San Francisco's Chinatown is a vibrant and historic neighborhood that stands as the oldest and largest Chinatown in North America. It is a captivating district filled with a rich tapestry of Chinese culture, traditions, cuisine, and architecture. Here's a glimpse into the unique charm of San Francisco Chinatown:
Located in the heart of the city, San Francisco Chinatown is a bustling enclave that offers a fascinating blend of sights, sounds, and flavors. The district spans several blocks and is characterized by its colorful architecture, ornate gateways, and bustling streets adorned with red lanterns.
The area is teeming with shops, markets, and restaurants that showcase the vibrant heritage and traditions of the Chinese community. The streets are filled with enticing aromas, vibrant street vendors, and shops selling an array of goods, from traditional Chinese herbs and remedies to unique souvenirs and intricate crafts.
Grant Avenue and Stockton Street serve as the main thoroughfares of Chinatown, offering a multitude of opportunities for exploration. Dragon's Gate, a grand and ornate entrance arch, marks the gateway to Chinatown on Grant Avenue and welcomes visitors into this vibrant neighborhood.

Woohoo, a dedicated San Francisco Chinatown video! 😍 I enjoyed seeing the Chinatown Gate, vibrant buildings, hanging lanterns, murals, and local shops. 17:03 I ate at Lucky Creation Vegetarian Restaurant before! 😋 19:22 It's such a treat that you got to sample the fortune cookie and to see the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory! 🥠 35:00 It's so cool to see and learn that Bruce Lee was born at the Chinese Hospital! 😎 Thank you sharing this informative walk through Chinatown, AK! 🤗

Excellent tour of SF Chinatown! I worked in the financial district near Chinatown for years. I used to walk up there on my lunch hour. My parents also used to take us to the Far East Cafe when we were kids. It was magical for us. The lanterns hanging from the ceiling and the curtained booths. It’s sad to see it closed. My Chinese American friend told me it was tourist food but we loved it! Another thing - that old Catholic Church on California and Grant is a historic landmark. Old St Mary’s. It was the old cathedral and survived the 1906 Earthquake. Or at least the walls did! It’s beautiful inside and I used to go up there for noon mass on holy days and the pipe organ would be played.

I was born and raised in S.F. Lived in North Beach as a child in the mid to late 1960’s. I used to run around Chinatown with my friends when I was a kid. My Dad would take me to Ping Yueng Restaurant and Bakery on Grant and Pacific. Restaurant has been long gone for many years. I’m surprised you did not walk through Portsmouth Square? Fairly close to where you were. Chinatown is still the same after 55+ years. Thank you for the great memories!

Thanks for the video. Having grown up in SF and attended Galileo HS in the 70-80's, this video makes me feel nostalgic for what Chinatown was like in the past. You stated that the video was made on May 23rd, 2023, at 11 am, which is on a Tuesday. 40 years ago, if you stood on the corner of Pacific and Grant Street or Pacific and Stockton, it would have been people-mountain-people-sea [人山人海], even on a weekday. Every shop was open for business and packed with locals and tourists. Chinatown then was just magical!

That was fantastic! Thanks so much for doing the walk. I used to live near that area, on Russian Hill, many years ago, and I loved walking around North Beach and Chinatown. I was surprised and pleased to see that the streets and the businesses look just about the way I remember them. During the pandemic I read so much about homelessness in SF and the problems arising from so many people living on the streets. Maybe Chinatown has its own special ways of dealing with people in trouble. I've subscribed and I look forward to seeing more of your videos. Thanks again!

Thanks for the video, along with the history lesson. 175 years Chinatown has been in San Francisco. That's means that Chinatown is as old as the city of San Francisco. The non-tourist part seems to be doing well, but the tourist part could use more people traffic.

I love this video. You take your time and you're good at relating information. Dragons Gate has been there since 1970. I'm so glad the fortune cookie factor is prosperous . I started going there with my family since the 60's. We frequently visited Chinatown. We loved it. It was so brilliant and colorful. In the 70's my husband and I would go up Washington to the Sum Tie Sum Yen restaurant. Fabulous noodles that I still crave. I wonder if the produce market on the corner is open again. It was a raised area maybe 10x10 just teeming and overflowing with fruit and veggies. Just a joy to see. When visiting in 2021, I was told they don't know if the lady is reopening. Thanks again. I miss Chinatown so much!😅 35:00

this was EXCELLENT!!!! calming, soothing, good light & historical narration & in stark dramatic contrast to all the unnerving & depressing other footage of SF these days. btw, i thought your pronunciation of "SUN YAT-SEN" seemed off so i double checked; it is in fact "SOON" not "SUN". other than that, top marks!!! that cookie made me hungry. oh yes; you should do ANOTHER as there is still more to cover like it's proximity to "CITY LIGHTS BOOKSTORE" & that tunnel-wall with the incredible stairway. it's been decades so i've forgotten the place names of things... zuòde hǎo!! 做得好!!!🙏🏼

SF chinatown seems MUCH larger & spread out whereas NY has a more cramped feel. the NY streets are a bit dirtier too. there are way more OPTICIANS in NY these days curiously enough. NY also has a square where local residents go to play mah jong, do tai chi, sun themselves with their friends & eat. it's a bit bigger than st. mary's square i think. NY chinatown is very close to ONE POLICE PLAZA which is the main headquarters of the NYPD & right across CANAL st. (1 of 2 MAIN thoroughfares the other being BOWERY) is LITTLE ITALY which kind of mirrors SF. NY is usually a bit busier (or may just seem that way because it's more compact). as "AK" states "They’re similar and different at the same time."

@@babagalacticus The park that most Chinese go to in Chinatown is Portsmouth Square, a much bigger place than St. Mary's Square. As in New York's Chinatown park, locals, especially old "aunties" and "uncles" go there to do tai chi exercises, play card games and Chinese chess, get a bit of sun, and gossip. San Francisco Chinatown, like New York's Chinatown, is conveniently located next to Little Italy aka North Beach. You can easily get to eat pizza and dim sum at the same time! Well done, ActionKid! I miss your New York tours.

Fairly good video by someone who isn't from here. It is Grant AVE, Stockton STREET. We only have one hospital. Golden Gate Bakery has been closed since covid. Why risk it when they didn't need to financially stay open. They own the building but lots of fans, especially people outside miss and want to try their egg tarts. Please come back. Maybe film eating at one of the restaurants or buying some pastries. Portsmouth is much more popular than St Mary's. It's easier on the ears to drop the h when saying toishan. We say toisan in Cantonese. In toisan dialect, it sounds more guttural, hoiszaan?
