One year, I tried the slightly dampened vermiculite method and even though I’ll checked and misted them throughout winter, so many dried out. Then I tried storing them dirty by leaving the soil on them and put them in a cardboard box…it worked great. It kept the tubers insulated from drying out too much and I had no mold or disease issues. Last year is the first year I didn’t save any tubers…just left them in the ground and we’ll see what happens. For reference, I’m in zone 7b/southern NJ

Powdered cinnamon is a natural fungicide. You can try to coat the dahlias with the cinnamon powder and see if it help the tubers with just a little bit of mold.

Great video Roxana. I just don't have the patience for dahlias. I'm glad it looked like you got quite a few that made it. Good luck!

I’m new to dahlias last year. Have seed started dahlias. We also designed an above ground root cellar that managed to stay 38-43 degrees. I had a lot of geraniums, cannas, dahlias, glads and begonias. The geraniums had some mold and many didn’t make it. The last I seen the bulbs they were all firm. The begonias I have no idea if they are to be corms or root ball, but I’m sure they are toast. We need another vent in root cellar to get better cross flow because the humidity is too high. The dahlias were an experiment and would have been bummed if I had paid big money for the. I may not continue with them as I don’t have or even want to pot them up, they will go direct to garden. I don’t wash soil off of bulbs as it helps protect them. As a kid we never washed the canna bulbs and we had barrels of them. We put them in large cardboard tubes that dad got from work and kept in cool basement. Looks like you will have quite a few and maybe try something different next year.

Yeah, I still got a lot of good tubers but such a bummer I loathe a bunch. I already ordered 4 more varieties so hopefully next year they do better

Gardening is so weird. You can do things the exact same way for years and then all of a sudden it doesn’t work anymore. Sorry some your tubers went bad. Glad you were able to salvage some. I’m sure they’ll be beautiful as usual.

I'm so glad you had plenty that made it!! The ones that did look really good! 😊 I saved mine in their huge clumps in vermiculite in a cardboard box. They did fine, mostly, but really difficult to separate this spring. I ended up potting about 3 smaller clumps of each and hoped for the best (since I kind of mangled them). Checked today and I am seeing some sprouts!! Yay! Even if I just get one of each I'm happy 😍

You can clean off the mold with some hydrogen peroxide. I’m also in your growing zone and it’s difficult to keep them healthy with all the up and down weather. I stored mine in my garage this year, dirty, and was only able to save about 25%. some tubers simply don’t store well unless you have the walk in fridge with the humidity control 😑

I have had the most success overwintering dahlia tubers by using a method similar to the one the american dahlia society uses. Using plastic film to wrap the individual tubers in. I do not dust them with a fungicide before wrapping. I do not want to expose myself to the chemical. Then i put all of the wrappped tubers innto a styfoam cooler and put them into the coolest part of my basement. Have about 75% sucess rate this way.

Oh NOOO. I am so sorry some of your tubers were bad. It looks like you salvaged a good amount though. Now Im afraid to check mine:). I keep mine in my garage in a cardboard box with the cover on part way. Maybe next year you can leave them in your garage/shed with a lot of peat or something so they don't freeze? IDK. Its just so much work to have them mold:(

I’m sorry for your loss. I stored mine in a styrofoam container, made holes in it, put a jug of water in the container(no lid), then added tubers in vermiculite. They seem to have made it last I checked. The container stayed in a unseated garage all winter. Just an idea.

The main reason why dahlia tubers don't overwinter outdoors is because they're in heavy wet soil. If you can find a spot where your tulips tend to come back fairly well, that's also a good location for dahlias. In zone 7A I don't dig them up at all.

I was going to pull out my annual dahlias today to make room for other plants but it's covered with tubers, I've never seen this. Should I dig them/ divide and replant?

I don’t think they will come back here, some tulips even have a hard time perennializing here.

@@lovelight9164 You don't have to divide them every year. Maybe every five years or when the blooming starts to slow down

I randomly found Arabian Night at Aldi yesterday. And the tubers look shockingly nice. I'm still on the fence about wintering them over. But of course, I am growing them from seed and tuber, because I love them. Same love/hate here.

So sorry many of your tubers didn’t make it. I don't have a coolndry spot either. I clean and dry my tubers without dividing and layer with vermiculite in a big cardboard box. I did check them once and spritzed a little water on top. I usually have about a 60 to 70 percent success rate which I'm totally happy with. It's sad when a favorite doesn't make it.

First time viewer of your channel! Thank you for the real-life dahlia video! I'm glad I'm not alone with dahlia tuber storage flops 😅 Last summer was my first time growing dahlias. I live in high desert 6b (very dry) and since I have a detached garage, no basement and uninsulated shed I stored mine in a cardboard box with vermiculite in the refrigerator. Sadly 50% of mine dried out and when I tried starting those they molded in the soil 😭This fall I'll try a combination of methods in the refrigerator: plastic containers with small vents holes and/or wrapping them in plastic wrap in the crisper drawer. 💗

I tried four methods for storing tubers this year knowing i would probably lose some. I tried vermiculite, wrapping in plastic wrap, in brown paper bags, and in newspaper. The only one that worked was vermiculite. I also used to be able to get burpee potting mix and vermiculite at menards but ours quit carrying them.

I’ve given up. By the time I dig them up it’s freezing and I’ve lost steam. I store clumped in dirt but the last two years I’ve had 40% success as most shrivel. My own fault but I’m so tired. This year I’m scaling back and focusing on more annuals like zinnia

Such a bummer! Dalhia’s are so finicky. I think if you added some venting holes you would have 100% success of overwintering them. If you worry about light in your space and just put a burlap over them. Even though you disappointed, it looks like you will have a beautiful show of flowers in the summer. I think you are just being a bit hard on yourself….
