Good morning Mr. Aquachigger! I just wanted to say thank you so much for sharing your love of US History, and taking us along on all of your adventures. I'm glad you're able to get back in the river finally! Anyway, thanks again for dedicating so much of your time and money towards educating the public on so many interesting items and tidbits from our past! I'd love to be able to spend a day with you, just talking about the Civil War and picking your brain. You sir, are a good man!

That my good friends is a toe bitter Belostomatidae is a family of freshwater hemipteran insects known as giant water bugs or colloquially as toe-biters, Indian toe-biters, electric-light bugs, alligator ticks, or alligator fleas. They are the largest insects in the order Hemiptera. You can temporarily direct a river to un-cloud your area by using ten poles with fabric tied to them (think fishing net, but with fabric). I have done this many times and it works really nice when you're searching through muddy water. You stake the poles in a diagonal to your spot of need to create a choke point. Doesn't need to be deep (as in the fabric doesn't need to reach the bottom) but you need at least 3 meters of it. It's easily stored in a tube along with the poles.

The story behind that canteen Albert Nathan Bedford a soldier fighting for the Confederate States, was sent down to the river to fetch a bucket of water. While at the river's edge he retrieved his own canteen to fill. When he hears talking coming from the other bank of the river. He looks up in disbelief to see three union soldiers, about the same time a shot rings out landing only inches away. His heart is racing like a rabbit as he drops his canteen and reaches for his pistol getting off a shot. A second shot is heard striking the pale water. Trying to get up the slick muddy bank he takes refuge behind a large elm tree. Taking careful aim he pulls the trigger only to hear a click dang misfire. At this time the union gun fire sounds like a fourth of july celebration with the old Elm taking the brunt of the hits. At that moment he thought I must get back to camp and warn the others. As he makes it to the crest of the bank he is greeted by a couple of guys from his regiment. He makes it out of that skirmish to tell the tale, how a canteen of water just about cost him is life to six wide eyed grandchildren sitting cross legged on a farm porch in rural Alabama. With the youngest Nate named after him pulling on his shirttail. Papa tell us another one.
