I exit a (7) Subway Train at the Mets-Willets Point Station and attempt to visit the 2019 U.S. Open Tennis Championship Grounds during the Men's Semifinals on a rainy day. Needless to say, I couldn't get too close before security stopped me for having a backpack and a video recorder.
From Wikipedia:
"The United States Open Tennis Championships is a hard court tennis tournament. The tournament is the modern version of one of the oldest tennis championships in the world, the U.S. National Championship, for which men's singles and men's doubles were first played in 1881.
Since 1987, the US Open has been chronologically the fourth and final Grand Slam tournament of the year. The other three, in chronological order, are the Australian Open, the French Open, and Wimbledon. The US Open starts on the last Monday of August and continues for two weeks, with the middle weekend coinciding with the U.S. Labor Day holiday.
The tournament consists of five primary championships: men's and women's singles, men's and women's doubles, and mixed doubles. The tournament also includes events for senior, junior, and wheelchair players. Since 1978, the tournament has been played on acrylic hard courts at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, Queens, New York City. The US Open is owned and organized by the United States Tennis Association (USTA), a non-profit organization, and the chairperson of the US Open is Katrina Adams. Revenue from ticket sales, sponsorships, and television contracts are used to develop tennis in the United States.
The US Open employs standard 7-points tiebreakers in every set of a singles match. For the other three Grand Slam events, there are special scoring methods for a match that reaches 6-6 in the last possible set (the third for women and the fifth for men): in the French Open, the decisive set continues until a player takes a two-game lead, in Australia, an extended tiebreaker to 10 points is played, and at Wimbledon, a tiebreaker is played only if the game score reaches 12-12. As with the US Open, those events use tiebreakers to decide the other sets."

Love this! I was 9 years old in 1964 and The World's Fair was very exciting. One thing I remember was the video phone of the future. I actually got to speak to my brother (in another room) and we thought it was so cool to be able to see each other and hear each other. The dream of a video phone didn't become a practical reality until modern digital and internet technology. Here's the irony, now that I have it, I hardly ever use it! Thanks for the memories!

My friends and I would take the Q58 Corona bus to the '65 World's Fair and then jump the fence (no money) and then grab some coins from the fountain outside the Hawaii pavilion to get a soda. Sorry for the teenage indiscretions - we were broke but happy. Cheers.

This is where I trained for Queens Dept. of New York City Parks and Recreation. They have putt putt golf stall there which you passed. they also have an ice skating rink and a pool further up to your left. I learned how to use a two cylinder leaf blower,( fill the leaf blower with gas)a lawn mower and what's that device called that cuts grass -a trimmer. I never saw the water on at the unisphere while I trained there. Yes I agree the fact that the water is on, it looks more like a show for visitors to the tennis match.

Thank you very much for this video. I think it is excellent. Way back in the late 1980s ('88 or '89 or thereabouts) we came into the City via bus (PABT) and got on a 7 train, I forget if it was express or local, but made it to the then-named Willets Point-Shea Stadium station during the U.S. Open. I remember it was a nice sunny and warm day, unlike your 2019 adventure. I think the lower-cost seats were "a mere $99" or so. We just didn't want to spend the money on a sport we didn't follow, so we traversed the park to see the Unisphere, which was dry and no fences around the perimeter of the reflecting pool as we see in your video. We also walked to the New York State Pavilion. If I recall correctly, the place was a dump with some trash in the plaza itself. The towers were mostly devoid of any paint. However, the rest of the park that we saw was in pretty good shape.

Back in the 80s before security was as tight as it is today, my sisters and myself would walk around the tennis courts all day long. We would literally arrive to Flushing Meadows around 4 am and help my mom set up shop by the pools as a food vendor then venture off to the tennis courts. All day long we just went in and out of the courts collecting balls and watching players practice. Fun times. Then we would head back to the park and watch all the soccer games. When the Mets won the World Series in 86 the park was packed!! Good ol days.

The last time I saw the water fountains at the Unisphere operating was in May 1965 for the World's Fair. Yea, I heard the US Open turns them on once a year. It's one of the reasons Walking NYC channel is original.

Interesting for me to see this. It was actually the very first place I went to on my very first trip to NYC, before the tennis stadium was even built. Why? Because I wanted to see Shea Stadium because The Beatles had played there. In later years I worked at the US Open for nearly 30 years as a journalist. I haven't been since 2002 so it was interesting to see the walk from the 7 train that I often used to do, and both the entrances you filmed. Thanks.
