Yeah, even the towns tell people not to feed the deers. There’s signs at some beaches on Long Island about how many deer were killed by cars, and feeding can lead to that cause they get too comfy with human presence. You don’t feed them, plus as the other person said Lyme disease risk is REALLY high in this area. Lots of ticks that you don’t want

That was a nice walk AK. Things to remember re Fire Island. Yes, it is expensive and exclusive. Nobody who goes there cares the slightest that it may cost $20 before you get off the boat. Second, it is so much better to be there with a group of friends who either own or rent a place together because the social scene tends to be cliquish and somewhat closed. Nobody will be rude but people tend to socialize within their group or interact with other groups from their home group base. Third, although not required you will have a much better experience if you are gay or at least bi. Its called Fire Island because if you look at the island from Long Island at dawn it can look like its on fire. At dusk Long Island can look like its on fire looking from Fire Island. As usual you addressed this walk with sensitivity and aplomb. You are a class act and that is why so many like you so much.

A great video, I have walked those boardwalks many times. I made my first trip there in 1980 and made memories I'll never lose. However, 20 years ago now I moved to the Ft. Lauderdale area for the climate. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Maybe by now you know there is a jitney that meets the trains and takes travelers to the ferry dock. BTW, it is called Fire Island because fires were lit there to warn ships traversing the area.

Hi Doug. I grew up in Huntington LI, and I was told by many people 'Fire Island' got it's name as the Revolution Americans built fires on it to deceive the British ships during our war. The Brits were aware of this sand bar, uninhibited. The fires confused them, and many ships crashed, thinking it was LI or NYC.

It's a long string of towns, each one with a distinct character, many all families, with long stretches of park land in between the settlements where it is forbidden to build. Most of the towns have their own ferry from Long Island, but you can also take water taxis to go from town to town. Walkig is for the very hardy!

As you get toward the western end of Fire Island Pines you'll notice plenty of Pitch Pine trees. Then the last part, that's my favorite, classic sugar sand experience, yes its exhausting hiking in that kind of environment but that's what its like in the Pine Barrens. That's a desert area you were in, looks like the salt spray from Isaias even affected the Pitch Pines, usually they're tolerant to salt spray except in extreme cases. Like most trees through they should recover, hopefully. The cool thing about Fire Island is all the boardwalks and not many roads, its like having houses in a nature preserve.

Have been on Fire Island several times. Your video makes it look better than reality. What is amazing is the "wealth" - houses, boats. Makes you wonder. Thanks for the vicarious experience. Brooklyn born and recent transport from Long Island to Georgia. I do feel you overdo your videos; take a break. The walking narrated are better than the cycling. On the cycling, you take chances and disregard traffic rules like Stop signs. Blessings.

Was it safe to go there in lieu of Covid 19? What an amazing legacy that place is. So many LGBT Icons have vacationed there. Halston (RIP), Jerome Robbins & his Companion Jesse Gerstien (RIP) who died of AIDS, I think The Designer Bill Blass also spent time there as did Calvin Klein at his First "Male" Weekend in 1970 courtesy of his former Mentor Chester Weinberg who also lost his life to AIDS. I also think Steve Rubell also had a Home there as well for weekend fun.

Nice to know that it was not too difficult to get there via public transportation from Astoria. Its a little small hidden gem in the tri state area that most are not aware of. I'm sure you heard a lot of stories about Fire Island. I used to go to that beach quite years ago. I had a friend that had a house there. Fire Island is the mecca of freedom and sex you used to do a lot of stuff there. Besides, the beach was divided into the regular beach and a nude beach. Crazy things you can see there, especially in the mangroves that place was the sexual encounter for the people that were looking for crazy sex. Terrifying situation there. But I bet you heard these stories. Fire Island, a place with very bizarre stories.

What if you live there how are you supposed to get there and around without paying? As soon as it started I saw the flags thanks for finding it for me. Fyi the reason it's awesome is the community that typically lives there they tend to be very wealthy and as you travel the US you will see a pattern of how the community in generally looks no matter where your at in the US. Wow now I'm wondering a ton of other question like are the homes there only for purchase and no rental homes usually areas like this only way to stay overnight in the heart of community is to purchase a home no renal properties except hotels. Other q question how much is a home on fire Island? I think if I move to NYC I just found my new home, your friends don't want to pay $20 to come to your house lol. How long did it take to get to the island? I love this place dude. At the timeline 18:45 at the harbor you realize there was a snake in the boardwalk across from the Orange tugboat and boat with tan cover. Snake is on the left of boardwalk. How does emergency vehicles get to people's houses that are in the middle of boardwalks? It's so strange.

You weren't kidding about the gay community there. Good to know. I've been in NYC a few times, and I wanted to go to Fire Island for the national seashore, but I had no idea about the gay community. At least now I know what to expect when I finally do get to go.

Are you able to walk the entire length on the beach, or are there sections that are private?

This is not NYC. The breach actually is beneficial to the environment. It allows oxygenated and nutrient rich water to flow between the bay and ocean. It also allows wildlife to pass through.

I haven't been to The Pines in so long. It's for the gay community the pines is wealthy as compared to Cherry Grove which has money but it's more for the everyday person and it's also gay where you can be yourself and not have to put up with heterosexuals shoving it down our throats. I went there every summer when I was younger also in the pines ATM machines only distribute $100 bills. One summer we even took a sea plane.

Its shocking to me that so many of the commenters are unaware of Fire Island being one of the gayest places on earth and the walk that you took blissfully unaware IS the cruisiest place on the planet for many men over the last few decades. Like Provincetown and Palm Springs these were and are havens for GLBTQ+ people to come to for a variety of reasons like safety and community, and I can totally understand the lady asking you to not film. In that area I'm surprised that more people didn't ask you not to film. Maybe that's a good thing. I think back in the day they would have as it would have been an unwritten no no to do so. Nice casual walk. I admit a wee giggle when you walked by and area or two that probably has seen more orgiastic sex than one could comprehend with a " oh that looks like a natural area...Ill go this way" hilarious because you are innocently unaware. There's a great video on Netflix about Cherry Grove that gives more insight.

Excellent video quality and coverage of the area. Too bad you felt the need to talk the entire time, pointing out the obvious and speculating (often incorrectly). Would’ve been helpful if you’d done a little research prior to all that yapping about nonsense.
