Walking NYC Penn Station & Moynihan Train Hall | October 2023

Penn Station is a major transportation hub located in New York City. It is one of the busiest transportation facilities in the United States and serves as a central transit point for commuters and travelers in the Northeastern United States. The current Penn Station is an underground transportation complex with Amtrak, Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), and New Jersey Transit (NJT) services, as well as various subway lines converging at the station. It lacks the grandeur of the original structure and has often been criticized for its lackluster appearance and crowded conditions. In recent years, there have been ongoing discussions and plans for renovating and expanding Penn Station to improve its appearance, functionality, and capacity.

Thank you for this very interesting walk. Hopefully, when all the building is finished, Penn Station will be a well-functioning and beautiful entrance to the city for travelers. I have always felt that the destruction of the beautiful old Penn Station was an insult to civilization, but at least it resulted in the establishment of commissions to preserve other architecturally or historically important buildings. I have always found it interesting that at least two of the ancient Roman buildings that served as inspiration for the old Penn Station are, after nearly 2,000 years, still in use: the Baths of Diocletian, much restored, as a church and museum and the Baths of Caracalla, somewhat ruinous, as a concert venue.

That is really an interesting situation going on at Madison Square Garden between them and the State of New York... Very interesting walkthrough there. Gives me more ideas for traveling there. I wanted to do a full day tour with videos. But I'm still in the beginning stages of planning a trip up there.

I will be transferring from Amtrak to a Long Island Rail Road train a few days from now. It looks like it will be just as hard to find my way as before, maybe even requiring a longer walk from Moynihan Train Hall. I haven't been to Penn in a few years. I love Penn Station same time I’m glad it’s getting a major makeover and renovation, it’s like underground city from above New York also on top of Madison Square Garden and Moynihan Train Hall.

The old entrance of Penn Station, right in front of MSG, was a trip. It had such a unique smell of pizza, bar sweat and other fried comfort food that the Moynihan Station is a shock to the system. Having said that, there is a sterile feel to the Moynihan station. I really wished they re-created the one section of the original Les Beaux Arts style that let in all the light as you boarded the train. 🚊

Moynihan is big enough that a part of it could be built out for MSG. Now imagine the Knicks playing underneath Moynihan with the skylights above -- that would truly be the world's greatest sports venue. Goes to show you just how small minded the Dolans truly are, just in case you didn't already know. And the best part it theres enough space there that the train hall size wouldn't have to be reduced at all.

Good walk through! Thank you for your observations. A few of my own: 1) You made a general statement that the NJ Transit wing was unlikely to see the kind of renovations ongoing at LIRR (and Amtrak). Do you have specific information regarding that? 2) The Central and West End Corridors of LIRR will continue to be dark, low-ceilinged and cramped as long as the east-west axis continues to be on two levels. 3) Already it's clear the Moynihan Train Hall has inadequate restroom facilities. Long lines for both genders develop quickly with each arriving train. With only 3 cramped restrooms in all of the original Penn Station, you'd think they'd have learned their lesson. 4) With only the small underground passageway beneath 8th Avenue and the ACE lines connecting Penn with Moynihan, a lot of travelers will have a hard time understanding how to get from one to the other.

I thought the post office was supposed to move out of the Farley building. Something about not being able to dispatch the mail trucks efficiently, so I read or heard in an earlier video then the Moynihan train hall was still under construction. It’s just weird that Penn Station (which I thought was going to be renamed, “Empire Station”) and the Moynihan train hall aren’t going to both be under the same roof. I think even if the station and train hall had the entire Farley building to themselves, they would still be busting at the seams. Negotiations are tough. It is great that they are widening the corridors and raising the ceiling as well as adding shops and restaurants. The stairwells down to the platforms were way too tight

I'm visiting from Boston now. When i got off the train in NYC i exited into Penn Station, thinking i was in Moynihan Hall (i am not familiar with either of these before now). It seems it makes more sense to return via Penn Station rather than Moynihan Hall. Is that correct?

Because most of them-- even relatively experienced NJT users--- aren't aware of it. It's not well signed and there's no obvious waiting area in the middle of the exit corridor. I wasn't aware of it either until once when I was boarding a train from the main hall I noticed some folks already arriving on the platform far in front of me. The next time I was there I explored where they had come from. You're right about boarding from the exit corridor though.... when the track number gets posted you can avoid "the scrum" of people in the main hall rushing to the platform. So let's just keep this our little secret!

I think providing airport style seating would be adequate and also the Moynihan train hall closes from 1 to 4 so there is no excuse to not add seats for passengers. They also had security patrolling the area so they can deal with any problems
