Beau I have a piece of pottery I found here in GA with the cuts in it, they we're definitely done after firing, most likely after the vessel broke, and the shards were used as abraders for stone tools. Robert Bray in the Missouri Archaeologist, Vol. 24, says they were used as a stopgap measure when abrader-quality sandstone was unavailable. Pretty interesting, I've used concrete for the same when flintknapping.

Anthropology student here. The lines are ‘cord’ marks. Natives would wrap cords around wood, and smack the wet clay with them. This made grooves for tying the pottery up, and or making them easier to hold. Essentially putting grooves on them for holding. Also, they were decorative too as your friend stated. Nice video Beau. Been a long time fan, and while I love the metal detecting videos I always love when you go eyeballing for arrowheads or other non-metal artifacts. God bless and take care my friend

Clay was gatherd from the river bank and mixed with a binding such as crushed shell and certain types of crushed rock usually valcanic in nature such as granite etc to prevent shrinkage of the clay. One the clay was formed into thier pots etc. And totally dry. They would fire the pots in a bed of coals. Some of the pots if not totally dry would crack and or break. And be disscarded or recrushed and added to the next batch of clay to prevent shrinkage before they fired it. And thier has been as far as i know no know record of any broken pottery being sharpenend into a blade of any sort.

Im from Maine and I am curious if you have ever heard of "Whale Back" State Park it is the same group of Indigenous peoples that were on that beach here except they were responsible for hundreds of acres of oyster shells. Im telling you there were mountains of old discarded shells. A whole town was built on them several hundred tons of shells were shipped out for cement as supplement for limestone.

Cool place, Beau! Love it. Not sure how or why you didn't bring along a metal detector. ; [ You're probably saying to yourself, Whyyyeeeee? Wish we didn't have to wait for you to go back to detect that area. Looks to be a wealth of secret treasure there. I would've collected pottery pieces with different designs on them. If you're gonna keep one, you might as well display a variation of designs. On the (bark?) I'm thinkin' it may be some kind of leather (skin of a Giant? Skin of a big ol' Dragon? Hmm? Blackbeard?) I have found (bark?) like you found, but not saturated with water and super tough and hard, even found some resembling the piece you kept, when I picked it up it had too much weight for it's size and when hit upon a rock rang out like metal, yet the texture of it was unlike metal. : l Some pieces even have what appears to be round buttons/rivets of some sort, like they use to fasten leather purses or for holding metal bridges and other structures together. : )
@louisaziz12354 жыл бұрын
If you think that might be leather, let it dry out for a few days. Then softly rub mink oil into it several times. The result should give you the answer.

@Jon Doe very nice observation. And you are correct. It never loses its smell. If it is asphaltum for arrow head etc hafting it has a terpentine kinda smell but even after hundreds of years will have a burnt wood like smell. Poke a red hot needle into it and smell the smoke. If pine smell jon doe hit the nail on the head.🙂👍

Why did you drop the agate? This was probably used to make arrow-heads. Always gather rocks that are not native to an area, it means it was probably brought in by the Indians as they traveled. That nice etched piece of pottery you left behind made me tear up. If they are not collected and preserved, they are lost to history forever, Beau, you of all folks know that. Beautiful place and some great finds but I was a tad disappointed in you this time, naughty Beau.
