Mr. Hogan, you are a wonderful leader representative for these wonderful, and beautiful Danes! I am so glad that you posted a video of your techniques because the are identical to the techniques I have used on my past Rotties and now Wolf hybrid. It is extremely effective, positive training. Great job and I look forward to more of your videos. Please give Rocky and Augie a hug for me. I want to wrap my arms around both of them and squeeze!

Lots of different reasons WHY people would use clickers. Mostly = speed up training process in a lot of applications. Also, food-based training = faster training, especially for general obedience. IMO, the "dogs just want to please their humans" stance usually = more reliance on outdated methods, including dominance/hierarchy models and correction/compulsion styles. Anyhow, this is not really a forum for a lengthy debate. But, it's nice to get people talking, so thanks for participating.

Love your fawnequin ... don't see them very often (because they can't be show for conformation ... but they are gorgeous pets!). I've learned a lot from you. We have a 10 month old Black and he is well behaved but needs some fine tuning ... I do believe the clicker may be the answer because it is an IMMEDIATE response to the dogs behaviour while getting a treat takes a second or two. I had someone tell me you "load the clicker" so they associate the sound with a treat (repeating click/treat numerous times) then not as many treats are needed in the training process. Great video!

This was an excellent video for what information I was seeking. Well, you could call it reassurance lol! I happen to be barely 5ft tall, and although I have experience leash/walk-training large dogs, Great Danes and other Mastiffs are a bit larger. I'm glad to see that handling of such big, beautiful dogs is the same as with any other sized dog.

Clicker training is great except when you have deaf/visually impaired Danes. We use sign and touch therapy and our non-Dane rescues (hearing and seeing) also know sign. It works for us but takes patience.

This is great. I am having trouble with my Dane. When we go to off leash parks, with people walking other dogs around he is great. No issues, follows us everywhere. But at home walking in the area, he get reactive to other dogs, pulls growls, and barks. We had issues with other people, and kids, but we mastered that part. He still has issues with other dogs....Any tips. Redirection doesn't help, or even treats, once he sees a dog from far, he goes for it.

Now that my boy Sisco-Ray is 6 months old I’ll be using some of these heel techniques that I’ve not implemented yet at this stage. My boy has the audible and hand sign commands down flat but he’s not making eye contact as much as I feel he should by 6 months of age but he has been increasing his eye contact for sure. I want eye contact upon his name call, even though he’s taking commands once I say his name, just no eye contact, that nose stays down or he stares at the passerby(while still taking commands, is this strange?)…

My husband and I are looking at adopting our first Great Dane female 11 month old this next week. However, from what I have learned from the family that is fostering her is that she seriously lacks in socialization!! I have a 15 month old blind shih tzu. How would we go about introducing one to the other without there being any altercation? She will be meeting with a trainer on a regular basis until we know that there won't be any issues between the two dogs. But what can we do to allow them to co-habitate without having to banish one or the other to their kennel?

.I have a 7 month old dane. I have been socializing him since he was 8 weeks old. I take him on regular walks and to the dog park where he is so good. He plays and interacts with dogs and kids there fine. However I have started to have the occasional issue with him. Example. tonight I walked him in a very busy park and a boy ran up behind him to tackle him and Walter freaked out growled at the boy multiple times. It only happens with kids. how do I fix this issue? it only happens occassionaly.

I was here to gain insight to why people use clickers & treats. As I said David this question was not to mess with you, I really wanted to know. I still stand by dogs wanting to please you, but as with people some are just slower then other to understand what you want. Giving them heart felt praise gets results because they do just want to please you. I have had everything from mutts to double paperd dogs, house, game hunting, & flock & military guard dogs, All have had the same results.

What about other dogs approaching them? My dog is perfectly trained, and I am responsible, but it's not the case for a lot of dog owners, once we were almost attacked by one medium size dog and a small dog who pulled so hard on their owner that made him fall down and almost got loose, we ran, but what to do in these cases? I don't take my Great Dane out that much because I am afraid he is going to get in trouble due to irresponsible owners.

Hi I have a 2 year old Great Dane and he barks at other dogs when we are driving (he is on the back of a ute). He was chased and attacked by a blue cattle dog when driving in town and I think it stems from that. What processes can I go through to get him out of this. He is really kind natured but his bark scares almost everyone and their dogs.

Hey, I'd like to have some advice about adopting a Great Dane! I'm 16 and I live in a pretty big appartment (so no garden, unfortunatly) and both of my parents would love to adopt one too. The thing is that they're both working all day except on wednesday, friday afternoon, saturday and sunday. We had a conversation about adoption and they were afraid that the dog'd be lonely... I come home everyday for lunch (I've got a bit more than an hour break) so I told them I could take the dog out, and spend time with him/her during that time. Also I don't come home very late, because my school schedule is quite good. So do you think the dog'd be sad? Because that's really what matters to us... We want to adopt a dog if we're a 100% sure that he/she 's gonna be happy with us! thanks a lot!

