Walking in the South Pennines | Turley Holes and Higher House Moor

A recent local walk, during a cold and snowy spell. I spent more time on my jacksy than my feet so bought some micro-spikes when I got home. 👌

Thanks mate. I was getting a bit muddled up with two cold walks we did up there and the canal skating, etc. One was to Stoodley but we dropped down the Famine track before getting there, because either Castrol had developed a limp or got balled ice on her furry feet? The other was when we walked to the Basin Stone, that was a cold un too as I recall.

@@ChrisJB I remember doing that. The worst Castrol iced paws situation we ever faced was a walk we did (which we very rarely did) on the moors behind tod going towards Burnley. They were just blocks of ice then! Poor old Castrol

A bit like when a stray football comes your way from kids playing and you belt it back to them. Isn't it great to have a moorland on your doorstep? Another great trip Chris. Did a 14m circuit of Dartmoor last Thursday and visited Cranmere Pool letterbox in perfect sunny frozen conditions, I’ll be patiently waiting for another high pressure window to come in…let’s hope that’s not the last of winter!

Interesting re the 45" singles. I guess that was when Toad Lane was still in its prime, before the shopping centre was built? The earliest Rochdale record shops I used were Bradley's, on Yorkshire Street and Save Records on the inside market. 😎

@@ChrisJB that’s right Chris. Bradlys was on the corner of Toad lane and if you followed it around towards what is now the co-op museum you were effectively at the back of the old market. Toad lane had a small market on there and funny enough I think the record stall was save, which relocated into the new inside market. It's been a cold one up your way Chris - all the res is frozen. We like a proper winter, which calls for proper hats. That moor sounds like a right place - dodgy! Weird keepers and tire slashers. How do Mark. Yes, very cold but alas not for long, the wet, grey and mild weather soon returned. Funny you mention sacrifice, there are some rocks up here that early historians thought where used by druids for that very purpose! That theory has long been dispelled but a good story nonetheless. Hi Chris, looked a bit parky but magnificent, I love that round from Hollingsworth up to the White House then down Cragg Vale always go that way to go home rather than going through Halifax from the 62, probably no quicker but a site deal prettier, lots of wonderful local history, I am 100% with you regarding carving of stone, I hate graffiti of every kind, just glad people fought for the right to roam so we no longer have to contend too much with grumpy game keepers, all the best my friends TtT 😊

How do Tito. Aye, it's a nice drive that (I live very close to the M62, Milnrow junction, where you'd come off). We always go to Hebden Bridge via the White House and Cragg Vale too, rather than through Tod'. We have a family tradition of saluting the geese at Cragg Vale (just before the turning to the Hinchcliffe Arms). I was hoping to do a camp on Lad Law (Boulsworth) tonight but the high winds have put me off so I'm going to go bird-watching over near Leeds instead! Bye for now pal. 🙂

I've done that walk a good few times in the past and always enjoyed it. I do like to be out on the moors in deep snow, though we rarely get such conditions these days. Such exhilaration battling the elements! Nice one Chris.

I saw him and Susan at a funeral in December, not been on Crompton Moor for a while so headed up there this afternoon to blow a few cobwebs away , which it certainly did! I need to retire so I can help out Bob and Co doing jobs on the moors, I enjoyed doing some dry stone wall repairs with them, Atb.

Walked up past there a few times on the Pennine Way but never done that circular. I do the Marsden to Hebden Bridge stretch. Lovely moors up there. We'll have to get up for a trot up that way.

@@ChrisJB brilliant, I've done boulsworth in the tent a good few times, have a good spot if you're interested. On a clear day you can see Blackpool Tower, the big one, all 3 peaks, the lake district mountains and ferry bridge power station.

A very snowy walk for you Chris. Looked really cold, but recognised familiar places up Blackstone Edge. The White House (visible from our house). Don't blame you for quick walking. Wonderful. I grew up in near White Coppice in the 80s and it's only having moved to the very flat Midlands do I truly appreciate the glorious beauty of the Lancashire hills and moors. How lucky you are to be just minutes away from space, hills and...solitude. On a less poetic note, what's the blue puffy you always walk in? Do you sweat? I have some buffalo jackets (belay, fell jacket and the S6) which are great breathable, water-resistant, quick-drying, active-wear garments. But, being breathable, they allow body heat to escape so a stopper / belay jacket or puffy or even a gortex rain jacket is needed to stay warm when you stop for breaks or at camp. Thoughts, sir?

Hello Imran and many thanks. The blue jacket is the Patagonia Micropuff. It wasn't cheap but it's a synthetic fibre, so doesn't lose insulation if it gets wet. I love it. Great on winter walks and handy for summer camps if it cools down at night. It's very light and packs small. Thanks for watching mate. 🙂

Fantastic work Chris and very interesting and entertaining. The Pennine Way section is "my patch" really, even though I live in Hudds. Particularly good for your adventure with the weather being so cold. Sickening to hear about the tyre-slashing incident, as you say there's not really a proper deterrent. Raptor Persecution is on the increase on "our" Moors, just read all about it this week. All the best, I'm looking forward to watching your escapades in 2024.
