I grew up there and went to the Villa. I remember when the plane crashed in what was called "The Huntington". The woods off of Watt st. and Stadium ave. I remember Blue Balls. The statue at the top of the stadium in the park. The Sea Plane base. Pepe's candy store on Ampere, by the water. Luparino's Deli. Garbers candy store on Middletown rd. Neckles beach on Layton ave. Da good ole Bronx. Edit...You failed to mention when you crossed 95 onto Jarvis ave that the development that you said was about 4 years old(really about 10-15yrs) used to be a coveted little league field(Vinaccia Field) and a big part behind it was a indian artifact storage area. A walk around Country Club road where it turns into Agar place would have been nice. Glad to see the area is still well kept. Crosby/Buhre ave is just like Fordham rd now. Crazy.

The "blue balls" (graffiti sprayed) statue that you are referring to is now called "American Boy". When it was atop the old concrete stadium it was actually featured in the 1989 independent film "True Love" staring Annabella Sciorra (which helped to make her a star). After the stadium was torn down, the statue went into storage for many years and then was cleaned up and is now on display on a pedestal facing the running track in Pelham Bay Park. You can see it at the end of AK's video on Pelham Bay. Crosby/Buhre shopping has gotten busier, but is nothing like Fordham Rd. Again, you can see it on AK's Pelham Bay video.

A great idea. Parkchester is worth a walk. A deco-influenced designed community with terracotta sculptures on many buildings. There is even a Starbucks on a corner, which the NYTimes wrote about several years ago. The first Macy's to be built after the 34th St store was built in Parkchester and it is still there. A scene from the Meryl Streep movie, "Doubt" was filmed near one of the development's buildings.

What people don't realize owning property in NYC is extremely expensive this is why renting is also pricey just keeping close to the city and working there is pricey. People from other places will never understand living close to nature has a price. Country Club and thhe Beach and City Island is a community within a community, Generational land.

Why is it called "Country Club"? As I was told, Westchester Country Club was originally located there. What is now Pelham Bay Park was originally part of it and it extended down to where the Throggs Neck Bridge comes into (or goes out of) The Bronx. When the actual Club moved to White Plains they allowed the club known as "Westchester Country Club" new the bridge toll booth plaza to retain the name and the neighborhood near Pelham Bay Park is known as "Country Club." Confusing, but as I, a proud former Bronxite, was told, true.

@mynewyork165
@mynewyork165 3 жыл бұрын
@Amelie Mae I actually live in the area & think that the building next to the new one is the worst. So is the one behind that one. It's always so noisy, the residents smoke hookah & other things in that patio between the buildings & in the park, the police are always there, & there's been some fires there too. It's because the one next to where the stable used to be is also some kind of affordable housing, & they accept tenants who don't care about the rest of the neighborhood. In comparison to those two party buildings, this one isn't so bad. And I'm so glad that the owners of the auto repair shop behind the new building moved out. They were so noisy with their loud music & fireworks in front of their clients' cars. I think other auto repair shops do that too On Stillwell, & they smoke so much weed. On the other streets near there, there were fireworks, even right by the precinct.

@@mynewyork165 Pelham Bit Stables and Bronx Equestrian Center are on 9 Shore Road, same address. Unfortunately, they now do not offer public riding anymore as they are under a limited permit by NYC. They have other services which you can call and ask about. Van Cortland Park has a stable that still offers public rides. The original stable on Pelham Parkway was known as "Cy's Pelham Parkway Riding" but better known by their sign "Horse Rides"! Unfortunately it closed in 2014. 😿

Many NICER houses were not shown in the video. This area is know for its seclusion, so walking cannot capture the whole culture. And that is how many of the well-heeled residents like it. If you want to make the mistake and pass judgement that all the houses there are "bread and butter", many would laugh in your face and say "what does your house look like? And the interior? Type of car???"
