The undisputed Heavy weight champ of the 90s sedans! the 1991-1996 Chevrolet caprice 9c1 ss is still one of the most sought after of the retired cop cars!
with its 5.7L LT1 V8 straight from the corvette its no wonder these land yachts go on forever

I am retired NYPD and a '95 Caprice 9C1 owner this is a great and accurate video. The '94-'96 GM B-Body aka Impala SS/Caprice 9C1(I guess you can toss in the Buick Roadmaster too) is way more mod friendly with a whole lot more go fast parts available than the Ford Crown Vic and the other Panther platform cars. You can even get complete high performance suspension setups from outfits like SC&C, Speedtech and others. Fun fact: the front suspension is the same as the 2nd Gen F-Body(Camaro and Firebird) designed by GM's suspension wizard Herb Adams. One reason why they handled so well for a "big car". They Highway Units in my Department loved them more then the Vic's. Oh they loved the Vics but the Caprice were faster and had more power. The Vics didn't get to the 250 HP mark until way into the 21 Century. You are right the 4L60e is a POS of a transmission. Don't ask me how I know.

I had few 4l60E,all you have to do is reprogram the computer and bring the line pressure up ,if you don't want to spend money on better torque converter, but once you do, make sure you bring the line pressure down to normal! or every time you upshift or down shift, your head will meet front or rear windows!LOL

That is absolutely incorrect. The Caprice and impala SS were the exact same body. The Cadillac Fleetwood (D-body) had 6" more rear legroom. None was wider than the other. The LT1 engine was the same in all B- and D-body cars, but had less power than the Corvette or Camaro which had the LT1 first.

I am a police officer in Indiana and my older colleagues rave about how great the 1993 Caprice 5.7 9C1 was. It seems that a good portion of the 1993s had no top speed limiter (was changed in 94); and I have been told by both state police troopers and members of other departments that it was by far the fastest patrol vehicle they have ever driven. A state police Lieutenant told me they took one to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and got it up to a radar confirmed 172mph before she blew up on them. Additionally a member of the department I work for said that on a closed road he reached a radar confirmed 161mph. The damn Caprice was also great in the snow I have been told, and still today every officer I know that drove one says they would trade their new patrol vehicles (all are command staff now) for a 1993 Caprice 9C1.

I have a '92 Caprice Classic with roughly 82.5K miles on it. My dad more or less gave me the car as a gift and discovered that the previous and original owner ordered it from the factory with a 5.0 9c1. Apparently the old dude used the car to travel in areas with a lot of mountains and wanted a more durable V8 for this purpose. The old guy was also a perfectionist and kept the car IN VERY GOOD SHAPE both mechanically and on the exterior. It needs a few small odd & end fixes but the car is otherwise SOLID and has quick get up and go.........Seems to run a bit more smoothly with mid grade octane gasoline.....Rides like a Cadillac.....

Not true, actually. The 4.3 V8 (baby LT1) was just as fast as the 5.7 V8 UP TO ABOUT 60 MPH. I had one in my 96. That is why the police city cars were often 4.3 V8s. They got slightly better fuel mileage too. From 60 MPH UP, the 5.7 V8 WALKS AWAY from the 4.3. That is why the HIGHWAY PATROL cars were 5.7 units. There was a little sticker on the side window of the 5.7 9C1 (police package) units. It said CLOSE ALL WINDOWS ABOVE 140 MPH. True facts.

Drove one for twelve long years. I had the tranny rebuilt 3 times. replaced the alternator like 10 times. MAF sensors , PC valves, etc . Replaced the cap and rotors 7 or 8 times. Had to constantly replace coolant hoses to the point I carried extra in the trunk. This car stayed in the shop , but it never broke down completely and left me stranded. It made two coast to coast trips and at the end of the dy I practically gave it away to a shop owner who then sold it to pay for his wifes funeral expenses. The car had a slow exhaust leak that probably wouldve eventually killed me had I not been rolling the windows down all the time. If you calculate all the money I put into this damn thing I couldve hd a brand new corvette. It was a white elephant for sure, but it was a blast to drive especially when Caprices were in high demand 2002-2009. This car was a rolling motel and had a lot of history in it

My experience was spot on the same. It was the best ride I ever had (I bought it from LAPD with 62K miles). I was told that police adjusted the transmission so it stayed longer in 2nd gear, and they put in a high temperature (200 degree) thermostat so the engine would run hot all the time. The car had insane power - when the engine was hot in LA traffic, it would go by itself at 40-45 mph, I just stepped on the brake time-to-time to slow it down. I never seen anything like it. I had to learn how to go from the stoplight so it wouldn't spin the tires. But maintenance was a nightmare. It was in the shop every two months, each cost me about 500 dollars. When the transmission went bad at 83K miles, the dealer overhauled it ($1800) but it was never the same again. Finally so many things broke down that the dealer told me not to spend more money on it. I gave it away too. But I regret it.

One of the most enjoyable cars I ever drove and certainly the best cop car during my career. That's about the time the CHP was buying Ford Mustangs since they were the fastest available then.

My 1996 4.3 has the original 4L60E transmission with 340,000 miles and still shifts perfectly thanks to quality Dexron VI synthetic. I have never heard of, or ever had, any issues with a faulty fuel gauge. I was waiting for the Optispark garbage to be thrown in at the end but real Caprice enthusiasts know that is not the case. 99% of Optispark issues are due to bad electrical grounds or shorted out spark plug wires. Oh yeah, I've gone through two alternators in 340,000 miles.

