**Corrections** 12:04 - Regrettably, I stated this as a matter of fact despite not seeing any hard evidence that this was the intent. I've come to see this element of the movie to be more ambiguous. I think it can go either way as to whether Godzilla is real in Ichiro's universe or just a fictional monster like in our universe. Additionally, the reasoning I used based around the toy doesn’t carry much weight, I realized that when I got to the next movie lol. So, though I think Godzilla being fictional in this movie's universe works better, I can't say for certain that was the intent here.

As a child (not a teen, but as a child) this was my favorite movie, and not for a good reason. I was constantly bullied at school, not just picked on, but beat up. My mental/emotional escape route was all things nerdy. So not only this movie an escape, I could really relate to that little kid. As an adult, a few years ago, I watched this, and... yeah. It's pretty stupid. I only ever saw the English version.

Oh hell yeah, new Godzilla history video. Honestly, there's a part of me that likes this movie, or at least understands and appreciates the concept behind it. It was certainly executed poorly, but there's a decent premise hidden within. I think with a larger budget and maybe some more time given to the writing it could have been a really interesting entry into the Godzilla canon, unfortunately that wasn't the case though and I am pretty comfortable calling it the weakest of the showa series, it's probably the only movie in the franchise I actually skip if I marathon them.

I know I'm late to this video, but your channel is awesome. Growing up in NY as a kid while also being a NY Jets fan/Godzilla fan, this channel has been great entertainment for a number of reasons. Even the "watching a Godzilla film while sick" was something I could relate to (although mine was Ghidorah, The Three Headed Monster). It's nice to know I wasn't the only fan of Godzilla growing up in the 90's. 😂

I remember as a kid the Godzilla Marathon played on TBS in 1988 or so with one of the Ninja Turtles hosting all the ad breaks. It started with King of the Monsters and went all the way through to ‘85 (skipping Raids Again, Son of Godzilla, and Destroy all Monsters - all of which I didn’t know existed until years later). I pretty much sat like a plant ALL DAY through the movies as it felt like participating in a big event. The ONE exception was this movie (during which I took a break), which I had seen clips of earlier and completely hated it. Even as an 8-year-old I thought it was stupid… too many kids and too much stock footage.

Thanks for your balanced and especially culturally relevant Japanese perspective in this review. Except for 1963's King Kong vs. Godzilla, I always feel like Toho just makes films for their domestic audience, period, and it sometimes left Western audiences scratching their heads, with no reference! Until Shin Godzilla, my favorite film was always Godzilla vs. Hedorah, but my second was always All Monsters Attack / Godzilla's Revenge, which I saw on TV way before cable or VCRs! You had to wait for it to come around again in 10 or 12 months! I just naturally like that earthy, late-60's / early '70's , period, where there was a lot of radical change happening (student riots in Japan were super violent and INSANE! Google this; it's no joke!). But All Monsters Attack, by comparison, is quiet and introspective. I don't care for the ending; that Ichiro wins by beating up the bully (does that often work in real life?) and honking the painter's horn. Yet, I think Ichiro is the best kid character in the series for being so imaginative and self-determined at the same time. There is one beautiful matte painting; the factory that he sneaks into has a human face (!), and the lighting at dusk is theatrically red and looks lovely. Earlier we see kids going to, or coming from, school, walking through dangerous traffic, etc. I'm sure they had 2 weeks to make this film but the results are truly well done. And I think the scary lightning monster Gabara, who was certainly based in Yokai lore, but is more of a classic Kaiju in the film, is an awesome foe! I'm a lifelong fan. I don't think Godzilla is best served by a montage with a death-metal soundtrack on YT, made by Western adults. I love the darker Japanese movies; 1954, Shin Godzilla, Hedorah, GMK, etc. Yet, I don't care about any of the over-long and self-serious '90's Heisei films. All Monsters Attack is cheap but it has a lot of heart! It wasn't made for bitchy adults, it was made for kids, who would've been too young to recognize stock footage! It's a wild, yet personal (for Ichiro), ride, and I still love it as such!

The dub never bothered me because in 1976 it was the only way to watch it and it was a Godzilla movie so I was watching it. I couldn't always see everyone of those films because they weren't always on TV. I didn't mind "Godzilla's greatest hits" of stock footage... These days with every format everywhere we can see all the errors and mistakes... This movie is still 100xs better than Megalon... Really well researched video that is very fair to this scorned movie. After your explanation of this movie it sounds really not that bad, but I think why it is hated is because it is a "Godzilla" movie, which carries a certain weight of expectation to it. The film probably would have been a lot better if it had it's own lead monster, with maybe Godzilla cameoing briefly, but if it did that then we wouldn't be talking about it 50 years later.

