Copart is trash. I was at their Phoenix location a year ago to pick up a salvage title F30 328i, and there was some 18-year-old kid who had flown halfway across the country to pick up a crashed WRX STI, he arrived at the copart location at 8:00 a.m., did all the paperwork and got the title by 10am, and his STI was delivered to him *AT 7:00 p.m.*! Everyone at Copart knew he was waiting for his car, and they did everything within their power to ensure that he had to wait an unreasonable amount of time to receive it. He politely inquired multiple times about when his car would be unloaded. All the staff blew him off and told him to wait and that it would be out soon. Seems like the staff was colluding with the auto transporters and tow truck drivers, and made it so that if you did not pay an auto transporter to pick up your car from Copart for you, then you would be last in line, no matter what time you arrived to pick up your vehicle. They made me wait an unreasonable amount of time as well, but luckily I showed up in the afternoon, so I was inconvenienced a bit less than the WRX STI kid was. Also, the lady who helped me with the title and the paperwork inside the Phoenix location was absolutely terrible. Almost refused to give me the title to my own car that I had already paid for. From what I've heard, all Copart locations are like this. They hire bottom of the barrel employees, nobody is happy to work there, and nobody takes any pride in their job.

IAAI has always been better than copart. copart got way too popular recently as well. most of the prices arent event worth it. and they use a damn forklift to get your car which causes damage. even if its a lambo its going on a forklift. and you cant drive the car you have bought off the lot even if its a clean title with only scratches. even though you own it.

Copart did that damage with their long fork loaders. I picked up cars from IAA and Copart for about 12 years and transported them to salvage yards. It was very common for the operators at the auction to wildly pick up and drop the cars. Notice how the damage doesn’t have any rust? It’s fresh. Wacking oil pans was almost a weekly occurrence. It doesn’t matter unless it’s one of their “premium” sale cars, they are moving the cars around all the time with reckless abandon. The yards I delivered to used the shorter forks and we would pick up from the sides of the car but with caution

When I worked as a mechanic, if we knew a car was going to auction and it had potentially catastrophic engine damage (bad timing chain, no oil pressure, etc) we would pull a few fuses starter and fuel related fuses and leave them with a detailed note in the glove box. Auctions and towing companies can be awful when it comes to starting engines that should be left alone

We have Copart here in the UK too (assuming it is the same organisation). They are indecently red-hot quick to collect insurance write-offs. My wife drove into the back of another car at 15mph during a coughing fit. They wrote her car off but I negotiated with the engineer on the phone and bought it back, and fixed it for no money. However, four days before he phoned but after I'd received an email from Copart telling me it was being written off, a driver from Copart called me on my cellphone & said he was en route to collect the car and would arrive in 35 minutes! I told him I would be buying the car back but he got pretty precious about it so I clarified the position by shortening the words & hung up. It felt like the vultures were dropping out the sky to start picking.

Inspect it carefully every year, and repair hoses when they show signs of deterioration to keep the DOOM away. Then 24 coil packs and spark plugs to deal with... Replace rotors and pads rather than just pads, replace flex discs... See you every week for quite some time Waldo! AND GREAT BUY! Looks like you WON the gamble!

I have some constructive ideas as a vehicle engineer. These rods ar fracture split, they absolutely unique and the caps can fit on only one way. The other thing is, you checked the lower bearing half, which is the unloaded side, the upper ones always have more wear or damage. My opinion is that, the guys at the auction thought they could get out more money from the car if they are listing it as run & drive and they didnt care about the potential engine damage.

As a long haul flatbed trucker who used to haul a lot of auction equipment purchases for buyers, I always enjoyed dealing with Ritchie Bros, any location. They always seem to respect the truckers time. Check in, pick a ramp, they roll, push or drag the equipment on and you are loaded. When I pulled RGN trailers, I often loaded myself but they were always awesome about jumping batteries, they have on site mechanics that will try to get dead equipment running or they will work to get it loaded with the truck driver. I have hauled wrecked cars from insurance lots to LKQ, and they are always good at unloading quickly but it's always on a flatbed.

