This is a bit of a compilation of a few recent short walks in and around my local patch in the South Pennines.
Finding edible mushrooms was high on the agenda but I dabble in a few other things too.

Your wild camping vids are great Chris, but its not just about that with you.. its your knowledge and obvious love of the wilderness, the open moors, and everything you come across while exploring. I've watched vids of yours and shown them to my partner and said 'look! Thats what we saw today!' And then known what we were looking at. Yep, thoroughly enjoyable. We had a picnic at wrigleys cabin the other day.. that was through discovering your channel.. what a spot! 👍

Hello Mats and thank you for your very generous comment. It's good to know folk like the wider aspect to the films as I sometimes wonder if I overdo it a bit! I have a soft spot for Wrigley's Cabin. It's very peaceful and you rarely see anyone thereabouts. Best wishes, Chris

Aye up Chris hope you’re OK. Loved this post very very informative and very usefully different. My dad used to know all our local mushroom spots and I’ve been going there ever since. Sadly improved pastures in our area have diminished the wild yield but there are still plenty to find. When I was working as a Countryside Ranger for our local authority, my manager had Polish ancestry and his dad was still around. His dad I suppose was an very good amateur mycophile and I discovered lots of locations from him especially a prolific CEP location which I’ve kept secret for years and still have…yum yum!!! On another note, as I’ve posted before, I’m on the Humberhead Levels and I recently spent a couple of days on our local SSSIs at Broadbent Gate Moors and Inkle Moor with my botanist, cecidologist, Lepidopterologist and malacologist friends investigating these wonderful habitats we found a very sustainable habitat that was welcoming and some ways of intervention to protect them. But I loved this post, it was vibrant and refreshing to know we’ve still got a helluva lot of wonderful ecosystems on our doorsteps but sadly, what they weren’t when we wo kids. Take care Chris and keep posting. Bessies Ron

Many thanks Ron I've said it before but I'm always a bit hesitant putting stuff like this out as it is a bit niche so it's nice to get some positive feedback. Alas I am not able to go wildcamping every weekend so little jaunts like these in the local countryside fill in the gaps. Yes, the folks on the continent seem more in tune with gathering mushrooms. It seems quite normal over there. I discovered a good cep site right under my nose last autumn, though more often than not the slugs usually beat me to them. The ones I'm keen to find are chanterelles, though have never found them local to me (seen them in the Lakes). ATB pal, Chris

Hi Chris- fun to see some of your local area and tag along with your mushroom hunting! You found some really nice ones! I'm not much of an eater, but I love their shapes, colors and variety! Pretty wildflowers and a few nice butterflies too :). Great to hear some of the local history and how the farming has changed over the years. Very enjoyable! :) Cheers- Jen

Thanks Jennifer. Yes, even if you don't eat the mushrooms, they are still good to stumble upon, seeming otherworldly in their appearance and habits. I'm making the most of the late summer wildflowers now with autumn on the way. 😭. Bye for now, Chris

A mushroom expert here in Alaska where I live told me not to worry about taking the mushrooms. Apparently they mostly spread themselves vegetatively, through their mycelium. So they're not entirely reliant on their spores for reproduction. His view was that you're doing no harm to the population taking the fruiting bodies, even though they spread spores too. But I'm too scared to eat them myself!
@ChrisJB
@ChrisJB Жыл бұрын
Hello Karen. Yes, I've heard something similar too, ie picking a mushroom is the equivalent of picking an apple off a tree. To be honest, there were that many horse mushrooms and of a good size, I would've needed a horse and cart to get them home! With regards to eating, I'm ultra cautious really which I guess is the best way to be.

An interesting video of a place I frequent regularly , the Piethorne Valley. I came across some old cellars up near Binn Ruins as I think it’s called whilst out walking, have you seen them and know anything about them?

Cheers Paul. Yes, I know the cellars. As for their purpose, that is less clear. I'm sure I heard somewhere that it has been suggested that they may have something to do with the tanning of leather.
