Fun fact: In Filipino mythology, there used to be 7 moons. That dragon ( Bakunawa which means bent (baku) serpent/snake (nawa), was actually facinated by the light of the moons because he live in the deepest, darkest waters. He developed a desire for them, so he started eating one moon every century (which became the origin of eclipse). There were multiple versions on how we has defeated, one is ancient Filipinos banged their pots, pans, and drums because they found out that it is scared of loud noises. The other one is before he could eat the 7th moon, we was punished by Bathala (highest/supreme god), so that is why we only have one moon. Some say he's still waiting for his chance to get the last one so there is a tradition where every century, people would make loud noises using pots but this tradition is rarely seen now. In short Bulan have beef with the Bakunawa which is seen in the MV.

Come to think of it... the chronology of the song makes sense tho. Where in the beginning of the song in which Bulan (Felip) recovered memories of his past being a Moon God. After that he rallied the mortals to prepare for the upcoming war to save the Haliya (Moon Goddess) from being devoured by the Bakunawa (Moon Eater/ Serpent Dragon). In which, if you may notice that most of the scenario of the song is in RED and Balck, depicting the scenario of the Blood Moon and the story in the Philippine Mythology of what happens when there is a Blood Moon. If you listen closely to the tune of the song... you can hear a repeating loud sound of a Gong all throughout the song, which is the weakness of the Bakunawa. And at the end of the song we can see the stillness of everything, and that the moon is back to its normal state signifying the victory of defeating the Serpent of devouring the moon.

Just want to share.. My grandma had mentioned to me several times that, when she was a kid (1950s/1960s) and there was a lunar eclipse, the people in their village would bang on pots and pans and shout to the sky "i-uli ang bulan! i-uli ang bulan!" (Return the moon) So I showed her the Bulan MV and Cashual Chuck's mini documentary, and she was like OOOHH so THAT was why they were making so much noise! Idk, I guess it really shows that Filipinos around 50/60 years ago actively believed in the bakunawa and other myths. I'm glad that Felip released this song/MV and sparked a discussion on Filipino myths and culture among the younger generation.

Seven moons were created (Bulan, Libulan, Haliya, Subang, Banolor, Banilig, and Mayari) by Bathala (supreme god) to shine light during the night (Adlaw is the sun). Bakunawa, which is a sea serpent, was captivated by the moons’ beauty would swallow one moon every 100 years. Centuries later, only one moon is left. Thus, when Bakunawa tries to devour the last moon, there would be an eclipse and earthquakes as well. So in ancient Philippines, whenever there is an eclipse, the people would make a loud noises and bang drums to scare away Bakunawa (or until the eclipse has finished). Some MV references, first stell did the intro vocals and is also heard mid-song. So Bulan and Haliya are siblings and are moon deities that is said to be devoured by Bakunawa (sea serpent). In the lyrics of the song, Bulan warned Haliya about Bakunawa The song is loud because it is told that people shoo away the Bakunawa by creating a loud noise, people used gongs and you can hear one on the end of the song. Felip and his team consulted experts about their concept to avoid revisionism to happen. The beats are co produced by Josue, Pablo's brother, he also co produced Palayo. Felip made the song and beats last 2020 and 2021. Palayo was his least favorite song but is released due to Public demand. So this is most likely what he is supposed to debut on.

If I remember correctly, the "Bakunawa" is a sea-serpent or dragon like creature in the Philippine mythology, and it’s known for devouring the phases of the moon, which during pre-colonial times, these phases of the moon were individual gods/goddesses including "Bulan" and "Haliya" (the two crescent moons). "Bulan" and "Haliya" are sibling god and goddess of the crescent moon. In our mythology, the Bakunawa had swallowed their other siblings (the other phases of the moon). Haliya and Bulan were the only ones left. Every now and then, Bakunawa would attempt to swallow Bulan and Haliya, but they would often protect eachother. The Bakunawa would disappear to loud noises including gongs, which is why at the end of the MV, the creature could not be seen anymore with the sound of the gong. Also, the logo for Bulan is actually the two crescent moons, representing Haliya and Bulan. I might have missed some details relating to the story of the mythology and relating it to the MV. But this was all I remembered from online research.

