💖 In this “Valentine’s Day” special video, we’ll dig deeper into the legendary love story of Nakhoda Ragam (Sultan Bolkiah, 5th Sultan of Brunei) and Puteri Laila Menchanai (Princess of Sulu). We’ll learn more about the tale of their romantic but tragic love story that was passed down in Brunei’s traditional songs and theater. We will also look at what actually happened according to history and how their epic royal wedding left a lasting impact in the history of Southeast Asia. We’ll also get to know some of their living descendants today! (you’d be surprised! 😉)
About Kirby:
Kirby Pábalan-Táyag Aráullo is a renowned Filipino Culture Bearer and currently the National Coordinator for Culture and Heritage for NAFCON (National Alliance for Filipino Concerns). He is a Dátû and Lakan by blood, a direct descendant of the last indigenous Paramount Kings of Luzon (of both Lakandúlâ of Tondo and Rája Matandá of Maynílâ), and of the anti-colonial revolutionary Katipuneros who fought for the liberation of the Philippines from colonialism. Kirby's upbringing exposed him to the contradicting worlds of traditional politics and grassroots activism.
With a keen interest in varying fields (such as history, culture, government, and human rights) and a strong commitment to serve the community, Kirby studied in some of the world’s most prestigious universities, such as Harvard, UC Davis, and Université catholique de Louvain. Kirby is also the Co-Founder of the Bulosan Center for Filipino Studies at the University of California, Davis, and author of the book “Black Lives & Brown Freedom: Untold Histories of War, Solidarity, & Genocide.” He is a visiting professor at various colleges in the Philippines and a research fellow with Sínúpan Singsing, an institute for indigenous advocacy and the study of Kapampángan language, history, and culture.
Dátû Kirby is an educator who is well-rooted in his culture and passionate about his heritage; he strives to decolonize Philippine history and democratize Ethnic Studies through knowledge and play.

It is such a pity that our history education only centers on Colonial to Post colonial era. Don't get me wrong Rizal's life is worth telling. However, by doing these we only cement the idea that Filipinos became Filipinos because of our european colonizers. Nakakalungkot lang na as a moro na we have this vast history even before our colonization pero di alam ng mga Pilipino. Lahat tayo manghang mangha sa mga Monarkiya ng mga ibang bansa pero di natin alam na meron tayong ganito sa kasaysayan natin. Yun lang siguro kulang natin para tuluyan natin ma-atim ang tunay na kalayaan.

I've been to several of his lectures when he is in the Philippines, I don't think he's lying or fooling people. I also have never heard him call himself Datu of whatever. Except for maybe the bio where it states na he is Datu and Lakan by blood which I think is okay since other legit historians and community leaders in Pampanga recognize his lineage naman. In fact, if you visit Pampanga and talk to the older clans, they still recognize which clans are descendants of the Rajahs and the Lakans of Luzon. It is also very well documented in the archives. If you look at his full name alone na nasa bio naman niya, he is a Tayag, one of the clans na officially and legitimately recognized na descendants ng mga Royal families ng Tondo at Pampanga. Its included sa official list ng mga Spanish documents. Maraming ding research tungkol sa mga angkan na yan mula sa mga batikang scholars. Well documented kasi during the Spanish Era.