Great content and a wonderful project. I was very surprised that when the rob cap was removed at 4:47 and then upon reinstallation at 5:47 you commented that you weren't sure which way the rod cap goes back on. From the rough parting line that appears to be a fractured cap connecting rod. They're stronger than rods with machined big-ends, because the fractures are supposed to be lined back up. Since the orientation had a 50/50 chance you may have gotten lucky, but I'd think checking the parting-line contact with Prussian Blue would have been a good idea, so that you'd be 100% sure of the cap going back on in the correct orientation. Looking forward to more of your great content.

My Mercedes workshop once told me: The engine normally does not suffer any damage if it is started briefly without oil. However, the turbocharger should not run without oil; it will then be damaged immediately. The turbocharger rotates at over 80,000 revolutions and kicks in at 1,500 engine revolutions. Because of the high speed, the turbocharger spindle is not ball-bearing-mounted, but rotates in an special oil film that is generated under pressure. Without this oil film, the turbo spindle hits its shaft. If the engine no longer has any power above 3,000 revolutions, the turbo (one or both) is destroyed. This is also why regular oil changes are extremely important for turbo engines. Bad oil damages the turbo first, and the Mercedes specifications for engine oil should also be strictly adhered to.

Don't know what you paid for it, but suffice it to say, you definitely scored! Because if you were willing to potentially drop a replacement engine in it, and still come out on top, you hit the jackpot when you didn't have to! Congrats, nice looking car. Thanks for your honest review!!!

A family member needed a cheap car, so I bought a Nissan from Copart and drove a long way to pick up. Auction pictures showed all airbags intact. When I got there, the steering wheel airbag had been cut out. After driving all that way, the manager only offered to cancel the auction and refund, which wasn't helpful after finding that car, winning the auction and then driving that far to pick up. I ultimately took the car as is and was able to get a replacement airbag and clock spring at a salvage yard on the way home for $100. They were rude and seriously unhelpful.

While using liquid Molly was the absolute correct thing to do your contention on 040 as opposed to 540 is opposite of the reality. Many different threads on a number of different forums validate some relatively new oil research for our engines

As someone who recently bought my first salvage car from CoPart, it was definitely not a great experience. While I'm lucky that this one was represented fairly accurate, the fees were as much as the vehicle in price. Add the lack of communication from the transport company and you've got a very bad experience. Definitely will be using 'the other guy' next time I do this.

The facelift W221 is just such a handsome looking machine. It's somehow subtle yet super imposing at the same time. I do think you could do with finding some AMG style wheels though as the S600 generally got some fairly generic and dull designs...

Hey Waldo it's good to see you again on YT with new contnet. I keep my thingers crossed for you with your S600 a lovely car to drive when maintained properly. I bet you'll take care of her. It's a pitty that you had bad experience with COPART. Frankly speaking there should be a special notice on auction DO NOT START NO OIL IN THE ENGINE. Recently I had won a car on the auction, shipping inside the US from Orlando Copart yard to Savannah port took around 2-3 days, no regrets it went smoothly. It should also work the same way for local buyers, smooth and easy pick up from the yard. I fully understand that they could have some delays during "peak season" though in America "client is Kings". What's going on in America? Greetings from Poland.

I own '08 S550 W221 with V8. Love this car! I have owned 72 cars since 1974 and this S Class is the best of them all.. I think Mercedes doesn't make anything close to these today.

Hey Waldo thank you for your recent video 👍🏻 Now many years ago I did have a S Class 350 W221 Diesel and it was a fantastic car. Probably the best car I’ve ever owned and was sorry to have sold it. Anyway I do have a E Class Wagon W212 now and purchased it because my Beagle (Paul) loves the ride because of the air suspension and the space he has in the back of it or is it still called a trunk 🤷 Good job naming and shaming, other Tubers in the UK even complain about them! Take care Waldo 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

They intentionally make you wait obnoxious amounts of time if you don't use the tow companies and auto transport services they're buddy buddy with. Its all part of their game don't think its not on purpose or just "poor management". Copart is bottom of the barrel. Any other auction yard/company is better.

I'll bet a 100 bucks this car was stolen, beat up, and abandoned. No way anyone who owns a vehicle like that takes it off roading. If it wasn't stolen whoever drove it last didn't care about it.
