Edinburgh is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and is the capital of Scotland.
The written history of Scotland begins with the arrival of the Roman Empire in Great Britain, when the Romans occupied what is now England and Wales, administering it as the Roman province of Britannia. To the north was territory not ruled by the Romans - Caledonia. His people were the Picts. From a classical historical point of view, Scotland seemed a peripheral country, slow to make advances that trickled down from the wellspring of Mediterranean civilization, but as knowledge of the past grows, it has become apparent that some developments were more primitive and more advanced. than was previously believed and that the seas were very important to Scottish history.
From the beginning of the eighth century to the thirteenth century it was the Celts who were in charge of the Scottish crown; the first Scottish king was Kenneth MacAlpin, who began in 840, and the last was Alexander III, who ended his reign in 1249. After the Norman colonization, it was they who dominated the country (1286-voting constitution).
Due to Scotland's geographical orientation and its strong reliance on maritime trade routes, it had close links to the south and east with the Baltic countries, and with France via Ireland and the European mainland. Following the Act of Union with England, for the creation of the sovereign state now known as the United Kingdom, and the subsequent Scottish Industrial Revolution and Enlightenment, Scotland became one of Europe's commercial, intellectual, and industrial powers. Its industrial decline following World War II was particularly sharp, but in recent decades the country has enjoyed something of a cultural and economic renaissance, fueled in part by a resurgence in financial services, oil and gas revenues from the North Sea and most recently, a returned parliament.
Visitors pack the Old Town, a bustling area of centuries-old buildings and narrow alleys. At its heart, perched on an extinct volcano, Edinburgh Castle is home to Scotland’s crown jewels.
The Royal Mile, a steep street lined with traditional pubs, casual eateries, souvenir shops and small museums, runs from the castle to the Scottish Parliament and the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the Queen’s Scottish residence. ‪@meetwalking2023‬
