Ambient music:
As a genre, ambient focuses on creating a mood or atmosphere through synthesizers and timbral qualities. It often lacks the presence of any net composition, beat, or structured melody. Due to its relatively open style, ambient music often takes influences from many other genres, ranging from house, dub, industrial and new age, amongst several others. Since it is a relatively ambiguous term, ambient has no distinct characteristics, and its style can vary a great deal. In essence, it is a term to describe any form of electronic music which puts an emphasis on tone and atmosphere over traditional musical structure or rhythm. Ambient music is often highly conceptual and experimental in style, while it is said to evoke an "atmospheric", "visual" or "unobtrusive" quality.
Space music:
Space music, also called spacemusic, is an umbrella term, synonymous with a segment of New Age Music and Ambient Music. It has also been associated with preceding styles of relaxing music such as lounge music, easy-listening, and elevator music... space music can evoke a "continuum of spatial imagery and emotion,"which can be beneficial for introspection, and for developing, through a practice of deep listening, an awareness of the spatiality of sound phenomenon. This type of psychonautic listening can produce a subtle trance-like state in certain individuals which can in turn lead to sensations of flying, floating, cruising, gliding, or hovering... space music is used by some individuals for both background enhancement and foreground listening, often with headphones, to enable states of relaxation, contemplation, inspiration, and generally peaceful expansive moods; it may promote health through relaxation, atmospherics for bodywork therapies, and effectiveness of meditation. Space music appears in many film soundtracks and is commonly played in planetariums.

@@themossinator same here, this isn't just one of the best Q demos on You tube, it's THE best one I've heard. It's totally mind blowing! I simply haven't been able to get sounds like this out of it either. Most of the presets have this weird kind of klannng sound quality which I'm not keen on. In fact I was going to sell it to get an Access Virus instead but if I can work out how to get it to sound like this maybe I'll keep it!

+synth4ever Hi, I don't why but today I remembered this video and listened to it again and it was simply mesmerizing. I'd like to create sounds like this but I'm afraid that equipment like this is too costly for me. Is there some VST Instrument/plug-in that can emulate those sounds?
@synth4ever

+Oliver Ivesic Hi Oliver, thanks for coming back. :) I'm sure there are many VSTs/softsynths that could do somethings similar to this... actually, there is Waldorf Nave and Waldorf Largo softsynths which might interest you: www.waldorf-music.info/en/largo-overview www.waldorf-music.info/en/nave-overview That said, nothing beats the immediacy of hands-on, tactile control (ie knobs). If you scour Craigslist and eBay, I think you'll be able to find a Waldorf Q rack for a decent price, my guess is $600-$800, maybe less or more depending on seller. Check www.searchtempest.com and www.adhuntr.com and see what turns up!

I haven't compared Blofeld directly to Waldorf Q but many people say Blofeld sounds different. I agree that a lot of new digital synths these days sound almost too clean... perhaps its the lower resolution DACs/components used in old digital gear back in the day that gives them sonic charm... in any case, if you come across a Q be sure to grab it!

Thank you very much. I believe the Micro Q is a cut down version of the Q in a number of areas, but I haven't played one to confirm. This thread goes into detail: www.gearslutz.com/board/electronic-music-instruments-and-electronic-music-production/1098572-waldorf-q-vs-micro-q-sound-capability-differences.html Personally I would recommend the Waldorf Q for the interface alone. @synth4ever

Probably Waldorf Q as it's more traditional subtractive virtual analog and can mimic a variety of sounds. Waldorf XT is wavetable only and it can be difficult to tame at times, but it sounds great in the wavetable realm.

This is really lovely. One question I have is, when you go back to a parameter (Like osc 2 after tweaking osc 1), does the value jump as soon as you move the knob, or does it wait for you to match the current value, and continue from there? Really great channel, thanks for your time!
@synth4ever
@synth4ever 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Unfortunately I don't have the rack Q unit anymore so can't tell you for sure, but I believe it remembers where you are for each osc so sudden jumps aren't common. However, you'd need to confirm in person or review the manual to be sure.

Jesus, you're good..and that synth...wow. Are there any similar synth/boards that can push out chill tones like that with minimal programming effort? I know the Blofeld is a cheaper alternative, though it looks like it would be lacking in the full hands on experience like the Q can provide. This synth board is extremely rare and almost impossible to buy nowadays, even used. : //
@synth4ever
@synth4ever 9 жыл бұрын
greg chuchelo Thanks Greg! There are lots of synths on the market to choose from, depending on your interest and needs. Waldorf Q is a great knobby digital/virtual analog synth, you can often find used on eBay. Blofeld I haven't tried but I've heard sounds nice, I just don't gravitate towards the interface due to lack of knobs. You might also consider the Virus series (Virus B, C, TI / TI2), Novation synths (Supernova II, KS4/5, Ultranova etc) and possibly Yamaha AN1x (though interface isn't as easy to use). There is also the Roland JD-800 with all its sliders, and Microwave XT (wavetable synthesis). I'm only suggesting those I've tried, but there are plenty of others as well... keep your eyes peeled on Craigslist! ;)
@javiceres
@javiceres 8 жыл бұрын
With minimal programming I'd say no. Except if you play a "one key wonder" preset in a workstation like, say a Korg M3. But if you want to achieve this kind of sounds you need to learn and program more than a bit. Virus A B and C don't do wavetable synthesis because you can't scroll/morph the waves like waldorf synths can do. I don't know about the TI. Nord synths also won't do true wavetable synthesis. Blofeld is a heck if a wavetable synth. The reverb is a lot worse than Q's, but you can still use it's delay wich is perfectly OK or cut a lot of the high content in the reverb parameters and put it in the background. Perhaps you can use an old Korg Wavestation, whether physical synth unit or computer software version. Waldorf Nave app will take you even further. There are some software wavetable synths but I don't know their names.

They are similar in certain ways, but much different in others. XT as you probably know is full wavetable synthesis, Waldorf Q is virtual analog + 2 wavetables. So if you are into the wavetable sound, Waldorf XT is your best bet. If you are looking for virtual analog and a tiny bit of wavetable synthesis, Waldorf Q is a good choice. Both sound amazing regardless and are made by Waldorf (of course), so you can't go wrong either way, IMO. :)
