That's a good question. You might like this article - www.healthline.com/nutrition/walking-for-weight-loss#TOC_TITLE_HDR_4 It mentions a study done on walking and waist circumference. It also mentions the difference in calorie expenditure between walking and running. I did a similar test on myself and found that too be true for me. Very interesting!

Im averaging 17k a day but I hit 22k a little over 10miles 2 -3 times a week. I started walking daily in June its december and i have lost 70 pound just from walking and cutting soda. I definitely recommend it.

I eat a plant-exclusive diet and along with that and 20k steps a day, i lost 3 dress sizes in 6 weeks going from uk size 14 to uk size 8 US size 10 to US size 4

Good luck. There is something you should know tho my 20k steps a day were done over 3 x 1 hour walks, not just a few steps here and there. Fat is burned when we walk for at least 30 minutes at a time. Anyone just doing 20k steps everyday a few at a time will not get the same result.

I walk 10k steps a day straight thru on the treadmill at 3.5 mph. I started 6 days ago and have already lost 5 lbs. I am 62, normally sedentary and 180 lbs to start. I want to be 130 again.

After many years of running, I endured many injuries. I decided to just walk for the last two years. That's been working for me. Recently I noticed weight gain. I decided to up my steps per days, fasting and watch my calories. That the last week I have done 20k a day and noticed: more energy, loss weight, sleep longer and feel better. I want to do a full month. Normally I avg 300k-400k steps per month.

In December, 2022 I challenged myself to walk at least 20K steps a day for a month. I was able to do it but wow, it takes a lot of time, often taking much of my evening after work on top of first thing in the morning and during lunch on the majority of days. On Dec 30 I walked 35K steps and on New Years Eve I wrapped it up with 40K steps; I loved finishing strong. I have never been overweight so I did lose weight I didn't need to lose but it was worth it for all the other benefits and I certainly would recommend it to anybody who has struggled with their weight as many in my family have. In the last 4 years I had ACL reconstruction and 2 herniated discs so I was at the point I needed to alter my exercise routine; walking is a good low-impact workout.

Thank you for this video, its a motivation I started walking in 2021 from 10k steps a day now I am doing 22k average daily I do not weigh myself, I am using my clothes especially my jeans as a measure and they are almost all loose now and I am happy I have completed more than 600 miles and still going for more Thanks would love to walk 10 miles daily ie 16 km for the next 8 months and see what happens

Not weighing for too long can be trap. I ended up 5 and half stone because I did that kind of exercise a day just went by my clothes. Ended up in hospital. Couldn't gain the weight fast enough. Don't worry too much at the start or get someone you trust to check it isnt too low.

I just completed my 9th straight 20K day. This is much, much better for my 42 yo body than working out hard for one hour per day and then not much else. I haven't even been sore yet. Getting in at least 2500 steps before breakfast seems to help me start the day with momentum. I do 11 or 12K of my steps with no shoes, and the rest with minimalist shoes.

@@lecahier No shoes indoor and outdoor! But at work, I gotta wear em. I don't really like any of the minimalist shoes. I bought a pair of Xeros last time, and I don't recommend them. Sorry to be of no help.

@@jamesj9744 I appreciate your reply! My doctor recommended barefoot shoes and I tried on Xero, merell, and vivo. None really felt right so I guess the search continues. I am also debating going completely barefoot somewhere clean outdoors just to start re-training my feet.

I usually walk 10k steps a day but I am going to walk about 20k to step it up a notch now that I am 50! 20k a day will help me feel better!

@@jayden3759 it went surprisingly well, the first 60k went by very easy. after 70k the struggle started and the last 10k was brutal. The next day I couldn't really walk all that much anymore haha. It did help a lot that on the last part a friend joined me. It took me around 16 hours to complete.

Walking is all around amazing for everyone and many health reasons. I know its not as good as getting outside and actually walking, but I walk in place at my desk at work or if I am at home I use my treadmill with lap top mount or just march in place at home with my lap top on a shelf or something. I aim for 15k a day on my fitbit. I put my fitbit around my ankle so it can count the steps since my hands are typing on my computer. At first I was shy of what people in the office thought but I do not care any more. If its nice outside I will take my little kids on a walk with the baby in the stroller after work, Walking has been my old faithful when it comes to losing weight its the really the only thing I always stay consistent with.

