Do you have reviews for the movies in the series from 1967 to 1983? I'm really enjoying these.

@@butcherax yes but he deleted those because they were more like standard reviews than history videos, but he started to do a more history oriented i think when he did history of terror of mechagodzilla, but it started to pick it more modern form in the history of the return of Godzilla, and now he is re-doing the showa era in a more history oriented style.

I haven't watched the original review but I remember seeing the thumbnailI recommended a few times on the phone. I came across this and I was wondering "Didn't he already do this movie?" Then I hovered over it on my Xbox and the first thing I see on the preview is the abominable snowman. 🖕🤬🖕And on top of that, it was projected on my wall, taking up most of the space.

I was thinking, "didn't I just see this?" Also, while I am here. I recommend the original Godzilla n the un-Americanized format. Watched that last night, and it's great. (free on YT currently) I didn't know that existed until watching your vid, and wondering where Burr was. Thanks for this series!

I appreciate you bringing up that Raymond Burr fought to keep Godzilla Returns ( 85 ) from being made into a parody. I've never been his biggest fan, but he's got my respect for realizing and appreciating the importance of the original Godzilla. It really does put his role in the original localization in a much better light. I'm just starting out watching your content and I'm very much enjoying it. Thank you for all the hard work and diligence.

Haruo Nakajima the original Godzilla actor also gave praise to Burr. Nakajima wasn't always happy playing Godzilla. The suit being very heavy and getting very hot but Burr appearing on set and cheering him on was a bright spot for him. Something that left an lasting impact on him up to his death.

The end of this movie always made me cry as a child, Godzilla was my hero and to see him fall into the Volcano screaming in fear was so upsetting. Raymond Burrs speech along with the Prime Minister almost crying sums up the message of this film and the original perfectly. Definitely giving this one a watch again soon

I got to see this as a kid during it's original American theatrical release. As a huge G fan who had watched them only on TV up until that point, seeing a brand new Godzilla film in the theater really was one of those life-long memorable events. And I absolutely cried at the end when he falls into the volcano and screams that horrible, pained scream. my parents were legitimately surprised by my strong emotional reaction, and, against character, didn't chide me for it or anything. It's far from the best G film, but it holds a special place in my heart.

God bless Mr. Burr for saving the dignity of the US production! (I had no idea he wrote that speech!) An area the US version improved upon: the soundtrack. The end credits gave Big-G a serious, sombre orchestral score, much more befitting him than the ghastly pop-song the Japanese inexplicably used.

Glad to watch this video again. Return of Godzilla (in it's Americanized version) was the first Godzilla film I ever saw, not counting the 1998 movie anyway, my local video store had the VHS and I rented it so often that I nearly wore it out so they just let me keep it. Still one of my favorites in the franchise, I remember being absolutely enthralled with it & it's probably largely responsible for sending me down the rabbit hole of Kaiju movies.

Your video reminded me of something in my life regarding this movie. Back in the mid-90's, I was a government contractor for BPS and did telecommunication work for the US Air Force and my team was assigned to work with the Russian Govt and the US Air Force in setting up new communications networks in the field to help the Russians track and locate stolen radiactive materials taken from mostly abandoned mobile nuclear missle launchers. Anyway, we had to work on Russian soil for 2-years and I had taken several movies with me, as well as my VCR to help pass the time. One time, we watched Godzilla 1985 in a lounge (sort of a large break room). I had seen both the Japanese version and the US version and I love the US Version more. I asked them point blank..."If Godzilla appeared in Japanese territory (on land or in the sea), would Russia launch a nuclear attack on the monster if they believed it to be a geniuine threat?". Their response was unanimous..."Yes!!!" One of the Commanding officers I had to liason with made the point..."If such a creature were real and posed a real threat then "Yes". We would do a pre-emptive attack, probably nuclear, while the monster was preferably not on Russian soil." He also said that once the monster had been identified, the Russian military would have deployed their subs and ships, as well as planes to track the monster and formulate attack plans. So when you see the portrayal of the Russians in "Godzilla 1985" its probably more on the nose that most would think. BTWwhen my team and I were in Russia, it was sometimes awesome (for the parties) but then nerve racking because we were watched and monitored by (2) teams (a day team and a night team) and we were on a curfew of 9pm when we first went there. One day, one of Russian liasons told me that they (The Russian Security forces, formerly the KGB) thought I was the most boring American they had ever surveilled because I never drank, I never smoked, and never had a Russian woman/lover. lol. I joked with them that I was secretly a CIA agent and that I had photographic memory. That way when I would see their maps (for where we had to run copper to trench for our communications work) I could draw those maps for the CIA later. It was just a joke. Except they didn't take it that way. One day, I was detained and questioned one and off for four hours and was told to "Keep those sort of jokes to myself." LOL. Anyway, love your videos!