Been this way since I bought it. I just reset the trip odometer and if I've been doing city driving, start to look for a fillup at around 250 miles.

Correction on the engine. The LT 1 that is in the Caprice is NOT the same engine as in the Corvette. The Caprice LT 1 uses a 2 bolt main bearing engine with a different cam for more torque and a little less top end. The Corvette uses a 4 bolt main engine. The Camaro SS used the same engine as the Corvette. The fuel gauge problem I had was corrected by replacing the entire system in the tank. I also soldered the wires on because the factory clips were loose and caused issues. It reads perfect now. The reason the tranny's go out is because cops are very hard on their cars. The alternators go out because of the loads put on them by lights, sirens, etc. Once you replace it you should be good for a very long time.

Actually (IMO) the B-Body GMs and Ford Panthers have more in common than either would admit. Both got a raw shake in corporate strategy. They both filled a niche very, very well. Like americ's best engineer once opined "Keep it simple, stupid." Bodies and Panther did exactly that. That was probably what killed them both. They were too simple to command a $35,000 price point., and without that high a price they could not cover legacy costs. So they dumped them for pricy, complex SUVs.
@TWX1138
@TWX1138 5 жыл бұрын
The GM B-body was retired because demands for increased fuel economy and crash worthiness when weighed against lower demand for the cars due to image meant it wasn't economical to keep building them, even down at that less-expensive-to-operate plant in Texas. Ford retired the Panther for similar reasons, but in Ford's case it was a double-whammy of police departments themselves seeking to move from sedans to SUVs/Crossovers. Chrysler's introduction of the 300 in 2005 lacked a police variant. I have to wonder if that was intentional, to avoid having the new-car-buying public associate that car body with police cars.

No slippage, knocks or rough idles. *Already have fuel gauge issue and need to chop the cat due to leaks. *Fuel vent hose has to be replaced due to rotting. *Needs new fan blower for AC/heat. *Needs new Pitman Arms and Inner&Outer Tie Rods. ~Electrical issues are the Airbag and ABS malfunctioning though don't care for that as I have an older car than this that doesn't have these features.

I got excited about it and now I ended up keeping the Motor instead of my original idea to get rid of it, think I'm gonna find a Impala or a Caprice hell maybe a Roadmaster Wagon and put the 6.0 in it. Actual lineage: 9C1 led to Impala SS which then kicked Ford into the Marauder. GM sold a boatload of Impala SS and Ford wanted a piece of that action. The 9C1 (like the P71 crown Vic) had slightly taller suspension than the Impala SS. My Imp drags on everything, but the P71 flies over parking curbs.

you forgot to mention the rear brake lines are common to split on GM B Bodies. But now also if you get the L99 4.3 V8 models. You get the 700R4(4L60) Turbo Hydramatic transmission. While the 4L60E comes in the 5.7 LT1 as it is a computerized sports car engine. Electrical is a nightmare on all cop cars and taxis. As well as old school busses. The fuel filler neck issue can be fixed with a poly tank and filler neck swap. But the best part about all B Bodies. A tow package is easily available for a 4300 pound car that with the PC1 as referred to by the NYPD. When fully loaded. Weighs as much as an 85 K20 when fully loaded. 5800-6400 pounds of gear. This video was wayyyyy to short. These are great cars and the 5.7 is a great engine and can be very reliable if it was taken care of however there is nothing that was really touched up on besides reading quick bullet points. The transmission (a 4L60E) isn't terrible but definitely not great (can be a hit or a miss, truly). It is true however that they are super cheap to get rebuilt and the faults that these transmissions had can be easily fixed/modified to make them bulletproof. Another point is that the 5.7 in the 94-96 (dubbed the LT1) is a whole lot different than the 91-93 5.7 (dubbed the L05) the LT1 made near 100 more HP and 30 more LB-FT of torque. There is no mention in the video of this and they are essentially two totally different engines even if they are both 350s. Another problem that was not touched up on that viewers who are really looking to purchase a Caprice/Impala SS/Buick Roadmaster (all had the same engines from 91-96) is that the LT1 came with the dreaded "OptiSpark" distributor that GM decided to place behind the water pump. If the water pump were to leak, It would destroy these distributors and could ultimately leave you stranded if it is not serviced. The 95 and 96 LT1 came with a vented water pump to help alleviate the problem and it DID help but didn't completely fix the problem, just something to look for. The 94 LT1 was NOT vented, it tended to have more optispark failures than the later version, just another thing to consider. The L05, though somewhat slower, is a very reliable engine and can take quite a beating so if you're looking for a comfortable ride and a smooth V8 then you may want to look into buying the 91-93 B-bodies as they can be cheaper than an LT1 equipped B-body, just something to consider. I am personally not looking to buy one of these B-bodies as I've already owned one but if I were than this video wouldn't have been too helpful.
@hakemon
@hakemon 5 жыл бұрын
The 94 LT1 in the B-Bodies ARE in fact vented. You are wrong on that. Every 94 I have encountered, including those that were virgins to a mechanic, still had vented hoses. This is for the B-Bodies however, they were the first to get it a year early.