Megan, thank you so much for this comment!! It means so much to me and hopefully others. How inspiring!! Having the attitude of "I do not care any more" is something I go in and out of, but really need to just embrace (especially when it comes to things like walking that are so good for me).

@@jayden3759 kind of fell off this month has to move and now where I live there's like No real private place to do it.... I'm older 51 so you know it's not advisable walking in the public. Have to find a more private place to walk, can't go to a gym cause I'll pick up beef with everyone there....lloll... So? I may walk at night on the beach in Miami beach on the sand.....

20k is a lot to walk in a day, I find 15k a day to be a bit too much for me time-wise. I can walk 20k a day, it just takes up too much of my time and I can't keep it up in the long run so I have settled for around 12k a day which seems to be doable without spending all my free time walking.

Awesome! It depends on your current physical fitness, mental attitude, and schedule. You'll have to judge for yourself. To me, the most important thing was setting myself up for success and I break that down in that video. Keep me updated on if you do it or not!

I dont count my steps but I have been walking 10 hours a day. My feet hurt by the end of it but when I wake up they are fine.

@@EileenHer In a big loop around my neighborhood. They would hurt slightly until i went to sleep and woke up. I was laid off with nothing else to do. It was enjoyable though.

@@timeandtideplans how are you doing now are you still walking or have you gotten back to walking after this video like you said it's gone downhill? I was walking so so much in Michigan. I moved back to New York in June and I think I might have hit 15,000 steps five or six times since July and over 20,000 only once currently I'm lucky I get $10,000 but I have started to gain weight and I'm not going to let it happen used to be 218 lb went down to 128 lb and I'm now somewhere around 148 lb. Going the wrong way but I don't know quite why. Been seeing dietitian lately again and trying very hard to keep myself active

Ive realised if i walk to and from uni would be the perfect way to add 20 k steps to my day😅 Used to wake up to excercise before school but since i started uni i just havent had the motivation to get up and get ready twice (first for workout then for the day) so i just havent done it. Now i just need go get up earlier and just leave. So far its been good, i will do my best to keep it going. Lost a couple of kg so far but i think that its just been water weight so far so im excited for the real results

That calorie count is way off, 20k steps burns about 1000 to 1200 calories unless you weigh like 300lbs

I am 65 I used to walk 10,000. Since Covid I barely walk. Except grocery shopping. I don’t know how to motivate myself. What KZbin do you watch to walk 20k. Pls help. I want to improve my health. Thank you❤

10k done consistently is so many steps! I used to watch any and all vlogs of people living their lives getting in their steps. My favorite was with a man who walked around a Walmart at night, or similar store, when it was raining outside. I thought that was inspiring. Would it be better for me to start with 10K first? Or just go straight into 20K? I noticed a lot of times my desk job and throughout the day, I have around 3k steps.

One helpful activity I did last year was to track my time - I recorded in a day planner exactly what I was doing and how long it took all day. You would want to create a realistic goal. Some days 20k steps is just not possible for me based on what I need to accomplish in other areas of my life. If you record your time you can see where you have pockets during the day to get up and walk during work, if you have time in the morning and where you might be able to replace a stationary activity with an active one. Test it out for a week and then set your goal. I wanted mine challenging, but something I could realistically do. My least favorite feeling is not being able to finish something I start. Also- figure out how long it takes you to reach a certain step count and how fast you have to walk. I made another video about doing a 30k day and how I had worked out the math on all of it. I’ll link it here too ❤️

I tried going from 3 k to 15 k steps and my knees and ankles got so sore that I completely stopped walking for a few months until it finally stopped hurting. Now I do 500 steps every hour (6 minutes). It hurt a little bit at the end of the day for the first 3 days then improved from there. Planning to add 30 min walks now that my body can handle the strain better. My goal is to get to 20k a day incorporating short and long walks

I did a hour a day walking it's supposed to be for 30 days next Sunday will be my 30-day. I haven't lost a pound it just kept me at the same weight. Now I'm going to try to 20000 steps a day see how that works.

Do what works for you -- I have another video where I did a challenge over 48 hours and tracked my calorie output, steps, mileage, and time depending on where and how I walked. One hour of walking is only like 6000-7000 steps for most people. That’s enough to promote good health, but not enough for weight loss, especially if your diet isn’t in check.

