I recently visited Botswana where I took a walk in Gaborone's oldest shopping district/street called Main Mall. The area is home to lots of informal shops selling music, clothes, arts & crafts and traditional food. The area is also home to businesses, banks, supermarkets, many printing shops and internet cafes. In the past this was the most important shopping district in Gaborone, today Gaborone has many large shopping malls that are more important. The Botswana Parliament building and the National Musuem are also in the area.

So many beautiful memories. Grew up in Gabs from 1982 to 1997. Went to Thornhill and MAP. Remember going shopping to Spar which appears in the video. My dad used to work for the Botswana government in buildings dept which had an office in that mall. ❤

Thanks for the video. Love how the place is clean. What i dont understand... where is the "Mall"? Isnt a Mall a large building with many shops under the one roof? What i saw was street vendors alongside the roadway.

Hi, thanks for watching! I get where you are coming from, it doesn't look like a traditional mall. So I would try to answer by saying that it is more of an open air mall, with a walk way for pedestrians. So it is not under one roof but it has similar shops that you would find in any new mall in Gaborone such as banks, business offices, super markets, bookstores, hair salons, internet cafes, take aways etc. It was one of the first shopping areas/malls built in the city and it has kept its original look.

The mall, in this case, refers to the strip that connects the civic centre and the parliament!! pretty much the same concept as the mall that connects the queen's residence to the parliament square and surroundings in London. That is why it is a giant red carpet if you have noticed!!

That straight walk actually connects the Government parliament building with the caborone City council. In between them is this Mall, main mall. Memlriea.. i walked this pathways unaccountable number of times especially as a University of Botswana Students or at rimes when i was just staying in Gabs, the university is not that far away from this straight walk as well , it's a walking distance to the University and national stadium.

why I see no motorcycles in the city?

Batswana are not motorcycle lovers, they prefer cars. You’ll see 1 or 2 motorcycles here and there mostly ridden by enthusiasts and delivery drivers.