Wal and Ef,. here's Felip's thought of BULAN, "Bulan" talks about recognizing that powerful being within you and not letting other people consume your light. It shows the darker, more confrontational side of self-love. Because sometimes, the negativity gets too loud to ignore and the only way to get rid of it is to acknowledge the power that you hold and face it head-on. "Bulan" has lyrics about how negativity is being normalized-"'Di na bago sa 'kin 'to [This isn't new to me]," and for me, the way forward is to dismantle that kind of thinking-"

As written in the credits, Stell Ajero sang the intro vocals and it was meant to mimic the incantations by babaylans to summon the deities for protection. Babaylans are usually old folks, mostly men but could also be women who are the local healers, prophets, folk priests etc rolled in one. They are also considered folk historians as they know the stories of old. In some areas of the Visayas, their family or relatives memorize the cultural traditions and history and pass these on to the next generation.

I'd like to correct you on this info- babaylans are women po. And were considered as the most powerful member of the tribe (aside from the tribe leader or chieftain) coz even the tribe leaders consult them. 💡Do you know the reason why Felip used heavy beat sounds in #FELIP_Bulan? Everyone noticed that it's louder than his voice. In the legend, people managed to protect the last of the seven moons from the Bakunawa by making loud noise. They use Gong to make the dragon retreat to the sea. This shows that the heavy sounds of guitar and other beats used in Bulan serves their weapon against the enemy.

Stell did the Intro Vocals 😄 Philippine Mythology is rich & majestic .. Felip introduced one of many well-known Visayan Myth about "THE MOON". In ancient time, it is said that there are 7 Moons (Buwan or Bulan in Visaya) created by Bathala (Supreme God) to light the night sky when Adlaw (Sun God is not around. The Sea-Serpent or Sea-Dragon in the MV is BAKUNAWA, who is obsessed with the beauty of the 7 Moons. So, every 100 yrs. it will surface from the depths of the Sea and swallow one moon that causes ECLIPSE, Thus the Red Colored Moon depicted in the MV. The BAKUNAWA ate the Moon's on by one until there are only 2 Moons Left, BULAN & HALIYA. When the BAKUNAWA surface again to eat BULAN, HALIYA summoned a sword to rescue his Brother, BULAN. She succeeded & the BAKUNAWA spit out BULAN, but he's no longer a Deity. As the BAKUNAWA resurface again to eat HALIYA, the remaining Moon. BULAN, that time was a young boy, accidentally learned the BAKUNAWA's weakness, which is loud noise. That's why after the intro Vocals, there came a loud rock metal, guitar riffs, that is also present all throughout the Song. By then BULAN and the people would make loud noises to save the MOON, HALIYA. The BAKUNAWA stands for the negativity that will try to swallow us. The LOUD NOISE or Rock Metal Guitar Riffs & arrangement of the song stands for, for me, as our answer to the negativity around us. It should be louder & bigger than those that will to drag us down.

The “dragon” is actually a sea serpent : “Bakunawa”, backstory, the Bakunawa has this motive to eat the moon out of jealousy (hence why there are moon eclipses) and to put into context Haliya (the Moon Godess), Bulan (The Moon God) and their remaining siblings, fought “Bakunawa” some were eaten, but Haliya and Bulan successfully defeated Bakunawa by Haliya’s Sword and Bulan being an observer and founding Bakunawa’s weaknees which is Loud Noises (which is quite evident also in the song, wherein as you said Felip’s voices were in between the chords and not on top of it, as it was the Loud Noises that made Bakunawa weak. This is just from my own research and interpretation 😊 Hope you enjoy learning out culture!!

I find it interesting, Bulan in Indonesia (bahasa) mean moon and the lyrics said Bulan is the god of moon

This is back by a local mythology the main characters is like a metaphor of the people in our society too. So the way Felip explains the idea behind the song is quite mind blowing he does make sense. If he could explain it that way you can't deny the wisdom between his head and his heart.
