When troubleshooting don't ever just stop at the first problem, always keep looking and always test the system operations, I found a major flaw in the schematic on this evaporator and I'm glad I caught it while onsite.

This is why I like Chris so much. He's a real down to earth guy who actually talks about dealing with anxiety and depression. He always says that he's not perfect and that he's always working on himself to be better tomorrow. That's a real leader. That's a real person that can teach others. He shows his mistakes in his videos. I love that because I learn from those mistakes and he always addresses the mistakes and talks about them. This is why he is a great teacher for this trade and a great role model. Thanks again for everything brotha. You rule dude.

My favorite part of the HVAC videos is always seeing all the dry rotted closed-cell insulation that is just slid on instead of proper 3 piece 90's. Some PVC jacketing would make that stuff outlast the units and perform the same from day 1. The insulation I mean. :P

I still think you need to modify your Contracts to include a $500.00 Propping the Fridge/Freezer Door Open Penalty followed by a Mandatory addition of an Air-Raid Siren Open Door Alarm triggered by the Propped Door Penalty... So every time they Prop the door open and you can prove it, they pay both the $500.00 Penalty AND pay to have the Door Open Siren installed... Make sure you choose a Siren that can be heard in New York...

Great video Chris . I must say for some reason those Russell / Cold Zone style evaporator coils have problems with blades rattling and vibrating and that causes a mounted on the coil thermostat to fail . Either the bulb breaks or it just goes out of range . Seen this also on the new style Larkin coils with the thermostat bracket . Thermostats fail due to vibration or thermostat bracket not fully secured .

Chris, That circuit is always switching between #3 on the time clock and #4 depending if you are in refrigeration or defrost. So in theory you can never depend on a constant 208 volts at #3 or 4. N is always there. N and 3 is hot during defrost and N and 4 is hot during refrigeration. I always run a wire down from#1 on the time clock, now I always have 208 volts available no mater if its in defrost or refrigeration. I some time use this for the type of temp control you installed or power for a condensate drain heater. This saves running a 120 volt circuit for a condensate drain heater to plug into. If your pulling four wires one extra is easy. Great videos by the way, even after 51 years of doing this work there is always some thing that can be learned.

Here is a quick trick to balancing fan blades: Get a lawn mower blade balancer (5-15 bucks take your pick), set it on a level surface then set your fan up on it to determine how you need to tweak it. It's basically a top set upside down on a nail with concentric steps on it to set a variety of hub sizes properly. It's simple, easy, very portable, and can save time and money (which is both in any business) with replacing fan blades even if you can rebalance them without damaging the blades.

It’s funny. Quite a while back I mentioned my work replaced all of our display coolers with newer True display coolers. As it turns out, I was wrong. Target didn’t replace all of the coolers and one of them recently started doing the signature “leak of death” where, by my guess, the refrigerant is leaking out of the ailing compressor until it runs out and dies spectacularly.

That switched neutral is some dumb-ass engineering. Besides the problems you encountered, it also means that all of the connections for the evaporator motors are always live, even when they are not being called for. A less cautious service tech (or an idiot trying to defrost the unit with a knife) could get a nasty surprise.
@AnthonyDeRobertis
@AnthonyDeRobertis 2 жыл бұрын
At 208V, that's two hot legs off a three-phase supply. Each will have around 120V to ground. If they switched both legs, that'd provide a safety benefit.
@Stuart68505
@Stuart68505 2 жыл бұрын
It is 208 with two hot wires. The label of “N” is deceptive because there is not a neutral that they use for power
@Stuart68505
@Stuart68505 2 жыл бұрын
@@AnthonyDeRobertis I agree except in some cases it might just be a 208 volt A/C power supply to the building instead of a 3 phase building supply depending on the size or needs of the company.
@robertlapointe4093
@robertlapointe4093 2 жыл бұрын
@@Stuart68505 I could be wrong, but I thought that the evaporator fans were running on 120V, one leg of the three-phase 208 to neutral, as shown in the schematic. If those fans are 208, then they would need to be switched from both sides to prevent them being live when off.

Ive bent the top of the temperature control to physically press against the set wheel, to act as a friction lock, preventing it from moving, not a pretty solution but is a quick fix for customers who would prefer not to or can't spend the money on it, granted the vibration needed attending to more then that, that was pretty violent

as long as the defrost clock cuts power to terminal 4 when it goes to defrost. then you could use the NC contact of thermostat, so the solenoid coil is always powered open and have the timer open it at set point. I imagine that's what they meant to do on the schematic and just used the wrong terminal, a thermostat failure would probably fail with circuit on and box getting too cold.

Very helpful ideas on analyzing the system. I wanted to hear you explain how you make the small adjustments to balance the evaporator fan blades. Apparently the digital controller power was in series with the solenoid coil. This would drop the voltage to the controller. When the solenoid was de-energized the digital controller would lose its power. I liked how you emphasized going through all the functions. Noticing lint on the grill for the evaporator fan motors was a new concept to me. I wanted to know how you got rid of the ice in the control section of the evaporator. How do you suggest the staff should get rid of the ice instead of using table knives? I suppose putting it into manual defrost a few times would be the safest way to clear the ice. Sometimes the staff would turn off the breakers for the compressor where I used to work but then they would forget to turn it back on. It seems to be a common problem when the staff hast to run in and out of the freezer maybe you could have a discussion about how companies can deal with the problems caused by leaving the door open. Thanks, Stuart

You mentioned that the customer did not turn the T-stat, but moved due to vibration. So did they ignore it for ages while it was slowly adjusting upward? In my limited experience I’ve seen them move, but never by 50° swing without customer interruption. Also given they leave the door open, they probably know it iced up and someone may have cheekily adjusted it (or maybe boxes hit it if they were stacking them)

@farmerhunterjr

Correct it's labeled terminal N at the defrost clock which is why its marked N on that diagram but in this case its not N for neutral. Its one leg of 208v. In a smaller unit it might be neutral if the unit is 120v but in this case he is correct marking it red. In commercial refrigeration terminals marked N and G dont always mean Neutral and Ground. Its just whatever letters the manufacturer decided to label them as. You need to use your head. Also good luck diagnosing by colors. Ive seen everything under the sun used for whatever or my favorite when all they had is black so the whole unit is wired with black for all the control wires. Best advice i ever got when learning electrical is electricity is color blind you should be too. Dont trust colors.

I’ve only been doing service for a couple months. But upon going into any walk in not temping correctly, the very first thing I’d do is turn that temp control to see when the solenoid valve opens and closes in order to see if the temp control has failed (insanely common). Is there a reason why you didn’t just check that first considering you were in there first? I’d assume it’s because you’re training your apprentice?

Doesn't really matter, I know because it will power up after defrost, go thu the anti cycle delay and power up the LLS... That must have been a frustrating call none the less. Power from N goes into com then out of com into h4 then out of h4 into the fans. 4 has power always going into the other side of the fans so wouldn’t they always run and the fan delay basically bypassed? If I’m wrong please someone correct me so I can understand.

@farmerhunterjr
@farmerhunterjr 2 жыл бұрын
Hes not, it will turn off when the unit goes into defrost and turn on when it goes back to refrigeration mode. Not my favorite way of doing it but kind of necessary because you dont have constant 208v run into the evap and running a set of wires for that would be a huge pain that the customer probably doesnt want to pay for and is not necessary. Plus if you dont wire it right then you could have a situation where the thermostat will keep the unit running and never cycle off during defrost. The way he did it was pretty much standard for how its done in walk in freezers. As you can see by the diagram thats how the factory set it up minus the typo he showed
