Kees’ walking videos are a relevation. Although there are other virtual walks out there, both on DVD and on KZbin (many of these amateurish and unwatchable without inducing vertigo), Kees’ are in a class by themselves in capturing the looks and sounds of the contemporary urban scene. As he plunks us down on a street somewhere in the world, and moves steadily forward, we experience a sense of total immersion in the throbbing life of that city. We move through often chaotic streams of pedestrian, bicycle, motorcycle, auto, and bus traffic, passing by the shops, restaurants, construction sites, and civic buildings of the current venue. The photography is so vivid that we almost feel jostled by the passing walkers or running kids, or in danger of being knocked down by careless motorcylists. (Hope Kees is being careful about his own safety as he records these scenes.) We pass shoppers, young couples in love, parents holding hands with their kids, giggling teenagers, street artists, people on their way to and from work, tourists, bikes impossibly laden with what seems like hundreds of pounds of goods. Every corner we turn brings new surprises and astonishing sights. I’ve viewed (as I walk the treadmill) only a small fraction of the hundreds of videos available, but enough to know that this body of work is a treasure trove. In making these videos for people who unable to do the kind of travel on display here, but who are nevertheless interested in “seeing the world,” Kees is performing an invaluable public service.

Thanks, this video brings me back to the time I was living in Wuhan. It's familiar, the faces, the roads, the color of sky, the crowd, the buses, the clothes people wearing, the trees by the roads. I was 24 years then, a young guy with many dreams. But now...🙂

LOL your greatly underestimating India in shittiness, while over stating China's. Have you seen some areas of harlem? Try cities like Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzen, Guandong, Hong kong, etc. I'm sure in every country you can find 3rd world like sittings, like detroit or fresno or madrid.

thanks for all your videos, keeezi, this is the kind of travel i enjoy, myself; and in most cases, few or no tourists. the two things that amaze me in this Wuhan video are, one, the number of busses on the street, and two (and more amazing to me as a new yorker) that people ride motor scooters on the sidewalk with the pedestrians. wow!!

I agree totally with Larry B. I watched the video of walking in Old Delhi and the contrast of the cleanliness of the streets is astounding. Both countries have approximately the same population too.

Thanks for sharing. I visited Wuhan in 2009 but I never ventured out too far from the hostel I was staying at. I went to the Yellow Crane Tower and across the bridge over the big river and a few other places.. but never to the areas in this video :) It was my first solo trip to China, so I was still a little worried I would get lost :) May I ask what camera you used to do this? It doesn't seem like people are noticing you filming. I never had the confidence to walk around with a video camera, even a micro one, when I visited China.. I always wanted to.
