Yes same here 5th metatarsal fracture, ended up having surgery to insert a screw also, 3rd n 4th metatarsal fracture, and doing ultra sound bone healing treatments 2x a day and now started therapy, I can weight bear some and movements have got better, thank you for detail explanation on being scared, bc that I am I can't take a step yet but I know it will happen, I havent walked since June 8th, and it's Oct 31st. So I'm so ready in my mind but the just of doing it making my mind and body 😩 it's hard im scared I'm gonna hurt it again. So the way you described everything makes so much sense. When I am trying to walk with thw walker I have to really think about how it feels and all so I am putting some weight through my foot parcially if not I will hop or just touch enough to walk and use my arms mostly and that is super tiring. I've been on a knee scooter for the entire time so that I could actually do chores and everything that needed done. So I'm really reliable for the scooter. I will get there but I totally know it's a process, alot of people think tou can be able to just walk but I am proof of that. It's a process you have to get through with your body and mind agreeing... and I will soon get there. Thank you so much for the way you showed and told us how to try and overcome this transition. ❤🎉😊 I'm hoping to walk by Thanksgiving. We shall see ❤

I appreciate this because my physical therapist wasn’t telling me about the mindset in my recovery plan. He just told me to “do this exercise (like a heel raise)”, while giving me pointers. I was just released from the hospital after being diagnosed with Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis with acquired cerebral ataxia and peripheral neuropathy (drop foot was extra😅) This video helped me understand what my brain was doing. So I still use the crutch, more for moral support and also because I know pain and fear combined can cause more injuries. So just want to say it;s getting better each day, I am trying to overcome the fear one at a time each day, and walking with my arm crutch for 25 minutes 4 times a week. Plus daily self-physio. Hang in there. It will get better I promise.

I tore my deltoid last May and was out for the entire summer. I ended up starting aqua jogging/walking with water dumbells. The water walking was in a circular lazy river. I had used it many times to get a great anaerobic load from it, due to the ability to maintain time under tension and no compression. I ended up rolling my OTHER ankle, and now the ankle I had torn deltoid with is 1.5x as stable feeling, I have lost pro-prioception/mind muscle with my left ankle due to physical rehab neglect when doing band work initially. Ooof. Thanks for this video! I herniated my l5-s1 at 27 and now my right ankle apparently has loose bodies in it from wear and tear. I am too young for this! Aqua therapy saved me.

I've just had my cast removed after 8 weeks of non weight bearing due to a trimalleolar fracture with surgery.....and it's a scary place😢 I am now in a boot and have an appointment for physio in just over a weeks time. As you quite rightly said, the transition to walking again is difficult so this video has really helped me to understand this process ❤

Thank you for this video - recent ankle replacement. Was told to go to one cane or crutch -50% wt bearing. Leaped at using a crutch - how much less cumbersome. But as I went to full, could not walk without a hitch /limp. PT said to strengthen my hip. That didn't really seem to be the whole problem. Watched your video - went back to crutches -even without bearing wt on them - HUGE difference. Will go back to crutches for relearning my center point. Yrs of pain on right foot then surgery makes me think my brain needs lots of retraining as well as my body. Thank you - I now have hope!!

I fractured 5th metatarsal at base so called avulsion fracture. Last Friday, after two months, doc said bone is making an union, so i can start getting out of the boot, and walk gradually. I was overly excited, and started walking a lot. The injured foot started hurting again no bruise or swollen though. The last part of this video is very helpful. Key takeaway for me is to put weight on the injured foot slowly and with assistance having brain realize the motion details, and feel it. Thank you!

Age 55. Trimaleolar fracture dec 17, surgery and hardware installed dec 19, cast removed Jan 5 and staples (36) removed. Waited a week+ for sutures and staple holes to heel and started swim/pool work myself Jan 15. Consisting of a mix of water running, water polo drills, swimming (50m), building various exercises like calf/foot rolls, squats, walking in water starting at shoulder depth and progressing to waist depth after 10 sessions (on top of exercises in desk chair at work and home). 6 weeks post surgery was Jan 30 and official 6 week check up for x-rays and evaluation is Feb 2 for official go-ahead for weight bearing (I have started with air cast over a week ago and can walk well in the air cast but only do so with knee scooter close by getting to pool from car is on knee scooter down to bleacher, swim suit under sweat pants and swim parka, so just take off air cast and sweat pants on bleacher and crawl on my but the 10 feet to the deep end).

Feb 14 update, can walk easily with air cast going on 3 weeks, if it is icy will use a cane for stability. Can walk without air cast at home but only do so when doing physio. Plantar flexion is almost as good as the right ankle, dorsal flexion still working on, I feel this when lunging my right foot forward (I only do this in chest deep water at this point). Cannot turn my left foot in as far as my right yet. I can do breast stroke kick though with a bit of force, could keep up with freestylers doing my breaststroke for a set of 100s.

