque wrote down after he returned home from this ongoing, pointless fight. Because the fighs on the Western Front were maybe one of the deadliest fights in World War 1, and it benefitted nobody. The original titel "Im Westen nichts Neues" directly translates into "No news from the Western Front", which is one of the last sentences in the book, even though the protagonist had just died. Soldiers weren't important anymore, death was normal. I can really recommend this book if you are interested in WW1 stories. It was brilliant, I read through it in a night for my German class, it broke me, I never want to read it again.

The ending ties into one of my problems with the All Quiet movie: so the original title "nothing new on the western front" is because Paul dies on a day that is relatively uneventful for WW1. There's just nothing special about the day he dies and that's part of what's so pointless and tragic about it. Conversely, the movie makes him die at the very last second, on the day of the armistice. Like Armistice Day is not a day where there's nothing new to report lol. I feel like that's sort of a microcosm of the issue. The whole movie was just unnecessarily bombastic IMO.

Yea it managed to be a war movie that successfully avoided glamorizing war completely. Most films that intend to be anti war still end up with audiences who are inspired to join military service because of scenes in the movie but All Quiet was just so overall demoralizing and really showed the pointlessness and brutality of war in a way I haven’t seen any other movies accomplish. None of the characters feel like heroes and the combat scenes are terrifying and suspenseful whereas in a “standard war film” the combat scenes would feel exciting. Calling it a standard war movie was a serious and rare lapse in judgement on his part

It was a great film but am I the only one that thinks that the ending sucked, like really sucked. For me the film would've been so much better if the film ended when Tjaden died. Kat getting killed so close to the end felt like a cheap way to add brutality to a film that already had plently of it considering the subject matter, it really struck me as an incredibly forced gutpunch. On top of all that the whole "last victory before armistice" sequence just genuinely felt like one of the writers really wanted to show off how much they liked Battlefield 1 and wanted to appease to the crowd that need all their war films to be packed full of epic combat where the protag is a one man army. Idk it just felt really out of touch with the rest of the film and how disempowering it was. It was such a curveball that it kind of ruined an otherwise excellent film for me.

10:02 All quiet on the western front is the english translation for the book/movie, the original name is “Im Westen nichts Neues” which is actually means “nothing new in the west”. It’s based on how the author, who was a WW1 veteran, saw a newpaper that said the same thing even though he was there and it was absolutely horrible and full of typical war stuff. That being said I understand why you wouldn’t like it, because, while I haven’t finished the 2022 version, I doubt it’s better than the book or the 1930 movie. They seem pretty tame and normal when it comes to war media, but back then it was pretty unheard of to tell a story where war was shown in a bad light.

I'm probably biased since I'm argentinian, but I really, really wanted Argentina 1985 to win; Not only for the gag of winning the third one (Ganamos la tercera), but also because it is simply, in my opinion, a great movie. It taught me about my country's history with the storys of the witnesses, that were truly heartbreaking, and that final speech that Darín's character does, that "Nunca Más" really brought me to tears. To put it simply, it made me quite emotional. Despite my bitter thoughts, however, it was a well deserved win for All Quiet in the Western Front. All in all, like you said, a surprisingly good Oscar's. I liked All Quiet on the Western Front. It's a pretty good movie. Problem is you do have to understand the tragedy of WWI to experience the full impact of it. It's great when it comes to giving you an experience of the war from the German side. It shows you the desperation for the German men to get supplies. It shows how the men went into the war imagining it as a fun trip, which is how so many soldiers actually went into it. It displays how not even the main character is immune to death (although he does have some plot armor during the French armored assault). Overall it perfectly displays the tragedy of the war. Schaff of course has a different opinion but I think it was good. It did not deserve Best Original Score though.
