What is Selebi-Phikwe like?
Selebi-Phikwe is a small mining town in Central East of Botswana. The town has seen devastating economic repercussions when the Mine closed in 2006 making ~5000 people unemployed.
There is hope of life as a new company as bought some assets of the Mine and hope to resume production in the near future.
I was born and raised in this town. My family still lives here so the town and its people are dear to me.
#botswana #gaborone #africa #cbd
Join me as I walk through the town centre (downtown).

Greetings from Washington, D.C. Thanks for this video. I lived in Phikwe in 1975. I did not recognize ANYTHING until the end when I could see the mine off in the distance. So many cars! So many shops and paved roads! To say it has changed is a great understatement!

Botswana is incredibly serene and a disciplined country worth visiting. Wish countries as Nigeria and Ghana would emulate the vision and rule of law prevalent in Botswana. These are all British colonies and it is quite tragic to see the trailblazers now the retrogressive bunch, plagued by corruption, visionlessness, lawlessness and impunity to steal from their own poor citizens.

Wow, thanks for sharing your beautiful vlog of Selebi Phikwe 🇧🇼! I last visited in early 90’s when my late sis was Manageress at Cresta Bosele, down the southern end of the old mall . We stayed in an apartment of what used to be the Main Mall above a pharmacy and if I recall well , a Sandys butcher below us! I could hardly remember anything at the start of the vlog as all those shops and Malls along that street are all new and there was virtually nothing along that street! The only place I sort of recognised was a service station near the Civic Centre and that’s about all! I could remember the Coop and that street along the bus rank which hasn’t changed much! The sleepy mining town has really developed and perhaps twentyfold as it used to be and there’s so much traffic and even traffic lights that ne’er used to be there…❤️❤️❤️! Think I remember the old Post Office, and that Sefalana, I’m sure that used to be the Coop and Absa used to Stanchart! I could see the apartments where we used to stay on the old side of the Mall above what used to Sandys Butcher and thr pharmacy and I could vividly remember the town council offices and the statue of Sir Tseretse Khama ❤❤❤!
@walkonwalkon
@walkonwalkon 2 ай бұрын
Yes the town has seen some changes since the 90's. Different shops compared to back then. Sandys butcher has since closed. You are right about Sefalana used to be Coop and ABSA actually used to be Barclays Bank. It is such a relaxed small town. I'm glad i could bring back some memorie🙏🏿 Thank you very much for watching 🙏🏿

Kenyan here. Went to school at morula school in phikwe as a kid, The place had a lot of trees and it seems all are gone, a lot of white people were there those days. I wonder what happened to the town, doesnt seem as vibrant as it used to be?
@walkonwalkon
@walkonwalkon 4 ай бұрын
Wow Mambo Martin. Thats awesome. I grew up not far from Morula School. Yeah there was a lot of muzungu in town back then because of BCL Mine. You are right, the town is not as vibrant as it used to be. The mine unfortunately closed down, so most people moved and it affected the town's economy. Although the mine opened up a couple years ago but on a small scale. Looks like the municipal government has really neglected keeping things up hence lack of trees. Asante sana for watching kaka 🙏🏿