March 5 - 10 weeks following my trimaleolar fracture surgery. Since my last update I had been only using the Air Cast/walking cast at work. At home I had not been using it. This week I have been walking around with regular hiking boots. Walking is good. I can support weight and balance on the damaged left ankle (even raising my right leg), of course balance is not as good as the right unbroken ankle. The difference is most noticeable when doing lunges, specifically when I lunge with the right foot. Anyway, I have another month for my 3 month check-up so I will continue doing my workouts and hopefully the Dr will give me good news and allow some jogging. With my fracture my fibula was completely broken at an angle, on that I have multiple plates with 5 screws holding them in. On the tibia, most trimaleolar fractures I have seen on KZbin have 1 or 2 long screws holding the tibial fracture, I had multiple so I have plates with 6 screws holding them, and the rear of my tibia was also fractured so I have another screw there holding the back.

@stephenmorris2726 Thank you for the updates. Same..Trimalleolar fractures on January 26, surgery was Feb 2nd. I've been in this cast , my heel and foot hurt on a 4 level, my ankle hurting more recently. Tomorrow March 11th, xray possible removal of cast and into a walking boot. I am scared to death. My toes have been tingling since this happened and had to move my toes. Worried we we start the walking boot I am going to make thing worse.. Good luck on your recovery.
@stephenmorris27268 ай бұрын
@@madelynkelly5777 Good luck - a little longer in the surgery cast but different surgeons have different approaches. I know with mine the 2 weeks post surgery I had the swelling go down in my ankle and my calf had atrophied quite a bit so my cast was very loose - I probably could have slid out of it like a boot. The best piece of equipment I used was a knee scooter. In terms of therapy if you have a facility that offers water therapy try that. I went to the water very quickly but I am a swimmer/water polo/triathlete and I have a great deal of personal aquatic therapy experience from decades ago that is another story. In terms of the air cast - get the taller one. That will have more support. I did get a second ankle one, mainly for my bike on my bike trainer, but I found the ankle air cast was not as good as the taller one.
@stephenmorris27268 ай бұрын
@@madelynkelly5777 Good luck on your recovery. In terms of the tingling, I also had tingling toes, ankle foot. That is normal with the swelling, as the swelling goes down it gets better. It seems that most of the videos I have seen with people that have this injury the dorsal flexión seems to be the hardest to get back. And that is needed to go down stairs, walk etc. My surgeon did say he had to remove damaged cartilage, which has been my biggest concern since I woke up after the surgery.

6 weeks post op on a displaced (and smashed) 5th metatarsal today. My cast has come off, replaced with a moon boot. My surgeon says I can put a "little weight" on it here and there but not walk on it as yet. I came here looking for exercises that I can do whilst not yet walking but to prepare myself for walking soon hopefully. In your first seated exercise I noticed the range of movement of my ankle (not injured) has been limited by the 6 weeks in a cast, so I guess I have found my starting point. Thank you.

Needed this. Broke lateral malleolus, had a plate in, was told likely weight bear after 8wks, but when they took my 2nd cast off after 4wks, my incision had opened partially. They didn't put a cast back on and no walking boot for a week to monitor, then when I went back, the incision was better, and they just said move on with starting to weight bear 25%, no boot no nothing. VERY apprehensive at 5.5wks post OP! Looking forward to starting physio though and getting on with recovery.

I’m on crutches at the moment due to a 13ft fall, which I snapped my heel bone , I’m suppose to be on them for about 15 to 18 weeks . I wear an air cast boot throughout the day. I tend to walk with my foot pointed forward and downwards when I’m not wearing the boot. The doctor said that I’m not to move my foot at all. I remember snapping my wrist after a fall. My hand and arm was put in a plaster cast with my fingers exposed. I was wriggling my fingers, when the nurse said, don’t move them, otherwise you can injure yourself even more. When they finally took the cast off, I couldn’t straighten my fingers. The doctor told me I should’ve wriggled them around. It took me a long time with therapy to straighten them up again. But even now they’re not perfectly straight, compared with the good hand. I’m afraid I’m going to have the same problem with my ankle. I’m glad I found your video 👍👍👍

Hi Maryke, I twisted my ankle on November 16 while playing football. I thought it was a ligament sprain and rested wearing a bandage for 2-3 weeks gradually bearing weight . I was able to walk and do everything normally with slight pain in my ligaments after 4 weeks from injury but the swelling was still there so i took an x-ray where i got to know i had a hairline fracture in my lower 1/3rd of fibula. I wore a POP cast on Dec 12th and i removed it after 3 weeks , i was able to walk with little pain and discomfort . I took the x-ray again , found out that the fracture is not yet healed and the doctor asked me to wear the cast again for 3 weeks . Last week (Jan 22nd) I removed the cast and the doctor said the fracture is healed but i was experiencing severe pain just to land my foot , he said its because of the stiffness due to immobilozation and it will reduce over a week .I did small exercises for the past one week but now also I am not able to bear weight. It's like the small improvement i feel while doing exercises one day is completely gone when i wake up the next day. Can you please share your thoughts and recommendations?