I planned this in February 2020. Our state locked down mid-March 2020. I lived in a rural area. If you watched my video and the pictures I shared it’s just me outside. I felt weird towards the end of March not because I was around people, but because I was self-conscious of my neighbors thinking I was irresponsible looking outside their windows. I was never near anyone outside of our house and outside soaking up some vitamin D, and ensuring my mental fitness was strong to help my family through everything ❤️❤️

@@timeandtideplans that was my point - you said you felt bad being outside and walked in your house, but you were in no danger of Covid outside alone. If your neighbors judged you, then it's because they lost the ability to think rationally. But I do get that! Thanks for clarifying. Enjoyed your video.

Absolutely! I'll do a better job of compiling, but here are a few I used before I started: - kzbin.info/www/bejne/eaLRn6aujtBrmKc&t (Autumn Bates has a few videos that reinforce the idea that walking is good for you and effective) - I set a Google alert for walking studies and articles that came out that again reinforced the idea that I could use it as a tool - kzbin.info my kids crack up at her "walk walk walk walk" - This channel was my favorite kzbin.info/door/3wm6Rex4kcvOVpqxNHeAqg (anything that made getting in extra steps especially indoors was an awesome resource to start with) - look up "walking for weight loss transformation" videos on KZbin (this was a good one to get me excited - also look up blog posts) ** Hope this helps! **

I like your video.. You did walk on time or different... like 10000 in morning other 10000 in night... then you just do on 1 time 20000 steps means 3 hrs continue walk? Its true?

Thank you!! I would walk about 8,000 outside in the morning and another 4-6,000 in the late afternoon with the rest of my steps done being active around my house or doing "steps" indoors to music or to a KZbin video. This was done throughout the day, which was important to me.

I LOVE a long walk, especially when it's outside. My 20k/day in 2020 varied each day. Some days I did a little all day long. Other days I was lazy all morning and had to pump out the steps in bigger chunks in the afternoon/evening.

That's a great question! It varied day by day. Some days I wouldn't start working towards my steps until the afternoon and I would be going until midnight. Others would be an hour walk in the morning, one at lunch, and one after dinner while being mindful of being active in my every day activities. I have a video on how I planned out a 30k video. I’m at 10 miles a day too!! Are you still doing this? It has changed my life and your body gets used to it. But I do have blisters right now, so if anyone has any tips on that, I’m all ears:)

That is SO awesome!!! 10 miles! I have not been consistent over the years, but 20k days are magical. My blisters just healed over from a few weeks ago - I don’t often get them! This was from wearing different socks of all things. Maybe someone else has some anti-blister advice for you.

Try walking on grass or rubberized track, it's much easier on your joints and feet. You walk this much on concrete for years and you'll need new hips or knees eventually

That's up to you and a qualified trainer/nutritionist to work out. My 20k mark was based on what was realistic, but still a challenge for me to do. I used my Fitbit as I went on to see data on how many calories I burned depending on the type of steps I was doing. I found that walking 10k steps at home versus up and down stairs at the park demanded a different level of energy from my body.

That’s too much weight to lose in too short a time period. It’s really bad for you and it will likely all come back. Better to do it slowly and not need to continue losing the same kilos over and over again. If you have doubled your step count and don’t overeat to compensate you will lose weight. Good luck.

Hai, I somehow need to bind a goal to my steps. Where do i go to. I find it difficult to walk just because of walking and loose 2 hours a day doing this. Would love a kind of direction/ goal or benefit to the steps. I live in a bussy centre of the city. Do you have goals or how do you help yourself keeping motivated..???

Thank you so much for bringing this up -- we moved onto a boat and travel a lot now. I'm finding it much harder to get in steps or just activity being in a small space, etc. I'd really love to tackle the idea of how to stay motivated. My goal for the walking period in this video was to improve my health, primarily through weight loss and overall wellbeing. Last year my walking goals was more about stress relief. We were moving and walking an hour in the morning and after dinner allowed me the space to think. When I was most successful with sticking to walking I gamified it. I used Fitbit, shared my results on Instagram to keep me accountable, and tracked my steps in my planner each day. I want to explore this idea in the next month - thank you so much for the comment. I wish you the best in finding the time to walk (if that's something you really want to do)!

Ouch! I didn’t have to deal with blisters - probably since my shoes were so old and worn in! I also walked a lot indoors around the house with no shoes on.

