Shrewsbury is a market town, civil parish, and the county town of Shropshire, England, on the River Severn, 150 miles north-west of London. At the 2021 census, it had a population of 76,782.
The town is the birthplace of Charles Darwin. It has had an important historic role in nurturing aspects of UK culture, including being the nursery of English drama, ballet/dance and pantomime.
The town centre has a largely unspoilt medieval street plan and over 660 listed buildings, including several examples of timber framing from the 15th and 16th centuries. Shrewsbury Castle, a red sandstone fortification, and Shrewsbury Abbey, founded in 1074 and 1083 respectively by the Norman Earl of Shrewsbury, Roger de Montgomery.
Located 9 miles (14 km) east of the Welsh border, Shrewsbury serves as the commercial centre for Shropshire and mid-Wales, with a retail output of over £299 million per year and light industry and distribution centres, such as Battlefield Enterprise Park, on the outskirts. The A5 and A49 trunk roads come together as the town's by-pass and five railway lines meet at Shrewsbury railway station.

Lovely walk through, thank you. My home town since the early sixties. A lot has changed. Losses were Woolworths, Timothy Whites, Wildings, Standish Taylor, Brattons Pianos, Crosses in Mardol, JC Pickering (the list is endless). Good to see Halons still going after all of these years. Looking back it seems too tame theses days. Pedestrianisation has something to answer for. One could drive up Mardol, Turn left at the top by Natwest at traffic lights, drive up Pride Hill and either continue down Castle Street or turn right if visiting the RSI. The pavements were narrower and two traffic lanes operated both ways. A really bustling town then. Now all I see is empty premises, eating places and people wandering aimlessly. Something worth visiting Shrewsbury though is to view a painting by Roland Spencer Ford of the "English Bridge" in the Art Gallery in The Square. Lets hope it is still there.

Chris this place has changed so much, I was born in Shrewsbury, monkmoor. 1960. Went to Belvidere boys secondary modern school, left in 1976, went over the river to Rolls Royce was an apprentice till Feb 1980. 1984 started at the Royal Shrewsbury hospital left in 2005 when I also moved away, I remember the places you speak about, so so different I remember the plough in the square but that’s gone, I also bet a lot of others too.

I visited Shrewsbury Centre today. I used to love visiting here but now there's a lot of empty shops, especially in the Dawin Centre. Also saw people sleeping in doorways and vomit on the floor, so its not as picturesque as the local residents make out

Shrewsbury - a Border town on The Marches as opposed to a West Midlands town. Different tribe. We are the Cornovii and our Welsh name is Amwythig

What time of year was this filmed? Trying to gauge when it’s so cold that you need a down coat! We plan to visit next summer to research where our ancestors came from!!

Attractive historical Town, but sadly no containers full of Spring flowers as they have in nearby countries elevating the spirit of their areas, & we're known worldwide to be a plants loving nation. 💚🌷🌼💚
