If only I knew what I was talking about! I think we slapped this box together in like a couple hours. This was Itchy’s gear, and one of the problems we had wiring them up was the terminals were (mislabeled)? One pair was pushing into each other instead of push/pull. Also, Itchy decided we could “send it” once the cap blew off. That’s the high pitched rattle you hear. There were also sparks at one point. However, my 145 amp alternator was not enough to even get these 8’s going, much less blow them. It’s just an old farm truck with some basic tunes in it.

It only makes it more space efficient. It basically cuts VAS in half yet it still has the same cone area moving air so per watt it's less efficient.

Should have ran the 4 channel amp in bridged 2 channel mode and wired the subs outside the box out of phase. This wiring creates the Push | Pull isobaric requires. I ran 4 - 10” Soundstreams in an Isobaric box back the 90’s. 1993 Extended Cab Toyota Pick-up. Sounded decent.

Only way to ensure proper phase is to use one channel per iso pair but with a 4-channel not possible with two pairs unless you bridged. To make things worse you can see random channels dropping out at times in this case.

Great video, so enjoyable, thank you.
@notchbak2 жыл бұрын
I always thought isobaric was generally done to reduce the needed air volume needed by half... (Ie: 12 inch needs 2 cube, but isobarically mounted the volume only needed to be 1 cube for the pair?)
@less54062 жыл бұрын
It is. Isobaric mounting cuts the Vas in half. It also cuts the efficiency by 3 or 6 db...I don't remember which.
@proffessasvids2 жыл бұрын
Yes this cab is far far far too big tbh. I only ever use iso if I don't have the volume needed for a given driver size..... and don't mind wasting another driver to do it. We did it a fair amount back in the day, using multiples of cheap woofers. That was before I could afford proper drivers. Nowadays these super strong low qts drivers will run in cabs smaller than the cardboard ones they were shipped in. I remember running 18"s in 7-8 cube vented back in the day. Now I'm building 4.5-5 rear chambers for modern neo and large format ferrite 18"s. Xx
@josmith21310 ай бұрын
Yes, it's not really a factor with today's woofers as they have huge motors and power handling. In the 90s a 12" really needed like 3-4 cubes in a ported to get low, also most woofers were like 100-200w rms on average unless you dropped a boat load of cash on a 'high power' woofer that would handle like 500w rms. So with isobaric you could have a decent sized box and the power handling of 4 woofers, but it had the cone area of 2 12s.

Wow!! Outside of close family, I’ve never heard of Scurry Texas! That hole in the wall is just a few miles from my dad’s house! I love me some 8” subs!! Back in the day I played around with isobaric loading of subs before I knew what I was doing. I had a pair of Radio Shack 6 1/2” mid bass drivers. Unbeknownst to me, the box I built was a ported isobaric box where the second sub was behind the first sub and mounted to a panel inside the box. The chamber in between the two subs was sealed, and dual 2” ports ran from the front panel, through the sealed portion, and into the back chamber. The ports were flush with the front panel and middle panel, if that makes sense. For a cheap setup, and not knowing what I was doing, it sounded pretty good and was around 1.5 cubic foot in total air space. This was in 1992!! Oh how little did I know back then!!

There was this one SPL Mitsubishi eclipse build that was owned by a marine on base way back in 2005. It was from what I recall, a Bandpass horn loaded enclosure with isobaric woofer configuration. Why? All he had at the time was a stock 130 Amp Alternator. The only mod being the overdrive pulley. It took up the entire back seat and most of the hatchback. I don't think he needed lowering springs on the back. But he did have bump stops. what was CRAY-ZEE!? I think he was running with less than 600 Watts of power for the 8 subwoofers in that box. I never got a chance to hear it in person. Just when it drove by. What was amazing about it is that it was all with relatively easy to get to alpine parts. Nothing to far out there. Sad part is? I don't think he ever came back to pick up his ride from base, so it got towed away after sitting for a few years in the parking lot. So many great builds, and I bet you they are just either sitting in a junkyard someplace? Or have been lost to time or crushed overtime.

Stronger the magnet, its reactance to admit AC current. To increase the power you need to increase the AC voltage. To destroy it, just apply 12v DC to it. With NEO magnets the speaker becomes powerful with efficient means and needs little power to be loud.

Just wanted to weigh in bu in this situation it would be best to run all the subs off the same output channel. This way the power is being evenly distributed between all the subs. In this kind of configuration the exact amount of power and stuff matters as each sub is interacting with the other in more ways than just being in the same air chamber thus you don't want any of them under performing. WHile it woudl be cool to have each sub wired up to it's own output channel I would personally just run this off a monoblock.

Yeah isobaric is two speakers acting as one. There's several set ups, but basically it's a sub completely in a box within its own chamber and a sealed section between, then and the second speakers either facing cone to magnet or cone to cone. The purpose is to get same spl from a smaller box. Works really well just a little too complicated for most setups. Yeah I knew the basics but was checking out the different ways on wiki. Very cool setups, people been doing this for a long time. I even think kicker makes a specific iso sub.. Yeah don't you have one Big D?

A few things... You need an IR gun with an emissivity adjustment. When scanning metal objects, the emissivity needs to be adjusted in order to read the actual temperature. That said, with the ability to see the actual windings, a true tale sign of heating up before smelling the varnish burning is the bright orange copper color darkens slightly. Also, you can touch it with a finger with no signal if you dare! The coils were big enough to thermally dissipate whatever power they were receiving with ease. You did mention the electrical system wasn't ideal as well so I suspect you were voltage limited (in the amp's output rails). 1kW sustained (per motor) should be enough to get them quite hot and smelly. Edgewound VCs do pretty well and the 4" size is pretty standard in pro audio where we've been able to run 600W continuous through one for over 24 hours (a pink noise signal!)... Neo motors have the benefit of very high BL (motor force) for given weight. Big advantage with touring designs as neo vs. ceramic is HUGE in large cabinets with four 21" drivers, for example. That Zapco amp is beautiful. Some relate them to the Krell of car audio! Definitely a SQ amp there, great for full range. Isobarik when properly implemented produces a very tight, controlled bass. For SQ not efficiency. It will handle a LOT of power especially when using drivers that don't have much xmax. But it requires a lot of tuning to get right otherwise the drivers can get out of control real fast and if they're not built sturdily bad things will happen. Nobody wants to hear the equivalent of a 6 horsepower jackhammer behind their seat! :-P
