The translation of what the commentator is saying: "Some furious demonstrations... We are telling me right now that the nationalists are demonstrating violently against the "God save the Queen". It's the first time we see that here at Arms Park. And here is the "Land of my Fathers", and now everyone is singing! So that's really great! Never seen that at Arms Park. Here is the Welsh national anthem. Then, the camera is fixing on the Welsh flag. We heard this wonderful choir which was rising to the sky, the Arms Park's grey sky, the Welsh national anthem."

As a proud Englishman, I think that the Welsh have every right to not have GSTQ imposed upon them as it's interpreted as being English and therefore a threat to the Welsh existence, I also feel that we as the English should not have GSTQ playing before sports/cultural events as it's not English but British, I feel nothing for Britain other than it's an outdated political union and believe we should have maybe Jerusalem or Land of Hope & Glory, something to reflect our people and our land!

As a long-time fan of the tournament (1967), it was in the 60s and 70s that I heard the most beautiful Land of My Fathers. There was a kind of meditation in that song, the sobriety of the Welsh people gave it an extraordinarily solemn dimension, there was something grandiose emanating from the Arms Spark, quite unlike what happens now where people don't miss an opportunity to be seen by the cameras with no respect for their anthem, its words or its song. These days, it's not supporters who are present, but clowns with paint jobs and ridiculous hairstyles, whose egos are matched only by their imbecility and disrespect. In recent years, the end of the anthem has been changed, giving the yellers a chance to express themselves. What a far cry from the magic of the 60s and 70s. I've always thought that the tournament couldn't be what it is without those moments of magic that will forever be etched in legend. Over the last few years, changes in behaviour in rugby stadiums, where we've seen a sort of Americanisation of supporters, whose lamentable attitudes are relayed by TV cameras, have contributed to completely undoing the magic of the tournament. O tempora O mores
@pierreandreline
@pierreandreline 2 ай бұрын
Thank you Stéphane for this comment, but I still find the observation a little harsh. Of course, things have changed but it seems to me that respect and emotion still reign in the stadiums today. Particularly with the anthems, we must not forget that Flower of Scotland has only been sung since 1990, that the music stops quickly to allow the audience to bring an extra layer of soul to the players through the force of singing. As for the cameras on the clowns in the stadium, it's an epiphenomenon that should not be taken too much into account. Likewise, mixing and sharing between opposing supporters remains essential and with as much depth as ever. In my opinion, from my little experience.

This is before my time but it still surprises me that they played GSTQ at Cardiff Arms Park. I only ever remember the proper Welsh anthem being played here. The notes, in French, suggest that this was the first time Land of my Fathers ( I cant spell it in Welsh) was played before a match. Is that true? I certainly remember all through the 70s that GSTQ was played as Scotland's anthem in Murrayfield, where it received much the same accompaniment from the Scots crowd as it did from the Welsh here :)
@danielmacken3314

+Marty Molloy The commentator certainly says it was the first time that God Save the Queen recieved that reception. He then says that the crowd signing Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau had 'never been seen', but the way that he puts it gives me the impression that it hadn't previously been sung with such gusto. The commentator was very impressed.
@ninianpark1329
@ninianpark1329 7 жыл бұрын
I believe they only sang GSTQ when a member of the Royal family was attending. The first time Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau was sung was 1905 against the touring All Blacks. Apparently they sang it in response to the New Zealand Haka. I may be wrong, but I think this was the first time a National Anthem was sung at a sporting event.

@@ninianpark1329 Absolutely correct in every detail! Wales on that day established the custom of a country singing its national anthem at the outset of international sporting events. Playing the same type of adventurous, entertaining, skilled and daring rugby as we play today, we also beat the All Blacks on that day, where England had failed dismally the previous week. So not only were we innovative and creative in establishing the singing of national anthems, we were also the first European team to beat New Zealand. Also, between 1900-1910, we won the triple crown six times, placing us in the same position we hold today--the dominant force in European rugby. On the question of whether Wales could stand as a nation on its own, I say a country's most important resource is its people-- and Wales punches considerably higher than its weight in all fields. Of course we could stand alone! Boot the arrogant, whingeing English out today! I'm sick of them.

Land of song and dance, Land of our fathers It does not matter whether you are Gwynhenseg, Ddyfedeg, Powyseg or Gwyneddeg, we are all finally united as one proud nation, after so much infighting and betrayal from the Saxons

@stuy265 I totally agree with you.Five nations live for such moments like "land of my father",it is part of the magic feature of the tournament. I have never heard anthem song with such enthousiam particularly in 70' because it was known here in France that most of fan's worked hard in mines. Today I don't feel same enthousiasm because spectators are in stadium to see themselves on screen. The values are not the same ,the anthem is not song with same spirit like 70's. o' tempora ,o'mores!

become in your persevering confidence, knowing who you are and where you are from, an object of obsession in the eyes of the less confident and more insecure world.... in the observant, flustered and envious eyes of karezza777, for example. we know who we are and where we are from and where we would be if we had to go back from whence we originated- the British Isles. Cymru Am Byth! This assuredness, and the deep-set eyes and other good looks, allow us to be magnanimous, and not racist, to all!

boti, we Welsh have more in common with the Bretan People and a lot of your language is similar to Welsh. I feel just as you do, I would always cheer on France before England in any kind of tournament.

bernice wigginx the sound echoed around the stadium which meant that the band and choir on the one side always finished before the opposite side. It was weird but beautiful to hear. I know because I was there

There are a great number of male voice choirs in Wales I think. More recently the enchantment of female voices have been added which was the missing component.

just explaining the significance of you welsh making noise over the god save the queen then all joining in the singing of land of my fathers, the announcers were bilingual enough and knew enough about your culture to understand it was a huge moment for the welsh. so they briefly explained it to the french spectators and then let the french listen to you sing. it was out of respect to your people that they talked so that the french fans would understand what was going on.
