Reminds me of living in florida, had just had our rheem air conditioner installed not even a year, the compressor was overloading on the high pressure switch because of grass clippings blocking the condenser outside, unfortunately needed a new compressor luckily warranty approved of the work, the kind HVAC technician even let me watch and help, we also uninstalled the entire condensing unit and put a second slab under it so the grass clippings wouldnt get blown into it again, (extra cost for materials, but was worth it) my dad had 3 tenants before he sold it, none of them had ac issues at all!

Nice job of troubleshooting, it's best to troubleshoot while the unit is running. In my corner of industry to remove the guarding for live testing requires a VP to sign. So imagine being a service guy trying to figure out what is going on and to do a test with the guards off you have to follow the chain of command and escalate up one by one. Every time we have found a way around doing the testing with the guards off. It's amazing what you learn about the equipment when you have to troubleshoot and test it will the guards on.

I had this happen once. One fan was a master and the other was a slave that turned on to supplement power if discharge pressure got too high. THis blew out the oil temp sensor as well. Since one fan motor usually doesnt run I would reset it and monitor it and everything seemed fine. Eventually I put a temp probe recorder on it to find out why it was cutting out. Once I found the high head temp that was the clue. Now I always check condenser fan motors. Just as a quick check to maximize time.

hard to beat flowing cool/cold water to tool things *** 1/3rd of that water flow would have done about the same, the downside of a compressor is the large void/air gap from internals to externals. changing the fan and firing it as shortly after the overload reset would cool it the fastest, assuming it still as refrigerant in it!

Too much work is a good problem to have. As hectic and crazy as things are when you're absolutely overloaded with work, it's 10x better than sitting around waiting for something to do. Granted, a little bit of down time isn't the worst thing in the world. It gives you some time for any type of re-organizing you may have been putting off. Hi , Chris, one thing I'm not sure I understand : over here I'm used to dealing with high head pressure switches that only reset manually, in order to prevent the compressor from cycling on and off on high head , so , usually, you'll get a no cooling call , and when you get to the condensing unit you find the high pressure switch " activated " and you have to press the reset button on it , otherwise it won't start. Then you know for sure it cut off on high head and you can investigate. Do you guys in the States use automatic reset high head switches? Is there an advantage or a particular reason behind it ? Thank you again, Chris 👍
@HVACRVIDEOS5 жыл бұрын
We do have manual reset switches and will use them occasionally. But this unit came with an auto reset and it's never been changed to a manual reset.
@sterlingarcher465 жыл бұрын
@@HVACRVIDEOSI guess it must be so the unit doesn't stop completely and ruins all the products in the walk in , I'm not used to them but I think we got them too , I just haven't worked on walk ins for a while, to my demise 😕
@xxxviii0075 жыл бұрын
Auto reset is ofter desired in low temp food aplications to maximize time for a repair to be made befor losing all the product. A failure will cause the HPS to trip, and some time will pass befor the head pressuse drops. This will cause reduced capasity and the box will warm, usually to 20°F or so. Alarming the customer to put in a call, but not lose everything.

Don't some compressors have oil pumps that must run in the correct direction of rotation?
@xxxviii0075 жыл бұрын
Most compressors have bi-directional pumps for reciprocating compressors. Hermetically sealed also have bi-directional pumps (recip in a can). Scrolls however have a directional bias and need to have proper rotation, which can be verified by proper high and low side pressures. Plus when a scroll is backwards it tends to be very loud. Ive never seen a 3 phase rotary compressor so direction is set with the start componants, and centrifugal, and screw compressors lubricate much differently.

How did you calculate your target head pressure ? Ambient over 20 or 30?
@HVACRVIDEOS5 жыл бұрын
This was a micro channel condenser so if your looking for an estimate I would use 20 over ambient. But remember we dont use that to check charge, it's a sight glass system so we clear the sight glass and make sure we are no higher than 30 over ambient, 20 is the target. But we would also need to verify proper evap superheat once the unit gets down to temp

@DavidHarsant15 жыл бұрын
the guy who invented the manual reset moneymaker is a genius.
@xxxviii0075 жыл бұрын
When tripping on a auto reset you still have time for the pressures so fall and reset which is lost capacity. The box will warm, and you will get a call. But most times the product remains frozen, or at least firm enough for a safe re-freeze. Manual reset is condemning the freezer into a full thaw after the next defrost terminates. Then only warmer from there.
@akhermit52135 жыл бұрын
@@xxxviii007 Based off of my experience here, customers with walk in freezers that trip a manual reset, call me faster due to the sudden spike in air temperature. The food being hard frozen, will last quite some time. With the auto resets, they don't call because it still seems to be working, and the food is still below freezing, so they ignore it. Then when the compressor finally craters, their soft frozen food thaws really fast, they panic, they call, and the compressor may or may not be available locally. At that point they usually have to move the food until the repair can be made. That is my experience here, other areas could be different. That is why i don't like auto reset hi pressure cutouts. YMMV
@DavidHarsant15 жыл бұрын
@@xxxviii007 most customers i know have alarm monitoring that sends the manager a message alerting them of the room temp, so that isnt really a problem. Something caused the HP to trip, its best to sort that out rather than just let it cycle the whole time on a trip setting.