Godzilla was the first thing I was ever a 'fan' of when I was a kid. Like 5 years old, planting my narrow little ass in front of the TV - on the floor as close as I could get without my mother yelling at me about ruining my eyes...to watch all the Toho classics. I got to see Rodan, Gamera movies, Ultraman movies, weird giant cavemen (a blue one vs a yellow one, I think?) fighting movies...all kinds of weird, awesome Kaiju films. But Godzilla was by far my favorite, and they showed more Godzilla movies than any of the others. Gamera came in second, probably. Two movies every Saturday, back to back. Sunday was karate movies, sadly. I became obsessed with Godzilla, and I'll be 54 in a month...and I'm still obsessed.

Remember seeing a video with an interview with Raymond Burr and how he said he’s been a fan of Godzilla and got into how he respected the meaning of what Godzilla was and to be taken serious. Nature has a way sometimes of reminding man of just how small he is. She occasionally throws up the terrible offspring of our pride and carelessness to remind us of how puny we really are in the face of a tornado, an earthquake or a Godzilla. The reckless ambitions of man are often dwarfed by their dangerous consequences. For now, Godzilla-that strangely innocent and tragic monster-has gone to earth. Whether he returns or not or is never again seen by human eyes, the things he has taught us remain.

happy 40th anniversary the return of godzilla!!!(love bandai's godzilla line up being almost the entire series, liked hanna barbera's cartoons though even before i was as huge into the big g's lore didn't like it's version, cool there was a phone call to "talk with godzilla" & have respect for raymon burr wanting godzilla to be given respect to his roots with his self-made admirable speech at the end like a sequel to it's own version.:3) love while it had the issue the millenium series had of not explaining how 54 godzilla survived his fate(that is why i don't find vs. king ghidorah that confusing as there'd have to be 2 godzillasaurus's that were made even before it) they made godzilla scary again(his face during his roar looks so enraged and the deaths throughout)with the destruction he causes in it's beautiful at night scenes while showing deep down he's an animal(that the ending did a great job with how terrified he sounds falling into the volcano/for the most part is just minding his own business wandering till he picks a fight with the super x) that the heisei era built up on(don't mind it as even in showa they showed he's an animal/like it brings up for as silly as it is showing the danger of godzilla that even his lice are kaiju facehugger's) ,that cyborg godzilla is terrifying, like the political themes of how the other countries would react to godzilla with the prime minister(wish we saw him in future films seeing him interact with miki) silencing them when bringing up if it happened to them/the soviet ship captain trying to stop the launch and the start of my favorite era of godzilla alongside reiwa.

Return of Godzilla is great. It's epic, loud and imposing. A beautiful return to form for the King of the monsters. Though his design would change for the rest of his Heisei run, it's interesting to see some design similarities like the row of scales on his head to his back then getting refined to what I would consider the quintessential Godzilla design. Most modern audiences would recognize Legendary's as The Godzilla. But I always keep coming back to the Heisei being the most recognizable. 🖤🦖💜

I saw this on TV when I was four or five years old. Not going to lie, I ugly cried at the end. That music and that speech just broke me. Up through high school I would cry at the end of that movie. I am infinitely grateful for Raymond Burr for not allowing this movie to become a parody of itself. But the next day or the day after that I saw Godzilla vs The Cosmic Monster (Mecha Godzilla) and was convinced Godzilla had simply burrowed from the volcano to inexplicably pop out of a warehouse to face off against his double. At that age the difference in film quality didn't register anyway. But I also had that same small Godzilla toy and always laser focused on it whenever I watched Rosanne with my parents. I still have my little plastic Godzilla somewhere in my house too. It was a treasured item right up to adulthood, partly because it was Godzilla and partly just because I had it for so long. And the one comedy line that I still remember from the 1985 version was that younger guy beside the General just recommending they deal with Godzilla with "Maybe a really big horse tranquilizer?"

