"Mexican Blackbird" is tremendous, but I don't know if the lyrical content is something people not from another era will appreciate. "Her mamma was Mex-can and her daddy was the ace-a-spades" no matter how incredible that line is delivered might be too much for some. I'll throw in "Whiskey'n Mama", "Brown Sugar" (not the Stones song) and "Precious & Grace" as my lesser known song picks.

ZZ Top' s original sound before MTV even existed. More catchy, laid back and bluesy. When they went poppy in the early 80s, they were still good, mainly due to their videos, but adding synths and drum machines just didn't sound right. Yes, Eliminator was their top selling record, but mainly due to the MTV videos.

@arthurgoerner4884 жыл бұрын
Boys, one thing you have to understand about ZZ Top. Ok, 2. First, they went a little MTV later on. While they lost a little of their sauce factor going more radio friendly later, their tone, and legendary riffs continued, and they got tighter in their play as they went on. They were VERY successful in the eighties with their videos, and while some people think they lost their edge, those songs are still very good. Secondly, their vast majority of stuff is very good. They are not a "couple decent hits" band.Saw 'em in '87. EVERY Song was some kind of jam. That is why you see so many different favorite ZZ Top songs listed here. It depends on what you are looking for, stylistically. But see how many DIFFERENT songs are listed here? I believe if you keep listening to ZZ Top, you may find a song or three you think is A plus or better. They have a lot of jams.

There's a lyric in Jesus Just Left Chicago - "Took a jump through Mississippi - Well, muddy water turned to wine." For some reason, for years as a kid I thought it was saying "Muddy Waters," the musician, "turned to wine." As if Jesus jumped through Mississippi and he became a wino. It didn't occur to me what he was actually saying "turn water into wine?" Just one of those missed meanings, but every time I hear it now, that's all I can think of.

I agree. We can’t seem to get the boys to do that one. It’s been requested numerous times for months! By me too.

probably have to Patreon that. Walsh, Eagles. Beatles, Zeppelin and a few others have armies of copyright lawyers with their fingers on the dump button.

I Need You Tonight is a personal ZZ Top favorite of mine. It is pure blues magic with Billy Gibbons heavily distorted guitar and it really works.

“Cheap Sunglasses” is the safe pick, but I’d go for “A Fool for Your Stockings.”

Wha... oh damn, there is a short version. But shit, it's not even long enough to hold the solo.

Nothing like 20-somethings say they “don’t like” the tones of legends... lol. You guys make me laugh... lol. Keep it going, boys.

That bass tone is killer. That will put hair on a mans chest. Some old ampeg driving some celestion speakers hard.

The blues is sublime music, as a gift resulting from the sublimation of immense suffering, the blues is also the mother of rock

You're thinking of When the Levee Breaks. ZZ-Top isn't going to give you any S Tier songs. They're going to give you some really gritty, really dirty, really tasty, songs that don't take the boat out too far, but many of which fall solidly in A territory. PS - You still need to do the seminal Young Man Blues from the Who's Live at Leeds album. One of their finest live moments ever.

Yes. Who. Young man blues live, Isle of White festival iirc. Excellent shout!

@@zzuave2666 I'm partial to the 1969 London Coliseum version, but both of the versions cited have their merits. Definitely the video for the Isle of Wight 1970 version! The London Coliseum version (from The Kids Are Alright soundtrack) is the one that always gets the hairs on my arms to raise up!

Spot on for, both, your take on ZZ (though "A territory" is far too generous - B at best) and a call for Live at Leeds. Young Man Blues is a nice place to start, I suppose.
