SUMMARY
--------------------
Sad for them, but you should be doing back flips!
It is probably one of the dumbest ways for a job interviewer to open up the interview, but it is one of the best things that could possibly happen to you.
Do’s, Don’ts, Always, and Never-Evers…
Before we get into the “here's how,” some do's and don'ts.
1] Look at the job description and determine what areas or activities or accomplishments in your resume most closely align and best suit you to do that role effectively.
2] The second “do” is make sure you bring a copy of your resume to the job interview.
3] You also want to make sure before you start you know what direction to go. Ask them.
4] Don’t read them what's on the resume. Don't look at your resume and start reading. You'll be very dry.
5] Don't [just] talk about the activities you have on the resume.
Here’s how to roll…
For less relevant areas, go quickly.
For home run areas, take your time, provide context, and so on. (Check the Career Achievements Journal for the exact content and info.)
I know what you’re thinking…
You might be thinking, “Andy, I could go on for an hour talking about myself, my resume.”
GOOD!
There's ways after you hit each major area in your resume, just take a pause, look over to the interviewer and just say, "Is that enough there? Did you have anymore questions about that? Did you want to discuss that any further? How am I doing? Should I go onto the next point?" Just do what you need to do to give yourself a quick break.
You get to tell them what you want to tell them, not what they want to ask you. That's the wonderful thing about getting asked that question early in the interview.

I recently had a job interview and i was searching youtube for tips. That's how i got here, i like your way of thinking and subcribed. So i went to the interview and the HR manager was going throw my resume asking what did you do after your studies, why there is a gap here ( 9 years ago) , why did you left that job etc. She did not ask me anything about the job role, or my skills....could i have asked her myself what are the skills you are looking for this role? The other staff where complete irrelevant, i mean 10 years ago i was a different person.

How can I say or how can I tell and amount to the interviewer if I have not to know the definite amount on how much the companies saved and generated with the application I have made since I was a team member and it was done years ago?

There is a question an application form wants me to answer which is “ what is your favourite story of a business which is a force for good and why “ ? I am confused does it ask me to say a specific story like a campaign or how a company started and their story

The question demonstrates the lack of skills, attention, and level or care of the interviewer. As a hiring manager I make sure to observe the candidate’s resume before the interview and craft specific questions tailored to their qualifications. I also make sure to break the ice and get to know the individual before diving right in. This creates a professional experience, and decreases nervousness. It demonstrates to the candidate that I value their time and value them as a human. The main goal here, is that even if I can’t extend an offer, I provide a great experience and preserve the reputation of the firm. All too often, companies take great candidates for granted, only filling in current openings. One must realize that the individual will obtain more experience and still has a lot of value, or may even be a great fit in case the new hire doesn’t work out. There’s also other roles this person can add value too in the future. Lazy interviewing is unacceptable.

When I'm asked this question in an interview the first thing that comes to mind is that the interviewer clearly hasn't bothered to read it before inviting me for interview so if they're truly that "lazy" it sends out a VERY strong message to me that I don't want to work for this organisation....

Hi, I got these 4 questions from a Japanese recruiter, they really made me confused. If you have any ideas about them, could you please tell me about their meaning and how to answer them effectively? 1. Please teache me about your ideal society on your background. 2. How is your ideal form connected to your ideal society? 3. How do you want to use the training to bring your current self closer to your ideal self? 4. How do you understand the difference between your ideal self and your current self? Thank you very much for your help. Your videos are awesome by the way :) Got the interview by applying some of your methods.

Hi Andy thank you for making this channel. I've watched all your videos and have one question that I was hoping you can help answer. I recently had a 3rd round interview with the managing director of a group that I was interviewing for. From the onset, the director walked in and was immediately not all there. Whenever he talked he looked at the window and at times was holding his forehead as if he had a headache. How do I approach a situation like this? I tried to be engaging with the director even with the behavior he was exhibiting and the interview went on for an hour. Unfortunately I did not get the job and the feedback afterwards was that I did well. I am at a loss as to what happened. Any ideas on how I can approach a situation like this in the future?