2 miles outside for me is about 4,000 steps. I can do 2 miles walking with elevation change in about 30 minutes. I have a planning video on my walking time cheat sheet kzbin.info/www/bejne/iX2mpGN6fbimbNE 10 minutes walking in place in doors gives me just over 1,000. Knowing how long it takes to get those steps in is so important if you have a step goal. For example, my assumption at the time was that I was way more active at work than I actually was. That was a wake up call when it came to my time management. Having some form of pedometer whether it’s on a watch or just something you clip on you as you walk is such a helpful tool as you go about your day. I really enjoy collecting data on myself and having sun with those numbers 🥰

Hi there, what was your walking pace? I have been walking for two years now, except when winter comes like the motivation to want to do any kind of excersice is gone, buuuut when I do walk, I walk at a somewhat fast pace, and I start getting calluses on my big toe, was your walking pace, well of course more than like a "browsing" walk.

Walking is amazing for health and weight loss the secret is you need to raise your heart rate get the lungs 🫁 working walk at a brisk pace and use inclines start with 10,000 steps a day aim for 20,000 a day once you get used to the 10,000

Wow, so awesome! I’m working my way back up to 10k a day and feel like that’s a lot some days. 🙃 You’re so lucky to live in beautiful WA state! I lived in Seattle for 15 years and loved it sooooo much! It’s a gorgeous place and perfect for walking year-round (even in the rain). I never walked as much as I did when I lived there.

Ur 20000 steps is 2700 calories and my 20000 is just over 1300 calories. And I weigh 100kg. What is wrong?

Good question. How are you measuring your calorie output? How many calories do you burn with little to no activity? What’s the difference between no activity and 20,000 steps? My personal no activity calorie burn is around 1,400 calories according to my Fitbit. My calorie burn for 20k steps varied by a couple hundred depending on if I was walking up hills outdoors or walking in place at my home. I used Fitbit to monitor my calories, steps, mileage, etc.

A lot of people think Fitbit grossly over-estimates calorie burn because they don't realize it includes everything in the daily calorie burn, not just exercise. I've read posts by people who say things like, "I just woke up and my Fitbit says I've already burned 800 calories today. What a joke!" Or something like that, because they didn't realize Fitbit tracks calories burned just by being alive! Anyways, 1300 calories burned for 20k steps sounds about right for someone who weighs 100kg, just for the exercise part. You should easily be burning 3000+ calories a day with the exercise combined with other typical expenditures, up to and including your heart pumping, lungs working, etc. 😅

A person expends calories by just being alive - I burn 1600 calories a day "at rest" - that means sitting most of the day, sleeping, etc. You would then add on your "active calories" to that total, so for example the 1000 you mentioned, giving you a daily calorie burn of 2,600. On top of my "at rest" calories, my "active calories" vary depending on the activity I'm engaged in. Walking calories vary depending on incline and speed I'm walking at. The numbers are real 🤷‍♀️ Hope that helps.

Not going to read all the other replies, but my take away from walking a lot is, a, if you can't do it you are mentally weak, b, doing it for weight loss not going to work, c, calorie counters on step trackers are way off, d, all the things she talks about facetime etc, you are on a stroll, not a walk, a walk is 4 to 4.5 mph

It doesn't hurt you tho, this is the key to quick weight loss. You literally burn an extra 7,000 calories a week. That's 2 pounds of fat, even if you don't change your diet

20000 steps a day is about 10-14 km. You are short person so rather 10km. It gives us 6miles a day and 600-700ccal. Conclusion: False in first minute of film.

Interesting math here, but I think her math/fitbit gives a better answer than you guessing math. Also I went 30k steps today and it was 12 miles and it isn’t the end of the day and I’m already at 2,800 calories burned (for the day total not just from walking)...so once again interesting math sir.

I think you are correct if you count only the steps calories. That’s what my app is estimating for my 20,000. However maybe her watch is super fancy and counts everything she does? Like the calories she burns just to be alive together with the steps?

​@@MsKassandraKotaku There is no watch in the world that can accurately predict calories burned. It's nothing but an algorithm based on steps and heart rate. Steps on fitbits are calculated by an average stride, to which you'd have to adjust up or down depending on your own. Heart rates factors are irrelevant because the watch doesn't know if you're walking, jogging, running, and what your cardiovascular health is. The fitbit doesn't know your metabolism or your diet. It's absurd to rely on a watch or even a generic formula to know how many calories you've been. The reality is, there is no truly accurate way of knowing. It's a very loose estimation and can be vary as much as hundreds calories.
