Wait...WHAT?! The Dodge Durango Shelby SP360 Was The Hellcat of SUV'S

Yup its real. an actual Shelby built dodge durango with a 5.9L Supercharged V8 under the hood!
this was the hellcat of suv's and it was the precursor to the modern jeep Cherokee srt8! if you look hard enough you can still find some of these gems.
But don't expect to pay anything under $12k for a decent one.

After my dad passed, I was left with his 02 Durango r/t 5.9 with awd/4x4. The motor I think has since been ruined but we always talked about putting a blower on the 360 that it had. Oh man. This was my dream car in '99. I ended up getting a '00 R/T Durango AWD because half the price. The Shelby was 60-75K back in '99. The RT was arpund 35K back in '00. My Durango was followed by '08 SRT Jeep with Novi Supercharger, exhaust etc. One of the original mopar/SRT guys. My Durango was as fast or faster 0-60 as the Shelby. I added flowmaster exhaust with turn down pipes, CAI, mopar chip which also carried higher shift points, Gibson stainless headers with locktite on torque bolts, throttlebody spacer, oversized cone filter for CAI, wicked 18" OZ Nova wheels on Pirelli scorpions, rancho RS9000X air ride shocks, Stillen brake pads and rotors, street scenes complete front honeycomb grill in matte silver and few other things. It hauled ass! It only had 4 or 5 gears and topped out at 115mph. But it was very fast 0-60 (5-6 seconds). It handled amazing. Great in the rain. Great offroad in 4Lo. Looked good. Towed good. Sounded epic. Engine good. However, the inner and outter tie rods were junk, rear end junk, tranny junk, rear drum brakes junk. Once it hit 100K miles that was that. But it ran like a champ those first 100K. I miss it. Thanks for sharing this vid. Those middle row captain seats were rad🤘

Frank Wiley the 454’s in early trucks made 230 crank hp at best, a lot of potential but not in stock form. Dodge didn’t go on a power trip cause of gmc stuffing 454’s in their trucks, in fact they found a emission loophole that stated only cars had to have catalytic converters and smog equipment. Therefore the first muscle truck was made, the lil red express.

In 2000 we bought a NEW 99 Shelby Pursuit Durango (no Super Charger, Hideous wheels or gaudy leather interior) for $38,500 (sticker was $48,900) as it had been on the lot for a year - it had less than 100 miles on it. All White, tan interior, 3rd row & 4x4 - it had upgraded heads, cam & intake, upgraded injectors, long tube headers & true duals along with all of the Super Pursuit body kit. Loved that truck, would love to find another!! Unfortunately, my now ex didn't make 2 payments (slipped her mind while she was being unfaithful) & it was repo'd.

What's really sad is a first gen grand Cherokee 5.9 with no mods would out run that Durango. I've had two 5.2 318 first gen Grand Cherokees (when they were basically new) and they absolutely were the sleeper truck/SUV of the early and mid 90's. I pissed A LOT of people off in those things and left them scratching their heads. Back then you could even order MOPAR performance goodies from the dealership for the Magnum engines and as long as they were dealer installed, you retained full warranty. Still a damn cool Durango. It just wasn't that much quicker than a V8 Jeep for the price difference but the "cool" factor is definitely there. 👍

One huge problem with these was the weak trans and rear end. They didn't hold up well with stock hp and torque. They really should have upgraded those as well. Still an issue with Dodge today. The 360 was a great durable power plant for many, many years though. If you buy one of these, you might want to invest in transmission internals and a quality cooler. You can also get heavy duty gears and axles for the rear end fairly cheap. These were not built by Shelby either. They were sent off after production to a number of different aftermarket companies for the extra goodies with only Shelby lending his name for marketing purposes.

I have a 2001 R/T, they come standard with transmission cooler built into the radiator. The 2001 R/T has the 8 1/4 TracLok which has held up well. One of the issues is with the TracLok during fluid changes. Many aftermarket fluids claim to have all the needed friction modifier, but this is NOT the case. I just changed the gasket and fluid in the rear differential. Added the correct Mopar friction modifier. Huge improvement in performance. If properly taken care of the rear differential is solid. If not done right, problems will arise.

Can someone tell what's the use of buying a high performance SUV ,you can neither take it off-road because of those body kits nor can you corner well while driving it very fast ,I mean I just love high performance SUVs ,but I have never figured it out myself why i like it!

Keye T Shelby was probably the catalyst behind this. Bought the Durango’s in bulk & modified them to be sold on a special lot. Chrysler was too cheap back then to commission that themselves im sure.

The drag strip clip was a bit underwhelming. Also a redline of less than 6k wasn’t expected. The trans shifted at 5k ffs. I’m not sure I’d plop my money down on this even though I love rare cars like this
