I have the base model v6 4x4. just took it out on the trails for the first time yesterday, and i was blown away by how well it performed in some dog shit conditions. had it all, dirt, gravel, mud, rocks, even without the rear locker, she took it all like a champ bro.

Great video. I have a stock '17 quicksand TRD 4x4 Offroad Tacoma and appreciate how you advise people not to be pressured to add all the upgrades at once, because it's a great truck in stock form. Right now I'm just focused on a new grill and bigger tires. I have too many expensive hobbies, I'll have to prioritize. Thanks for the awesome content and inspiration!

I agree with Jillian, tires and sliders and go. When I first started out, I was told to get sliders here in Southern Nevada area due to all of the rocks/boulders on many trails out here. Sliders are necessary to save your rocker panels and pinch welds. I heeded that advice and am SO glad I did. I only did dirt roads until I got my first set of sliders. Then the first day out on them I was so glad I had them as I used them a lot the very first day. I was so glad. I had some older Mickey Thompson Mud tires on my Xterra when I bought it, and those were next to be changed out. They were on their last year so I swapped them out for some Michelin K02's and never looked back ever since. I love the K02's and have Never gotten any flats with them. So yes, Sliders and Tires and GO!

Why mess with a good thing? Toyotas will go hundreds of thousands of miles without anything other than routine maintenance. Once you start adding chips and tunes and what not it messes with the reliability of the engine because it's not designed for it. Sure an air filter and high flow exhaust won't really do anything other than increase the air flow which don't affect the reliability. But these engines aren't meant to be beasts. Not crazy fast, not crazy powerful. Just a well rounded engine. Guys back in the day wheeled vehicles on stock suspension with cranked torsion bars for lift and sub 120hp 4 cylinder engines. They managed to get by with a heavier rig and less power than we have available to us now.

Does your truck make a rattle sound when you drive slow over bumps in neutral or with the clutch down? I have a 2019 OffRoad manual transmission and apparently according to the tech it's normal I test drove 2 other trucks that they had on the lot and they did the same according to the tech it's coming from the drive line when theirs no pressure it rattles over bumps . I wished I would of known not to happy about having a 35k truck that rattles over bumps

Thanks for doing this post J.R.! I caught a brief walkaround of your rig with Brad of TrailRecon a couple months back and was really impressed with the set up. My fiance and i are considering upgrading to overland camping and i was curious about your fridge setup. I'd like to avoid putting a fridge in the backseat, but was curious about how the Dometic has held up to the evironmental elements considering your spend a lot of time in the desert. My research shows that Snomaster and ARB Element are specifically designed for exterior use, and both have great reviews with few major negative reviews to construction or design or power consumption. I have considered the Snowmaster over the ARB because of sizing options, i dont think we need a 63qt....yet. You mentioned you might do a separate fridge specific post, and i think you should. In Texas i have Snomaster and Dometic dealers within driving distance, and I do like the functionality of Dometic and the many size options available. We would be considering a 40'ish quart, but you now have me curious about two things... How has the Dometic held up for you on the exterior? and Why did you go with 75qt? Other than additional space for longer of the grid food capacity, could you still benefit from a 40'ish quart? Thanks again for you post...maybe we'll see you on the trail!

Greta set up. Q on the 33” tires, did you have to do anything for rubbing and did you lift the truck with the ICON set up.
@JillianRebekahMountainYot
@JillianRebekahMountainYot 5 жыл бұрын
Probably got about 2 inches from the Suspension. The 33" tires did rub quite a bit on the fenders. Thankfully after massaging some of the plastic, trimming a little bit from the bumper and adjusting the castor they are almost perfect. IT DOES still make contact on a smooth part of the body at full articulation, but typically when that is happening my speed is pretty minimal.

Very nice, with all that weight have you done anything to boost engine power or gearing?
@JillianRebekahMountainYot
@JillianRebekahMountainYot 5 жыл бұрын
Im not sold on ANYTHING that is currently on the market that claims to boost engine power. A re-gear is a common route but I like the way my truck drives on the highway and while I am heavy I feel that my manual transmission allows me a lot of control and a re-gear just isn't for me (at least not at this time). I DO however want to add a T-case for additional power while Offroad and dealing with obstacles...but that's much further down the road.

@JillianRebekahMountainYot
@JillianRebekahMountainYot 5 жыл бұрын
Not required, but you could do it to remove ALL chance of rubbing. The tires still make contact on the body at full articulation, but it's a smooth part and would likely be moving slow when this occurs. I ended up massaging back some of the plastic liner, trimming a little of the bumper and adding more caster.
