Walk (A Canon T7i Short Film)

I developed a habit in College that whenever I felt really stressed i would go talk a walk to process or even just get away from what was causing the stress. This film is a representation of that habit. I shot this film entirely on my own over the course of a couple weeks while I explored my home town. I also took this chance to challenge my gear to its limits and see just how cinematic of an image it can produce. I think it came out pretty well I i have to say so myself. I hope you enjoy!

Lighting and story are everything. The camera is not. It's the content that matters. A tip to whoever is starting a channel. I use canon t3i, canon g30 camcorder, and have grown my channel to over 6.7 million views and 11 thousand subs. It's a hard road on here to grow but people are looking for content. Take the time to make good videos and you will grow.

@@mohammadrafin8243 sure thing! I kept the shutter at 1/50, aperture between 1.8 and 2.8 and my iso between 100-400. I also used an ND filter to cut down the brightness with such a wide aperture. Video profile was the neutral profile with sharpness brought down to zero.

@@mohammadrafin8243 I mean f4 is still pretty good in the daylight, but if you are shooting more in contrasty shade or in the evening a f2.8 or 1.8 lens may be better to fight having to crank your iso up and give you more separation from the back ground. Usually around 1600 iso is when you might start to notice a lot of noise in the shadows

Bro.... I'm thinking of upgrading to a newer camera (from the t7i) for better cinematic look, so I wanted to see what was out there with the camera I've already got. This is great! The shots, the sound, the score, and the message... what we all really needed to hear in a tough year, but me specifically on so many levels! Keep making great films and paying attention to all these details. Also for anyone watching wanting the cinematic look like this, spring for a lens that stops at or below f2.0- that's the only way you have a chance at these awesome tiny depth of field shots! Keep it up man- I'm inspired to do something this good on my t7i!

Thanks so much! I have a breakdown video about Walk and then a canon T7i cinematography tutorial if those help! In terms of settings, I just had the camera set to a frame rate of 23.97 frames pers second, shutter is 1/50 and my aperture I kept between 1.8-3.5. I used an ND filter also when in bright situations. I also shot in the neutral color profile.

I also have a t7i and I was just doing some research on it's video capabilities. This video is in 4K, but the camera only goes up to 1080. Did you shoot it in 1080 and scale up to 4K in post? Canon T7i is a great camera! You’ll have a lot of fun with it. I used two lenses. The sigma 18-35 which is a more pricey lens and the Canon 50mm f1.8 which is more affordable. The mic I used for the voice over is the Zoom h1n. Really affordable and quality mic for multiple purposes.

I started in a photography class at college not knowing what anything meant and the more I used the camera and the more I studied films then went out to try and make my own made a huge difference. Need a camera for a fan movie im doing, i am so getting this camera!! or for budget reasons do you think the canon 2000d would be just as good? also what lense did u use?

2000d is good but it’s missing a few things m. One being continuous auto focus for video in cases where you may need it. It is also missing a microphone port so you’d have to work with the in-camera microphone audio which isn’t the best. For lenses, I used the the canon 50mm f1.8 and the sigma 18-35 which is a more expensive lens if your working on a budget.

Yeah! I mean autofocus is a great tool, but there are sometimes situations where it can be relied on to work. Primarily if you have a subject walking into from. In that case it’s good to mark your position where you want you subject to walk to in the grime with tape or an object to show your actor where to go. You can set you focus manually for that position either by using autofocus first with you subject in frame. Then locking that focus by switching to manual focus and have your actor take starting position. I did that a lot for this film and I used the canon app to set focus on my self

Thank you! I use Adobe Premiere Pro, but I think next year I’m going to give DaVinci Resolve a try. T5i is a great starter DSLR. It will have everything you need to dive into video and photo.

Yeah! So I did a lot of that recording on my own. I would go back to the location and record my footsteps or ambient sounds on my Zoom h1n recorder then stylize it in post. For some other projects I also pull some sound effects off Epidemic Sound. They have a lot of great options to pick from.

I’m sure you can definitely make something great with the T7! It’s the same sensor as the T7i, but the autofocus just isn’t as fast. I highly recommend shooting in manual focus when you can. It might be tough and you might redo the same take over and over again till it’s perfect, but be patient with yourself and your camera and I promise you that it will be worth it.

@@deondriamichelle No problem at all! Oh I completely forgot to tell you the settings I used too lol. I had shutter at 1/50 for everything, an aperture ranging from 1.8-4.0 depending on the shot and lighting situation and the ISO never went over 400. I would definitely buy an ND filter to ensure you you get the image you desire. As for a video about the settings and how I filmed this project, I’ve gotten a few requests to do one and I’m currently writing one out. Hopefully I’ll film it soon!

You have a good eye! I upscaled the footage to 4K from 1080. It helps fight the image compress KZbin does to videos.

@@Triscuit08 both good choices! It depends what you want to do more of. If you are thinking more video than photography than I would pick the T7i or T8i. If you are more photo focused then I would probably pick Nikon, but the T7i also takes really great photos too.
