Walker lake used to be great trout fishing. Water level dropped and got to alkaline to sport trout and any other game fish. So that's why it's empty all the time at the campgrounds. Used to be able busy place about 20 years ago.

Lived in Lee Vining in the 80s, Hawthorne was nearby and had a few casinos, and yea the lake had trout. Bodie was unregulated just like the beaches in So Cal. Those days were awesome. I had 2 homes on the Colorado in escrow in 2020, backed out and glad I did. Moved east to a great state, open carry and fantastic Americans who want nothing to do with how these declines happened to the west. Now, I deal with producing food for America, a productive life in retirement but enjoy these reminiscent videos for amusement and entertainment. Thanks Russ, enjoy the solitude and serenity. It's priceless. Appreciate your positive contribution for many reasons,

Walker Lake is on of the few ancient lakes in the Great Basin that still exists. At one of the stops there are signs were the water levels were over the last few hundred years. It used to be much bigger but irrigation demands over the years has caused to to shrink. There is a kind of fish in that lake that is found nowhere else. I think it's some ancient species of trout that got landlocked in the lake thousands of years ago. Salinity due to evaporation and water use has threatened the fish with extinction. It's a very interesting place to explore.

It is pretty, but the lake is dead. Prolly why there is no one there. The wind can reach hurricane levels. Just a tip for tenters. Our group had three tents destroyed. On the other side of the road, you can frequently see mountain goats. Have to watch out for them as you drive toward the army base. Nice video!

What happened to the fish?
@eshache8551
@eshache8551 Жыл бұрын
@@blueterrace people diverted the Walker river to ranch lands too heavily for too long so that the lake received no inflow for so long that the level dropped dramatically. This concentrated the alkali solutes in the water to such an extent that it became toxic to the fish. A conservation effort won water rights for the lake itself in i think 2019 but not sure how it’s going now. Gonna camp there in May on a road trip so I’m curious how it’s going.

I used to travel 95 between Vegas and Reno a lot during my working years. I hauled slots for Bally Gaming, and a few other manufactures back and forth, and loved the drive on 95! The winds can get very high and dangerous around Hawthorne! Had a UPS truck and trailer behind me blow over from a side gust just leaving Hawthorne heading north, it hit me and blew me sideways, and before I could grab the CB mic it blew him on his side! Lots of military bases out in the Nevada desert, that you never see or know about! Enjoy your trip down to Az.

I used to live in Babbitt NV right next to Hawthorne. Was old WW2 housing and now town is mostly gone. Hawthorne was nice. Base had huge indoor pool. It’s a NAD & when you look across the hills at certain times of day you can see reflection of vents in the hills. Walker was a fun lake and we enjoyed it a lot, especially when it was hot. At one time bunkers were turned over to USMC. USMC has mountain warfare training base near Bridgeport CA. When govt put in houses, double wide manufactured homes in Walker CA we were moved from Babbitt. The drive from Walker/Coleville to NV state line had pretty lake. Lake Topaz.

Did your GPS signal disappear while you were driving this area ? When we were there no one was about either, all those picnic areas and not a one them used. No trash of any kind or remains of camp fires and a complete absence of tire tracks and foot prints, not even animal tracks. A very, very quiet and spooky place in the middle of no where Nevada.

Walker River used to feed Walker lake, however the water is being used heavily for agricultural. The river rarely makes it to the lake anymore. The lake has lost so much water and there's no outlet so the water has gone alkaline. They say that all the fish have died off. Walker lake used to be a huge stop over for migratory birds, but they no longer stop as their food sources are gone. The lake is what's leftover from the ancient lake Lahontan which covered much of this part of Nevada. It will probably continue to shrink until it's eventually dry in another century.

What happened was the snow melt that flowed into Walker was diverted for agricultural use. Once that happened what little water that did enter walker never left, over the years the level of selenium reached critical levels and killed all the fish. In your video you didn’t get close to the water, had you done that you’d have found the water is mired with a noxious algae, even swimming would be unpleasant. Before the diversion of the snow melt the lake was high enough it would have water flow out to the north, that kept the chlorides low.

From Wikipedia: As of the spring of 2016, the TDS (total dissolved solids) concentration had reached 26 g/L, well above the lethal limit for most native fish species throughout much of the lake. Lahontan cutthroat trout no longer occur in the lake and recent work by researchers indicates that the lake's tui chub have disappeared.

Walker Lake is one of a few lakes left from an ancient lake that stretched generally from Walker Lake to Pyramid Lake north of Reno. Ferocious winds can occur in the area of Walker Lake and along Hwy 95. I know from 1st hand experience- a cargo trailer I was towing and a semi truck and trailer behind me were flipped from a sudden "downdraft/windshear" type of windstorm a few years ago. That whole road of 95 and 95A get shut sometimes because of high winds. A little south of Hawthorne is a nice shady rest area in the real small town of Luning. Be careful flying a drone near a major military base containing vast quantities of various types of munitions...🤫
