I walk through Wakefield, Bronx from the 233rd Street Subway Station via White Plains Road to the Mount Vernon, Westchester border.
From Wikipedia:
"Wakefield is a working-class and middle-class section of the northern borough of the Bronx in New York City. It is bounded by the city's border with Westchester County to the north, East 222nd Street to the south, and the Bronx River Parkway to the west.
Wakefield is the northernmost neighborhood in New York City (although the city's northernmost point is actually in Riverdale, at the College of Mount Saint Vincent). The neighborhood is part of Bronx Community District 12 and its ZIP Codes are 10466 and 10470. Wakefield is patrolled by the 47th Precinct of the New York City Police Department. "

Nice work! Like a some of the other commenters, I was born and raised in the Bronx - grew up in this very neighborhood in the 1950's (yikes!) at the corner of 236th Street and Carpenter Avenue. Had you turned left at 236th Street, Carpenter Avenue is three blocks down the hill from White Plains Road, just above Bronx Boulevard. As you said in your opening comments, in those days, it was Italian (us), Irish and Jewish. I loved it - it was a cool place to be a kid. I think it's great that it's now a Caribbean neighborhood, with all the diversity that makes New York such a great place. As someone else mentioned, White Plains Road isn't Wakefield at its best - there are nicer, tree-lined neighborhoods a few blocks away, but to be honest - it wasn't exactly Fifth Avenue in the olds days either. It was the place where you shopped or made your way home when you got off the El - which at the time was called the Lexington Avenue line. I got a kick out of listening to you describe each business you passed, since I can name what almost every one of those was back in the day. The biggest "missing link" was the Wakefield movie theatre which you would have seen on the east side of White Plains at 235th Street. It was a big deal to us but would look crazy small today. Once a week they would give away free dishes (bonkers, I know) and they even had live acts now and then with some pretty big names. Anyway, keep up the good work and stay safe - long live the Bronx!

I had a bunch of friends who worked at the Cityline Pharmacy in the 90s. Also I knew the guys who owned Peppino‘s pizzeria and funny thing. Is they just open up another one not far for me on Tuckahoe Road and it’s called the world famous Peppino’s pizzeria, and JOHN and Carmine from Peppino‘s is at that Peppinos, I remember going to Peppino’s at 1 o’clock in the morning, I missed those days because everything in Scarsdale is closed by 10 o’clock. But anyway back to Celine Pharmacy, one of my best friends work there and another two or three friends of mine work there in the early 90s..

There was a scene in the first "Godfather" movie, filmed in a restaurant in the 3500 block of White Plains Road, above Gun Hill Road. Someone got shot. The loud noise of the White Plains Road elevated can be heard through the scene. On White Plains Road, pedestrians used to stop conversing, sometimes covering their ears, waiting for the el to pass.

@@tonyedward6909 I remember seeing the cameras and lights, outside the restaurant. The restaurant was on the west side of WP Road. Awful location for a business. The el tracks swerved over the sidewalk at that point; noisy, dark, dirty, little foot traffic. The next storefront to the north was Vavolizza Travel; big plate glass window. A school friend worked at Vavolizza Travel. She spend filming day, jumping up and down in the window, trying to get into the picture.

Yep, this is where I was born and raised, I was born in 73 and we lived a few blocks from Pepino‘s Pizza. Two blocks down with Mount Vernon and that’s where all the trouble always came from and our neighborhood and right over the 241 St. bridge was yonkers. We did not move because my grandmother and grandfather own the house and my mom did not want to leave them and for some crazy reason they did not want to move so we were basically the last time in the neighborhood. We moved after my grandmother and grandfather died a year apart From each other, my grandmother died in 92 and my grandfather died in 93 so we moved and sold the house in 94 but it was already a disaster way before we moved. I’m not gonna say I didn’t enjoy the action in the Bronx I also worked at a deli/number spot on Pittman Avenue From the early 90s to about 96 or 97 and that was a load of fun. I didn’t move so far now I am in Scarsdale New York and it’s crazy to think I’m probably less than 15 or 20 minutes away but it feels like I’m on another planet over here, an example in the Bronx for 4 July. Everyone was outside barbecuing fireworks where I am now. Everyone has a really nice house but nobody is around. No one does barbecues. I am the only house in the mood. I’ve been barbecue shooting fireworks off. yes, I still shoot them off. And if you bought fireworks around Pinos in the 90s at least the 75% chance you bought them for me. I had the warehouse behind the store on White Plains Rd. and we sold fireworks all the way until mayor Rudolph Giuliani made it way more complicated to do so. I don’t go to the old neighborhood often but I did use my quest three VR glasses there’s an app called the wanderer and you literally put in an address and it takes you right there so I walked by basically exactly what action kid did, but in VR and men I didn’t think neighborhoods could get even more ran down, but man they even opened up a dope clinic a few blocks away from 241. But I love watching this video because this is my childhood for the first 20 years of my life. Those were my stomping grounds. And I know this video was old and I did see this video a few years ago when it was made but I actually went looking forward again just because I wanted to see it. Brings back so many memories.

