Exactly what's been happening in my home town too. The Council are just taking people's council tax payments and we receive less services but the payments keep increasing. There was a so called regeneration project that took place at what is called The Riverhead. It's right in the heart of the town centre. It took them around 3 years to complete and it looks dull and depressing. They dug up the lovely trees and replaced them with what has now turned to weeds. I don't know what the heck they actually planted. There are these metal things to stub out cigarettes but no actual litter bins within the vicinity and the metal seats have also now gone too. Along Victoria Street, there are so many boarded up shops that have been deliberately left to rot. It's an absolute eyesore to say the least. Not far from the Fishing Heritage Centre, there is a pathway that takes you to different places and there is this bridge that is currently under construction. The work started weeks ago and each time I've been in that vicinity, I can honestly say that I have only seen the work men there working a couple of times. I said to the work men, any idea when the work is going to be completed and asked if it was going to be 2030. They laughed and said they had no idea when the deadline for completion was. I did hear through the grapevine that the council had ran out of money and that they'd over estimated the costs for the bridge repairs. true or not, when I heard that it came as no great shock. It's heartbreaking to think that Grimsby was once a thriving little place and how it was even internationally recognised too. No end of international sales reps would visit/stay in Cleethorpes too when they were on business. In Cleethorpes there used to be a place called The Winter Gardens. During the week, they did a tea dance for seniors, meals all week for everyone of all ages and there used to be Wedding receptions, Christenings, Birthday and Anniversary bookings too. On a Wednesday evening there used to be what was called The Bags Ball. There used to be live bands and there was this huge sold wood floor dance hall were everyone could get up and have a good boogie. All ages mixed really well. The place used to be so welcoming. The council closed down the venue and replace it with these expensive apartments for the elderly. It was so sad to see another venue close it's doors for good. I can well understand why no one would want to come to either Grimsby/Cleethorpes for vacation because there's just nothing for anyone to do. There are still the arcades and a few pubs but that's about. The only lovely part of Cleethorpes is the boating lake. I often walk around there because it's just so therapeutic.

Oh, Rhyl, dear Rhyl, by the Irish Sea, With sands so fine and a touch of debris. Fish and chips in hand, I stroll with pride, Dodging the gulls, and the ebb of the tide. From the promenade lights to the neon glow, Where the penny slots line the arcades row. Kisses by the pier, sly and sweet, As the scent of salt and vinegar meet. The pubs are lively, the pints flow fast, Locals and tourists having a blast. With laughter loud and voices slurred, Bold tales are spun and rumors heard. For Rhyl, dear Rhyl, may not be the Med, But it’s a place where memories are bred. Where hearts are light, and spirits high, Under the wide, grey Welsh sky!

I'd LOVE to see more of the UK with my kids; However, I don't drive and we are a low income family. We can fly to Tenerife for less than train travel to the parts of the UK we'd like to see. If we ignore the getting there and the weather, The holiday rentals are rarely competitively priced. EVEN the average campsite is upwards of £35 a night for a square of mud, shared bogs, and neighbours who even can hear you use a zip! But mostly, the train fares need to be train fair! A 50% discount for families on benefits maybe? Commuters save money with their annual tickets. Foreigners can book a ticket which allows unlimited train travel to anywhere in the uk for a limited period of time.

Good coverage Wendall. I used to visit as a child in the late 80's and into the 90's. Visits in 2000 onwards it was still a ok place, funfair was great for sure, the seafront and arcades were better, there also used to an excellent open top bus service in the summer months for a cracking run down to Talacre via Prestatyn or to Towyn and Pensarn, all run done bit by bit and binned off after the 2016 season. Decline from my view was the funfair closing, Denbighshire local authority not getting a hold on what needs doing to try and stop the decline. Visits in recent years, particular on weekends and the place is full of pissheads, zombies and yobs. However saying that a walk on along the seafront towards Prestatyn is good and there are some nice countryside locations just outside the town. Lack of North Wales accents, yes lots of scousers and mancs, the local accent of the area as you noticed is mixed in with a scouse twang, very much like that towards Flintshire and Chester. I've never heard Welsh spoken in the town, I live in Oswestry on the border between North and Mid Wales just inside England and you will hear more Welsh spoken than the streets of Rhyl. Bangor was an interesting comment, yes declined for sure, despite been a university city. Caernarfon despite the thought of the castle as some rough places.

Solutions for the british costline towns: The government should bring up a bill to re-enable tourism on a large scale, meaning that money has to be disimbursed in order to wrap up the infrastructure, reopen those lovely bed and brakfast because they are part of the british culture like the pubs. Another possibility is to enable grants ftom the banks guaranteed by the central government for small business owners or entrepreneurs in order to market that hotspots well for the summer months or even facilitating quarterly tax breaks from the local councils for local business owners, whether its a fish-and-chips shop or a gambling centre in order to help investments run up again, create sustainable jobs and therefore re-create a national tourism market it was once back in time. That are just my thoughts and by the way, many thanks for asking us to think about how we think the problems could be solved, great video my friend love it ❤

Being from the north west we always went to Rhyl for our summer holidays, and spent many a great day and night there. That was the 70's and early 80's. As I got older we started going further afield and then cheap package holidays arrived so Tenerife and Benidorm and Greece were around 3 hours away and I feel it is this that killed seaside towns like Rhyl and Blackpool. What is the answer to regenerating them? I don't know, I wish I did, I love Rhyl and have fantastic memories and I hate seeing it run down. The Deutch bar is brilliant and I hope that grows and grows. Getting yesteryears bands to play is also a great idea. Not just in summer but offer a mid winter deal. If I win the euro millions lottery I would gladly denote 25% to Rhyl to get it back up and running. Rhyl and the surrounding towns have so much to offer and it needs someone to tap into the magic of the area and make those changes.

