Walked Up Pheasant Shooting with Spaniels

The COT are out on our first day pheasant shooting for the 2017 / 2018 game shooting season in the UK. There are a lot of young birds about so we have to try and be a bit selective but I am desperate to get a flush, shot and retrieve for young Ted my 18 month old working cocker spaniel. This his his first time out on "the pheasants", his first ever pigeon retrieve and his first time working in thick bracken....hope you enjoy this as much as I did...Please subscribe to my channel.

Those ferns were some thick stuff for Ted, and with all the scent in his face made for a tough retrieve ...... well done to the both of you! One of my dogs was not keen on retrieving doves ...... he would do it, but he rather not for some reason .... heh heh!

Hi i was wondering how you find these days shooting and the people you shoot with? i have an old spaniel that i got when she was retired that i use for dogging in and rough shooting but is not up to being in the beating line and is getting on a bit so i have just got a new cocker spaniel pup. this will be my first time training from a puppy, any tips or training advice would be amazing, thanks Robert

Your colleagues were firing at very young pheasants in some of the video. nothing more that big poults. But good dog work as normal

Hello, I'm new to pheasant hunting and I was wondering if you have any tips on how to get a pup started. He's a decker terrier and is 4 months. He understands his basic commands but will still need refinement and I've also introduced him to pigeons and quails. So far he has the drive to seek and flush them. But as of right now I'm just winging it without a plan. If you could give me some tips such as commands or anything it would be very much appreciated!

Suggestion: Find an urban gun dog and improve his welfare by teaching the owner some activities for urban gun dogs that don't actually involve discharging firearms in a residential area. To explain: Gundogs make great housepets, but when used in this way, even with the proper amount of leashed exercise, seem to a significant percentage of the time from depression, food-obsession, obesity, and neurotic behavior. Some experts have already done research into this problem, including one who wrote a book called "Urban Gun Dogs", but they have to be taught and tailored to the limitations of the context of each individual case. For example, given a spaniel and a suburban yard no larger than say, one acre, how would you, given your experience and expertise improve the welfare of the animal with activities? What equipment would you need, and how could you teach these to owners?" It'd be a way to help dogs and their owners, and it's a huge untapped market that you'd have basically to yourself.

chrisrus1965 Thanks for your comment and your suggestion. Through my work as a dog photographer I worked with a lady called Lez Graham who wrote a series of books called “The Pet Gundog” and the book basically covers exactly what you advocate. Although all my cockers work as gundogs they are first and foremost my pets and spend most of the year and I would like to think we have found a happy balance in their wellbeing. Cheers Nick

How about videos about: * Your description and on such books and such. * You and Ted doing fun gundog stuff in the backyard, whatever gets that tail wagging. * You visiting and helping gundog owners at their homes and helping them. *You take owners and their gundogs that never been, out to the country, off leash, just for fun and to start a viral video, but also as an experiment or research.

Thanks Nick.Is the gimbal the WG3 ? Looks a game changer for GoPro in the field as we use them.Mine is a 3+Black and was not easy finding settings I was happy with as integrated with other cam footage.Really enjoy your dog work. Best JP