Man that's such an awesome question really weeds out the people who just don't care about their resume or straight up lied (worked with people that did that.. didn't last long) it's easy to read people with a question like that. Like you said just read off it but really explain what you've done, i have to disagree with that it's a lazy question.

Sorry for the long post! I have a question: What is the best way to explain my gap on my resume(7 years)? I developed a disorder during my 2nd year (2011) in college and switched to online courses. Currently, I am looking for a remote customer service job. I don't have any work experience. The only experience was in 2010 as a researching assistant and the rest were in high school (tutoring, peer counselor, and Admissions Team). Thanks so much race

I retired from my job 2 years ago after 43 years, I enjoyed those 2 years and did everything (almost) I always wanted to do but now I am starting to get deadly bored and yearn to start working again, is there a resume format that would entice employers to rehire a retiree? Youssef, you can use my build your ultimate professional resume (video) template. Simply provide some insight into what you've been doing lately in your cover letter. There's nothing wrong with wanting to go back to work. One thing you might consider is being open to a contract position. Companies love hiring more senior and expensive resources on a contract basis because it gives them and you flexibility!!!

I'm going to somewhat disagree, and say that it depends on the type of job you are looking for. If you are anything related to design or development (especially UI-UX software) - I have heard feedback from several interviewers that they were impressed by it. The second point is it should only be at most the first page, with the rest more of a traditional resume layout. The idea is to give a consolidated breakdown of what the rest of the resume says in detail. I have used mine to describe: how many projects I've worked on, entry / exit points on the SDLC, my career trajectory which is now longer than 10 years, a breakdown of how many years relevant experience both with tech stacks used, as well as, seniority of positions. To do this however, the entire document should use a layout / minimal color themes that look like it belongs together. I use mini screenshots (with a background element that is similar to the theme of the 1st page) of the applications I've worked on along side the functional aspects describing my role in building that application. They key is context.

I'm really shy to do this lol, but thank you for sharing about this. I've been preparing my resume, and cover letter, and am now working to properly "perfect" the finishing touches, and reach out in person, hopefully seeing if I get a job interview with. The position's simply an entry-level library assistant, in the children's department, and it'd be my first job before turning 19, if landed. It's truly not that bad, and am going to go as myself, with confidence, and kindred, plus going prepared, 😂 I guess it's a healthy amount of nervous.

I bring my resume, does the resume I bring look any different from the format you've discussed? Hi Andrew! I have a question about your professional resume template. It says to start with a two paragraph introduction yet as I understand it, recruiters only spend 6 seconds on a resume. So how are they supposed to read a two paragraph intro plus the rest of your resume in only a few seconds? Would be great to hear back from you!

Hey Andrew. Please help me with this. What is the best way to answer the question: "Why are you changing your career from Sales Supervisor in the commercial area to be an intern in eEngineering"? I'm often asked this and I don't know a good way to not sound as unfocused person. A datail is that right now I'm unemployed and one of the major problems here is that I'm 29 years old in the second year of Mechanical Engineering.
@andylacivita
@andylacivita 6 жыл бұрын
Alex, I totally get the issue, but you can diffuse it by telling them you've done the research and evaluated your interests, what you'd like to focus on, your strengths and how they map over to engineering and so on. You feel this is a much better career path for you and you're getting the schooling, etc. Keep in mind, what you're doing is actually quite common. People simply want to change careers and that is OKAY! One video you can check out is my job hopper video. You're not a job hopper, but the way I show the job hoppers how to explain their situation is also analogous for you. check it out and roll with it!

Good video bt I disagree though. What if the interviewer is trying to start off in a relaxed manner in order to ease off tensions and anxieties bcs a lot of ppl who go into interviews tend to be nervous and might not perform at their best. So the interviewer would have thought by getting the interviewee to discuss their resume first up would help bcs the interviewee would knw him/herself better. This would be a form of an ice breaker