Really interesting video for someone who lives quite local to Rhyl. I remember visiting every weekend in the early 2000s because although it was on the decline it was the place to go. The council would be better off investing money into the town centre and building a sense of community up again instead of investing money in areas outside the town centre. Additionally, if people changed their perception of Rhyl and took a chance to invest in the area it could go back to being a popular place all year round.

Can you do Tenby. Although it may appear successful and well off, it used to be primarily welsh speaking until homes were bought up for holidays. Now its hard to find Welsh speakers, or even people in the winter (Not many permanent residents, messes up the local economy)
@griswald71562 ай бұрын
The locals sold their houses to non Welsh people..money is the root cause..non locals pay more..

Being Irish myself, I’ve been passing through Rhyl for 23 years on the train from Manchester via Chester to Holyhead on SailRail for the ferry to Dublin and from what I’ve seen from the train, not only has the Rhyl area but the whole of North Wales has been in terminal decline for no good reason and there is no excuse for it - the Welsh people deserve far better than this and the Welsh government should be totally ashamed of themselves - it’s got so bad now that even the SailRail services have become very unreliable because of post-Covid train strikes, but the problems in North Wales have existed since long before Covid and it’s not acceptable - in October 2022, I was stranded in Holyhead for 2 days because of a train strike on arrival back from Dublin, unable to return to Manchester and from chatting to the locals in Holyhead, they are not at all happy with what’s going on, in fact they are very frustrated and fed up with the situation in Wales

The closure of the funfair and Marks & Spencer were when Rhyl started its proper downward spiral. It had been teetering for a while since the mid-90s but the summer crowds always made up for it. Now, those crowds tend to stay in Kinmel Bay & Towyn where the caravan parks have got all the facilities they need - no real need to come into Rhyl anymore so summers get very quiet. Personally I think there's an easy fix as Rhyl's decline is mostly down to it being an unpleasant place to be: 1. there needs to be direct access to the beach again 2. the upper high street needs to be enclosed so people can eat without being divebombed by gulls and litter blowing everywhere 3. regular police patrols and coming down hard on the rampant anti-social behaviour - drunks and druggies can effectively do what they want in and around the high street with no comeback. Make it a pleasant place to be and feet will follow - just common sense. They need to put a barrier on the ASBO crowd and ex-cons who get ported over to here from cities and prison as well.

It was one of our go to places growing up when staying in towyn just up the road. Was very busy back then talking 30/40 years ago… Rhyl has always had its problems even back then The fair went The fishing boats taking the charter boats out you could book went in decline used to be 20 /30 boats a day going out would t even like to guess now… We called in few years ago pre Covid and was dead they have spent fortunes on the sea front but once you step behind the front it’s another world It’s such a shame These costal towns are struggling big style… Great video pal

Influx of ppl from outside the area usually live on these insulated caravan sites , they don’t need the local shops or most businesses as the sites got the lot . Plus Rhyl has had little investment and most the shops are shut hardly enticing . Coastal towns lack of jobs and lost alot of what made it great is gone - ghost towns .

Just visited Rhyl myself. If you have kids and fancy a decent (children focused) weekend. Head to the Lyons Caravan park - lots to do for the kiddos there. Pool w. slides, small softplay, baking etc... There is a small fun fare down by the beach and its £2 a ride.... not too shabby.

Denbighshire only has a small amount of coastline (about 7 miles) to maintain and promote for tourism. You'd think the council would be able to get their act together to make it presentable. Then again, the town itself seems to've improved in the 19 years since I lived and worked there, especially on the prom to the south of the town where there are loads of new buildings.

Nice one, Wendall. The town is dismal but you met some lovely people with good hearts. So many towns have gone this way. Makes one look at the government and wonder if they really have our best interests at heart because it seems to be the opposite right now. It's like a controlled demolition.

I recall in the 1960's Rhyl was very popular, but Llandudno further down the coast had a little more class, the more well to do went to Llandudno while the common people flocked to the more brash and garish Rhyl, with its fun fairs and real working class vibe. Perhaps today they need to make visiting the seaside cool again, improve the accommodations, make it worthwhile with craft fairs, music, inexpensive restaurants with local food, there are so many who want to go to Spain, or further to find the sun: make a seaside holiday within people's reach, and improve the local industries.

I live not far from Rhyl. There is nothing there to do nowadays because the council have closed everywhere down and wont spend any money. Like the new indoor market it just sits there brand new and never been opened. Obviously some back handers took place at the council

Wendall, a possible solution: If, by 2030 about 25% of the UK population will be over 65, then somebody needs to take the bull by the horns and use some real imagination: if young people no longer want to live in these towns (or can't because there are no prospects) then make places like Rhyl, Blackpool and Weston-Super-Mare purpose built residential areas for the elderly. They're the ones in the UK who are asset rich, so have the combined $$$ to make things nice again - and to keep them nice. Most of the seaside towns are full of run-down guest houses & grand old hotels, perfect for conversion. In The Netherlands there are purpose built "villages" now for the elderly (housing, shops, community centre, medical facilities...etc) but in the UK there is nothing similar. Social care in the UK is on its knees and the problem, with an increasingly elderly population, is only going to get worse and much, much more expensive. If nobody is visiting these places anymore, and the tourist revenue can no longer be relied on, then specially designed, purpose built seaside towns for the old folks is one possible solution. Hell, if they're nice enough then even the grandkids might like to visit. Back to reality. This is the UK we are talking about, so no fukcing way. Dream on.
