Thanks Kenneth, there are more 35mm cameras in young peoples hands than ever before. Too bad the price of film is getting out of reach for many of them, at least in my area (LA). Respect to you and your students. I had a moment over the holidays to explain aperture priority and depth of field to a young’n and realized how rusty my teaching skills were. HP5 or Arista 400 is affordable if you photograph only the things you want photographs of and process it yourself. Too many film photographers seem to want to go out and shoot a roll without a strong idea of what they're going to photograph. And then are disappointed by photos of tree trunks and fireplugs. Right? The numbers we know so well, to explain them clearly isn't always simple.

No, you're still choosing film and composing with a viewfinder and processing your film. Far from a BP!

The way you describe it, a phone is like an advanced form of a Polaroid/instant camera. Which, when you put it that way, does not sound as awful? Polaroid- one or two buttons, does everything for you, result will only be viewed at a small size, does not require any understanding of aperture, ISO or shutter speed. Sounds pretty much like a phone camera to me. I guess what I'm trying to say is, phones are not some totally new approach to photography that came from nowhere, nor are they a reboot of a 100 year old camera- people have been using Brownies, to Polaroids to simple point and shoot digital cameras basically since the start of photography. People like us who use gear that requires thinking obviously can get better results when we understand how to extract the optimum or best image with a complex tool. But it should not come as a shock that 90% or more of the population has no knowledge of aperture, shutter speed or ISO, and it's been that way for ages. Ok, minus knowing to buy say 400 ISO or 800 ISO film to buy back in the day.

Those are good points. But the Polaroid at least had a couple of exposure controls even if it was just a brighter or darker setting. (The phone does, but most people I know don't know how to use it.) Plus a way to add a flash, and choose film type. There were some considerations made before photographing. Thanks!

You revealed my thoughts when canon came out with their system back in the 1980s. just press a button and there you go. everyone is an uneducated photographer