It’s good to see a new Godzilla history on probably on the worst Godzilla in the Showa era, but I will give respect to filmmakers and Ishiro Hando because they have to work on a very small budget and cut corners for this film and I found it very interesting that Ishiro Hando wanted to have an important message for this film to kids.
@junodonatus4906
@junodonatus4906 4 ай бұрын
Did it resonate with kids? Pretty much yes. The reason is that it portrayed us and we related to the kid in the film on so many levels. Being a latchkey kid, growing up and playing in an industrial neighborhood (that gadget he finds would have been cool to us), being alone while his parents worked, his use of his imagination in contacting Monster Island (in addition to his Godzilla toy...I had the Shogun Warriors one), him being bullied, and him imagining that one of the monsters is his friend. This was one of my favorites growing up because it put me in the film series I loved so much.

I watched the Japanese version and felt no real feelings towards this. Yeah, it's very close to the bottom for Godzilla movies for me, but it didn't annoy me or anything. I think the 70 minute runtime really helped that. The scene with Ichiro's mom was powerful and made the watch worth it overall. Interestingly, I didn't view Monster Island as fictional in this. Clearly Ichiro's dreams are fictional, but he talks about the monsters a lot and no one really questions what he's talking about (except when he mentions Gabara to the toymaker, which would make sense as he literally dreamt that monster up). The Godzilla toy doesn't really reinforce that it's all fiction, as even in the very next movie, Godzilla vs Hedorah, we see a boy playing with a Godzilla toy, and Godzilla clearly exists in-universe there. I interpret All Monsters Attack as taking place in the Showa universe, and Ichiro's dreams are fueled by the things he has seen on the news and whatnot about Godzilla and the other monsters.
@BigActionBill
@BigActionBill Жыл бұрын
Yeah the toy reasoning doesn’t work as you point out, I realized that when I did the next video lol. But I still believe Godzilla only exists within film in All Monsters Attack. I’ve always seen it as Ichiro being a fan of the movies like we are and in the dreams he’s seeing Godzilla as he appears in all the prior movies. But to be honest I don’t see any hard evidence my interpretation was the intent, so I may need to issue a correction as I think I state rather matter of factly that this movie exists outside the Showa universe, but I don’t cite a Toho source on that.
@gasparguruoftime5475
@gasparguruoftime5475 Жыл бұрын
@@BigActionBill Yeah I guess it’s really up to the viewer. It could just as easily be like you say that he loves the movies the same as we do, and like you point out, that gives the writers almost an excuse for their reuse of footage lol; not a very good excuse, but an excuse nonetheless. Thankfully continuity doesn’t really matter much in the Showa era, but hey, it’s still fun to talk about since the continuity does technically exist. They put more thought into it than I anticipated when I first decided to watch them all in order.

I can go my entire life without seeing it ever again. Though it's not the godzilla movie I hate the most, which is 2014. I mostly just feel bad for it, since ishiro Honda had the misfortune of directing it.

I still don't like this as a Godzilla movie, but I now have a new appreciation for what they were trying to do with it.

Even as a child I could not stand this one or son of Godzilla I would watch him but I would start making my own stories that go with it because they were just Godzilla movies that's the only reason I'd watch

The ending with the mother was a bit depressing. On my first viewing I was too focused on what the heck I just watched. Thanks to your video, the plot makes much more sense, and the ending hit hard for me.

So legit went back and watched this recently, and not gonna lie, it's not great but it's not terrible. I think Honda really drives the commentary of Japanese society and their overworking tendencies. The scene where the boys mother cries as she knows he has grown up too fast because of her work ethic. It hits in a way. And I definitely think it's not as bad as I used to think

All things considered, there's a strangely high number of Catholics involved in the Godzilla franchise. Especially when one realizes just how few Christians (nevermind just Catholics) there are in Japan.

@@dubuyajay9964 family stationed in Saitama army base (now closed). I have returned to japan after following my parents military foot steps. I flew and saw the world in 27yrs of aviation military service, now I fly for an airline out of Japan. It’s simple have a life plan, also understand the culture you are in. Many people travel to places and are enamored, they Later live in and to be dismayed (mostly the internet generation). Japan is more than anime and maid cafés, Pop culture is not culture. Come here and experience the existence, For me I love it it’s paradise every day. It is not the same for everyone.
