Two friends of mine lived in Kolkata for a number of years. This is what they told me: "Everyone in Kolkata aspires to own some kind of vehicle; a bike, a tricycle, a cart, a pedicab, a car...whatever. Once they secure a vehicle, their next purchase is a horn, a bell or a klaxon...any kind of noise maker they can stick on their ride...because that's the ultimate goal of Kokatans...to sit in traffic and make noise."

This was the Calcutta I knew in 1970, I lived in Beniapukur Road & worked in Dharamtala St. by the Salvation Army. and this video walked through many of the places i knew. the unrelenting crowds of people, the smells, yet did you notice curiosity, interest, but almost no hostility.... it definitely hasn't Changed. when i Got home to the UK after nearly three years in india at village level i knocked on my mums front door. She didn't recognise me! I looked like an Anglo-Indian...and sounded like one too. I still drop into it sometimes even now, especially when talking with indian friends. Mostly good memories.

Thank You so much. I am a citizen of Kolkata, but I live in the Southern part of the city. Central Kolkata has always been a recluse for the eateries, parks, book stores, museums, etc. As we are in lockdown, the usual humdrum of our city has been subdued to an extent. It is also pejorative to not care for anyone else in this pandemic. So, this video is definitely a calming element after these four months of being self-locked inside a flat. Thank you once again.

The noises, sights are awesome. I'm walking right in the street, the roadway. People overtaking the cameraman make this film so dynamic and attractive and interesting to watch. Everyone is going about their business, and what things we see them doing. Everything is here, mannn. Like a feature film.

I did notice a lot of hate in the comments. To be noted - the area of the city where Kees has been roaming around is the archaic old and unplanned part of the town. Kolkata had three districts back during the British raj - a) The White Town - The erstwhile British bastion - Included the Maidan, Chowringhee, Esplanade and the so called adjoining areas. Still green and pretty clean. b) The old black town - Mostly the outskirts of the white town. Grew chaotically as Kolkata grew in prominence. This is the majority of the region where the walk has been centered around. The is is the true Kolkata - hot humid and filthy. Yet economically, the most robust. Most small scale businesses are still situated here. The city took in millions of refugees from Bangladesh after the 1971 Bangladeshi war, the Noakhali riots and neighboring states of Bihar, Jharkhand and Orissa. Most people were as poor as anyone could think of - Kolkata opened her arms for the ailing ! c) The Zamindari North Kolkata : The rich and highly born noble Indians lived in their magnificent bunglows here. Now in a present state of dismay and dilapidation. Yet, culturally the strongest hub of Kolkata with areas like College Street ! Later parts of Kolkata included areas beyond Bhawanipore - mostly in the 1950s. Today's South Kolkata - most people here are rich and educated and is a cleaner and a developed area. But, what fun is it to roam around a city that has only residential areas ? Why would I as a traveller from a different culture go to experience residential buildings ?? The Newer Kolkata - North eastern fringes - Probably the best part of Kolkata. Clean, wide roads, fancy tall skyscrapers - Salt Lake is a posh neighborhood with elegant villas and rich people. New Town is a swanky place with multi-story buildings and expressways. In all - Kolkata has it all. Kees as a traveller, showed you the parts she/he (sorry, I do not know your gender !) found the most fascinating. If people want to see better and unsurreal places where the common average Kolkattan lives - go for videos like Kolkata Skyline and stuff if you want to see the developed side of India. And many people are talking about women not on streets. The part of Kolkata showed by Kees, is again a part that hosts raw businesses, small scale business, hard labor and the manufacturing and wholesale dens of Kolkata. Kolkata, in fact is one of the safest cities in India. If you were short dresses in Delhi - you might be ogled at lecherously - In kolkata people are way more cool with stuff. You might definitely get a stare, yet no one will lecherously stare at you or give you judgemental looks ! For a city with a population of 15 million including its suburbs - Kolkata has to offer a lot !
@theodoredreiser57827 жыл бұрын
"The Newer Kolkata - North eastern fringes - Probably the best part of Kolkata. Clean, wide roads, fancy tall skyscrapers." I don't want to fly halfway around the planet to see fancy skyscrapers; we have those here in America. I'll be in Calcutta for Christmas and New Year's.

I've been to Kolkata five times, starting in 1980. last time about 2008. I just love it! I always stayed a sudder- or lindsey street (where the film starts) - new market area. low budget: salvation army red shield house (sudder street - now demolished; 1980); high end: Oberoi (1986). never met better educated and more friendly people in India - especially in college street. I still correspond with a dear friend from the 'city of joy' (Malay Kumar of Sunderbans). the walk takes me back many years ...

Keez starts to walk on the side of a street, then goes into a side street, then turns and goes into a tinier side street of a side street which becomes darker and narrows even further. Then the tiny walkway seamlessly merges into people's homes until Keez realised he has entered someone's living room and hurriedly walks back. 😁

India's space program earns money, used for extreme weather predictions etc. Nuclear program wasfir defence and eliminated India Pakistan wars, which were regular before nuclear weapons. Your sir is a simplistic comment, you should learn more about the world.

Kolkata has opened arms to millions of refugees coming in from backgrounds way more improvished than in this video. Kolkata is overpopulated because it sheltered millions of refugees from Bangladesh and also immigrants from neighboring states of Bihar, Jharkhand and Orissa. There are many parts of the city that open up the front of the new developing India. Sadly, with 90% India's money being held only in the hands of the 10% of the population - it is indeed depressing.

If they fix a lot of their buildings and keep their streets cleaner it would be a great place to visit and those food benders would wash their hands mire when fixing people's food after teaching raw meats so others don't get sick . But some of those Indian dudes are really cute a lil skinny but OMG they have some handsome guys tho .

@TheResi426 жыл бұрын
That's really funny because i hear that a lot but in the video, i honestly don't see much garbage anywhere. Maybe some walls blackened by the pollution but nothing too alarming. Same thing for the "malnourished" i didn't see anybody who seemed to be starving like if you were in an african village. And for poverty, well i can't really see it on the video (most were wearing clean clothes) but i guess it's not that easy to detect.