This was my first Godzilla movie. I saw it as a very young child, maybe 4 or 5 years old, as my dad was watching it. I think he rented it, as it was the late 80s and I don't think it would have aired on TV that soon - also I don't remember there being any commercials. Back then movies often took forever to make it to TV. I remember the movie blew my mind, and for whatever reason I was a huge fan of the super-x, which made frequent cameos in my pretend games for many years after. While I didn't become a Goji superfan and seek out all the movies or anything like that, I was an instant, if casual, fan after watching this movie, which I still have tons of nostalgia for, and I would catch a few other Godzilla movies over the years when they would do Saturday marathons and the like.

I really really really really wish Toho would allow the distribution of the 1985 cut with Raymond Burr. I found a VHS copy at a thrift store but when I tried to transfer it to a DVD it unraveled and broke. I was crushed. But even if it had worked, it would be a pan & scan version with low quality. It would be a fantasy-come-true to see a good Blu-Ray copy.

The original Japanese version actually made it clear it was a different Godzilla the first, when in Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (spoilers) the main characters realize the one they went back in time to move was a different Godzilla than the one that appeared in 1954, with this one being the one that appeared in 1984, and in ever subsequent film until the end of the Heisei series.

I honestly don't mind not getting an explanation of how that could be the same creature that decimated Japan in the 1950s. I kind of like filling in those gaps myself. Shows that even the experts didn't know, but when dealing with a monster like Godzilla, you don't have a lot of time to ponder. I'd like to think that if even a single cell of the creature survived, he could regenerate. Being that there was a nearly 30 year gap between film could have been the time needed for him to heal fully. That just my take. Awesomely cool video and many thanks for sharing this look into Godzilla's triumphant return.

I still don't really understand why they couldn't or wouldn't call him "Steve Martin." So what if there is an actor with the same name? The character was named Steve Martin a long time ago. It would make sense if they just called him "Mr. Martin" a couple of times in the movie and left it at that. But it always sounds like they purposely went out of their way to not call him Steve.

My favorite about Godzilla was the look of his eyes & brow. I also love his roar, so unique, I have it as my text notification on my phone. I first used it as my ex-wife's ring tone. She finally stopped calling me. Long live the King!

In my opinion, Godzilla Returns is how you do a proper reboot. The first Legendary Godzilla movie should have just focused on the Big Man, and saved the monster battles for the sequel.

My dude, you should have mentioned how amazing the theme for Super X was and how pounchy the rockets and the particle beams it fired sounded

I was impressed with this 80s G film, ToHo, should bring him back in another G film time travel story line, or in the Monsterverse

Did I miss some videos or something because we missed a few key moments in the Kaiju King's story such as his first encounter with his evil robotic twin and Gigans first appearance.. I am just wondering if it was copy righting or just not done yet also I love your content man I'm happy that the Kaiju Community is still breathing

Great review this is my favorite Godzilla movie. I really wanna see the American edit now. Did you take out the talk of the awkward romance that was going on or was that a different review I saw?

This was the first Godzilla movie that really grabbed me. The first movie I saw was Godzilla Vs Hedorah which I saw at about the age of 12 in the early hours of the morning but I was both young and half asleep. When I saw this at the video store I grabbed it and it made me the fan I am today this movie ticked all the boxes but sadly here in Australia getting hold of a Godzilla movie required pacts with dark powers so it wasn't till years later that I watched all the movies

I believe what hurt the film in the US was Leonard Maltin reviewed it, and it was clear he hadn't watched it.

I believe Roger Ebert gave it a thumbs up 👍 and enjoyed it quite a bit. If you see the start of Siskel and Ebert you’ll see the Godzilla 85 poster in the opening scene with Roger Ebert typing away.

Very good video. One point, especially, that I would agree with is that Raymond Burr's character seem to have no real purpose in the movie.

I hate to admit this, but the Godzilla 85' scene with the Shokkirasu is edited a lot better. It's decently scary. The original scene seems to go on too long. The score is still my favorite of all the Godzilla scores, extremely eerie and haunting. Even to this day gives me a sense of dread. And finally, Raymond Burr's monologue at the end will always make me tear up! Still love the original the most of the two though. 😁 Absolutely love your videos! Keep up the excellent work!!

Honestly, the 1985 version of Return Of Godzilla isn’t half bad. It’s one of the few “Americanizations” that in places elevated the film. The original ‘84 film was great, but the ‘85 added Raymond Burr and the roar when Godzilla falls in the volcano which just makes the ending so much more satisfying. With that said, the ‘85 film definitely reeks of a Roger Corman production which deflates drama of the story; but it’s still worth watching if you ask me. But the ‘84 will always be better than the ‘85 in terms of overall quality.
