For expatriates, buying a car is more than just a convenience; it's a symbol of their dedication to life in China and the freedom to explore its unknown terrains and cultural riches.
Expats' Untraveled Path
Driving in China brings unique problems and opportunities due to its expanding infrastructure and driving culture. Those who grasp China's underlying norms and rhythms can navigate its roadways without much difficulty, unlike the frightening narratives that typically accompany it. After four years of using public transportation and an electric scooter, I was drawn to automobile buying by the appeal of vehicular independence.
How Foreigners Own
The robust public transit network in China's megacities makes car ownership redundant for many foreigners. A car can become a luxury and an essential outside the city, providing weekend getaway. Mandarin skills and perseverance are needed to get a Chinese driver's license and negotiate the bureaucratic complexity of buying and registering an automobile.
A Sign of Stability
Car ownership in China is more than a means of transportation; it's a declaration of one's commitment to the country. It shows locals and expatriates a dedication to the community and a desire to explore China's wide landscapes and cultures.
Looking for the Perfect Ride
The rich ecosystem of China's used automobile market-from private vendors and roadside sales to 4S shops and vast car markets-makes car shopping an adventure. These channels offer a variety of options, each with its own set of considerations, from mechanic shops' integrity to huge used car markets' one-stop automotive solutions.
My search led me to consider Chinese automakers' models. From the state-owned FAW Group's compact SUV to Geely's rapidly growing line-up, enriched by its Volvo and Lotus acquisitions, to Baojun's international collaboration with General Motors and SAIC Motors, to Chery's value offerings and Jaguar Land Rover partnership. Each competitor showed how Chinese car engineering and design is changing.
My Pick: Great Wall Haval H6
I chose the 2012 Great Wall Haval H6 after my seach. It stood out among the many possibilities due to its value, comfort, design, and reliability. The negotiation, a ballet of patience and strategy, led to a purchase that made me feel accomplished and excited for the future.

Having just wrote and passed my driver's today in my small little third tier city I started looking online regarding car purchases. All my Chinese friends want me to buy new and had me second guessing myself. After watching your video I am reinforced in my belief that spending 30/50k RMB is a viable option for a good quality car. Even if sinces it's past the 6 year mark it needs to get inspected every year. It's literally once a year not a deal breaker in my opinion. Thanks for this. Regards B

Hi do you know if it's possible to buy a used car and register it under my name with only the Temporary driving permit ? i've been asking around in my city in Shaoxing province and they assured me that i can. the only downside of that is that you have to renew your driving permit every year which i don't mind tbh.

I just started driving in China recently, but I don't think I'd buy a car, renting is so cheap, whereas parking fees for your own car are huge. How do the people in China pay for a car? Avg income per person is $12k per year. These used cars are about $5-6k. As of 2019, there were 180 cars per 1000 people. Do people not need cars, or are they just out of reach for the citizens?

Unlike in the USA the CO2 emission procapital Is only 6.8 tons/year (u.s.a 14) so imagin how much higher Will It Be if every chinese have a car, so the big problem Is that people Who live in big city (which have a higher income) are limited by law (you Need to win a lottery for a licemce plate or Need to buy One on a auction) average income is 12k but you Need to know that people living in the countryside have an averege of 0 (even if It not true, they dont Need to declare It)
@WalkaboutRojo
@WalkaboutRojo 4 жыл бұрын
No, you don’t need a car in China. Ebikes and motorbikes are the most ways to get around and all the major cities (and there are many) have well designed, cheap public transportation. I still take the bus often. Cars are considered a luxury item
@WalkaboutRojo
@WalkaboutRojo 4 жыл бұрын
Only in the tier 1 cities is there a lottery for plates. My city of 3.5m was not an issue. The way around this is to buy an electric car which has a completely different plate system. Electric cars are truly the future here and the infrastructure to support them is much more developed than even in the states.

China ’s income is not so high, the average person ’s monthly income is only 3k-4kRMB ($400-$600), and the long-term factory work time will be about 4k-6kRMB ($600-$900). The income in banks or government agencies is relatively high. But the welfare part accounts for about 30%, and the actual salary is about the same as that of the factory. The cost of processing all the documents for low-end new cars usually needs to start from 100kRMB, and most people will choose loans to buy,Pay off the loan in about 3 years. Big cities do not need cars at all. Public transportation is fast and cheap. We usually choose public transportation + DIDI (DIDI = Uber, Cheaper than Uber). It is very troublesome to drive a car to find a parking space, and you will receive a high number of fines if you do not park as required. The annual income of $ 12k you mentioned is only easy to achieve in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou, the four international high-consumption and high-income cities.

@@gregnixon1296$12k a year is only an average (outdated to begin with), including millions of farmers (many of whom declare no income). The income of people in the cities is much higher. There is a huge middle class in China (bigger than the entire population of the USA), and rich people are plentiful. You see many Tesla, BMW, and other luxury cars here, much more common than I ever saw in the USA. Many people here pay for their luxury cars with cash, as credit market is not nearly as common or developed here.

Dude, NONE of these cars have a "great reputation around the world", quite the contrary, they have terrible reputations, especially Chery and Geely. sorry not sorry.

You clearly haven't seen or driven a modern Chinese car. They have improved dramatically in the past 5 years (everything changes fast here), and now many are truly world class. Scoff if you want, but don't be surprised when Chinese cars are crushing the foreign competition, you will soon see them everywhere (just as people scoffed at Japanese and Korean cars until they too crushed the European and American competition -- I'm old enough to remember).

@@goclunker That is not at all true, and hasn't been true for many years. Furthermore, the Mitsubishi engines used by older Chinese cars (including the previous model Haval H6 like his) are well regarded reliable engines, so what's your point ? Many automakers , not just Chinese, part share with other makers. Especially with EV cars (the future), China is leading the world. You do know Toyota EV tech is licensed from China brand BYD (also partners with Mercedes Benz and partly owned by Berkshire Hathaway / Warren Buffet).