Matthew B Cesar's videos are a great way to learn how to ruin a good dog and create a shut down dog using fear and outdated methods hosted through a man with no qualifications other than having a television show. He is an actor who advocates dangerous methods that often create worse problems than what you started with. If anybody wants to look into DVD's to help them along I suggest Dr. Ian Dunbar, Paul Owens, and Dr. Sophia Yin. All are studied and successful behaviorists/trainers with actual credentials and success who gained their fame from education, not television.
@pamatthew99
@pamatthew99 9 жыл бұрын
What are the dangerous methods. I have his DvD and he did nothing to shut a dog down or to hurt it. He has saved many dogs these so called specialists have given up on. Just because he was and is an actor doesn't mean he can't train dogs. I guess an actor also can't be president. It you want to dump on him show proof.
@00Kal00
@00Kal00 9 жыл бұрын
Matthew B Intimidation, fear, and force. Alpha theory has been disproved time and time again and also produce more problems in the long run for dogs. I'm not going to sit here and type up bit by bit all the things he does wrong because that would basically be everything. You could go ahead and search the trainers I have mentioned or do your own research so you may expand your knowledge on learning theory and dog behavior.
@pamatthew99
@pamatthew99 9 жыл бұрын
Dogs are pack animals and only 2% removed from the wolf. Caesar was put on tv because of his acclaim with animals not the other way around. You are swinging the negative yet you give no proof. What intimidation? Sorry not up to everyone else to research because you don't like his methods which again never harms a dog. I've seen first hand the results and these are happy healthy dogs.

Too see who is the most loyal, your wife or your dog, put both in the trunk of your car then shut the trunk. After about 15 minutes open the trunk and see which one is glad to see you. Caveat, use great caution while opening the trunk.

@applepiebetty
@applepiebetty 11 жыл бұрын
To them walking is like going on a hunt. Their energy is all naturally charged up. For dogs it's sex or exercise that calms them. Run or take them out more. Once each dog knows what is expected, try adding one at a time. You may have to go out with them more then once a day, but that's what you take on when you have this big of dog & that many dogs. If you have a place to let them run before going on a walk (backyard) it would be beneficial for all. Stop them, maintain control from the start.

Mona B not a helpful comment. I have had Danes for thirty years and have never had one as difficult to train as the one I have now. I have been working with him since I got him. He is extremely intelligent and learns easily. However, despite knowing full well what he is supposed to do, he still does exactly as he pleases. That includes leash pulling! Now he's 6 months old, 107lbs and 31 inches at the shoulder. I do plan on trying the head collar. I have heard good things about them!

try an easy walk, do not correct a 150lb dog with a head collar. please use an easy walk, the kind that clips in front of the chest. they work just as well and they're not painful or dangerous. the dog does not know exactly what you want from him clearly. consistency is key and you are dealing with an adolescent dog. some dogs are a lot harder than others to walk train.

Some idiot is going to use this method to partially control their dog, and then when shit hits the fan, they won't have any control or trust in the dog at that moment. If you really think you cannot fully do this or that or you think some dogs will always "just bark at the door" then I think you underestimated how smart these creatures are and how quick they learn stuff once the correct info is communicated. If it takes you 6 months to teach a dog something, you're not being clear enough.

First of all, I have never seen a dane with brown spots.... is it a dane????????????? I doubt somehow. Secondly, to walk with a dane is the easiest thing in the world, so you dont even have to train them. And third thing is for any dog to walk normaly near by, you just need to have a special leash and no clickers. Good luck

I never needed clickers or treats to get my Danes to walk properly. 3 of them at the same time. And no pulling, walking side by side and not allowing other dogs to distract them to the point that they pulled, growled or stopped. I don't get all of this junk that people think they need to train dogs with.

Dogs live to please you. Why treats or click? Great looking Danes, but those clickers & treats to teach, drive me insane. What do you do when you don't have them with you? I have trained dogs for 53 years. I work a dog with consistency, by itself (until taught) & teach it within minutes what to do. Vocal praise, chest scratch, & "Fooie" when blatantly not listening. Quickly taught they mind off leach as taught on a leach. No treats, or clicks needed.

Listen, you can get your dog to walk with you w/o using treats. You are just bribing them to walk but really it's not working. You shouldn't give treats for basic shit like that. Would you give your kids money everytime they did homework?? Would you bribe them for everytime they went to school??? You should be able to walk past dogs, people, whatever without your dog pulling. If you've done a few sessions and it aint going well still, w/e ur doing aint working. Dog training isn't that ridiculous. And it's really ridiculous you want them on less than 1 foot of leash, the way you hold it sometimes looks stiff...you can get a dog to heel without having to strap yourself down bruh.(I get you jog with them though...) Kids can walk 90lb dogs with less equipment. If you can't do that without getting out the complicated rope restraints then you haven't really understood what it takes to get a dog to follow you like you're the hottest shit on Instagram and not give a fuck about everything else. It can be done. Yes, I think treats could be used with PROPER timing of them in busy areas, but you'd need to fade them out because dog training is teaching them to deal with shit in their real life and get over their fears. Do you think police k9 dogs are bribed every time they are put through intense situations??? Also...try using your advice on reactive, aggressive dogs. I'm sure treats will get them to not fuck around with other dogs...LUL

I live in a rural area. I want my dogs to listen to me, but I don't want them to be robots. Let them run, have them cone when you ask. I'm so happy I need to put them on a leash so occasionally.

We have a female Blue Merle named Willow, and we are in love with her. She’ll be 9 months old on January 13th and a year old on April 13th (we got her at 2-3 months old). She’s a bit difficult to train (super stubborn lol), but she’s a good girl overall.