LOL. Comments like this always crack me up because it makes me realize that people have no idea what NY looks like outside of Time Square. This is what all of NY looks like outside of the tourist attractions. As an ex New Yorker who grew up in this neighborhood in the 80s and 90s I couldn't get over how much cleaner it looks now. Lol.

That's not a true depiction of Wakefield. He's just walking white plains road. There are side street with nicely kept one and two story residential homes. He ended his video at mount Vernon which is Westchester County new York state. When he got to 238 if he'd gone left he'd be at another Westchester county neighborhood of Yonkers. And by the way. Did he ask people to stay away? Usually between 233rd street and 238/neried Ave, it's usually a bustling busy area.

Lived in the Wakefield section 20 years ,this video didn’t do it justice ,white plains rd is all commercial, there are beautiful homes on all the side streets. Good decent hard working people live there.

It’s so weird looking at this. This is my neighborhood. It’s much nicer once you leave White Plains Road and go to the side streets. We are very close to Mount Vernon and Yonkers.

Yes wakefield is a good working class neighborhood. He just stayed under the train. He did not walk the neighbors.

Oddly enough 241st Street is not the highest street number in The Bronx by a longshot. It’s 263rd Street in Riverdale . But according to the Subway map on my wall Wakefield is absolutely the northernmost section. Btw that might be a good walk for a future video: Take the 1 to the end at 242nd Street and walk 242nd along Manhattan College and up the Henry Hudson Plwy/Riverdale Avenue to College Of Mt. St. Vincent

I grew up on 232st off of White Plains Road.. Left there 50 years ago. It looks the same except for different stores and most of the people were either Italian, Jewish or Irish Americans. I have nothing against the people who live there now. I'm just pointing out the difference.

By and large a nice neighborhood but I have a question. Why call the tracks the subway if it’s elevated wouldn’t it be the El ?

I do miss The Northeast Bronx. I used to live in the Northeast Bronx when I was teenager to a young adult 👨 but, I moved to Hertford North Carolina 😢. I didn’t like country life. I moved to Philadelphia Pennsylvania but, I live in Darby Pennsylvania. I used to go to Trinity Baptist Church ⛪️ in The Bronx New York and later Glad Tidings Church ⛪️ in the Northeast Bronx. I will pray to God one ☝️ day when I am financially strong I want to return to The Bronx New York or Queens 👸 a strong man. I love Jamaican rice 🍚 and beans 🫘 with spare ribs.

At 22 minutes and five seconds you pass by Penfield Street and you actually say you’re passing Penfield Street. That is the block I was born and raised on. It’s only two blocks long and at the other end you literally one block away from Mount Vernon but that right there is where I was born in 1973 and we did not move until 1994 when both my grandmother and grandfather passed away we were officially the last Italian person in the neighborhood. What’s funny is in the early 80s there were a few Italians left on my block, but by 1990 they were all gone that deli that you were passing by at the 22 minute mark was called Sammy‘s and that is where we hung out. Pepinos was another hang out with John and Carmine and now they opened up a Pepino on Tucker Road in Yonkers The café right next-door to Peppino’s not even sure if it’s still there anymore was 24 hours and we would always stop in there at 4 o’clock in the morning after a night at Sue rendezvous. I have to say once we move away I stayed hanging around the neighborhood until about the year 2002. I haven’t been by since, I only live maybe 15 minute car ride away but it feels like I’m on a different planet. Anyway, love watching a video of my old neighborhood.
